This is a well written book for learning Access the program, but short on the Visual Basic Editor. Then again, this book describes in detail the use of Access, not to get in depth with Visual Basic for Applications, VBA. There are plenty of books to gain knowledge of using VBA, Windows API's, dynamic libraries, etc. Its a good reference if you know Access, and not difficult to read if your a beginner.I do like the tactile experience of thumbing through these books as reference, but find over time they become outdated and consume space. I have the kindle edition which provides portability. Worth the purchase.
- It's in serious need of editing - at least one chapter is a rehash of material previously covered. In some parts it looks like they wrote two drafts of the same material and forgot to remove one of them.+ Very thorough. They seem to have put a lot of thought into potential issues that new users might run into. You will not be left wondering much.~ This is a reference, not a course. Much of the info cross-references other chapters. This means that you will likely need to jump around if you want to get functional. Since I'm a completist I prefer not to jump around, so I'll likely need to read the whole thing through to be of any use. Different strokes.- There is a LOT of filler. They go through every menu, button and option ad nauseam. If you need to be told what the "Cancel" button does again and again, maybe there's no hope for you. Processes are broken down again and again for each of the different options. I guess it's better than leaving stuff out, but it feels like a cheap way to get more pages in.
Suitable for intermediate to advanced users, like me. I appreciate that the authors present the materials and procedures without resorting to the time-killing and mind-numbing step-by-tedious-step presentations found in so many books. I bought both the paperback and ebook (Kindle) versions. I highly recommend the ebook version. My biggest complaint - Where are the web-based.accdb examples? The website referenced in the book redirects the reader to the Wiley publishing site. That site gives no hint about how to get to the database examples, no relevant contact info, nor instructions about creating an account. I feel cheated.
Well written and to the point. Not a bunch of nonsensical fluff just to make a large book. I am an "old" programmer starting back in the dark ages with mainframe assembler and cobol. I also have a lot of experience with PCs and have used Access since it first came out. This book is similar to the books way back that got to the point and didn't waste your time.
I'm getting back into Access after having used it years ago, and there are pros and cons with this book. The pros: it's great for introductory and reference material. If you know nothing about Access, this is a good book to learn it from the ground up. The cons: it's pretty redundant. The book is over 1,100 pages and I'm one-third of the way through so far, but I can say this book could be probably 2/3 the size it is without the redundancy. It covers a topic, then covers it again a few pages later, then again more pages after that. Granted, covering a new topic is good for beginners, but scattering the same topic coverage many times through the book makes it a little frustrating to keep coming back to something once you've covered it. If you can skim through the parts you're familiar with though (and be confident you haven't missed something because of a feature that should have been covered when a topic was first discussed), then you'll get a good grounding and should be able to use this book for reference later.
So far, this is a good overview of relational databases and how to use Access for creating those. The rules are outlined clearly and the author gives good examples. There are a few items that require a bit more thought, however, regarding statements like, "by combining first and last names with birth dates, you may be able to come up with a unique combination of values to serve as the primary key". For a small enough database, sure, you might. However, for a large enough data set (think registered voters for a county or state, etc.), you will run into issues. Also, SSN's are not always unique (think Native Americans issued an SSN for everyone on a reservation).Overall, this is a good book and I've read the Wiley "Bible's" before. They give a good foundation for understanding the programs.
Great resource! Always wanted to know how to use Access. I had general basic knowledge of it from college but nothing compared to what I can do now thanks to this book. I was able to learn how to make a user interface for a database that without it I probably wouldn't have figured it out. Total time with this book I spent was 12 hours and made significant progress.
Great book that covers a pretty good depth and at a range of skill levels. Basic database stuff is covered lightly including some normal form and why use a database at all, but so is some macro and VBA stuff. Clear examples and useful example files are also made good use of. I think this could be useful for all but the most experienced users. Good resource for your permanent bookshelf as well.
