Beyond the Great Wall, by Jeffrey Alford

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Alford and Duguid, authors of the acclaimed Mangoes & Curry Leaves, explore the food and peoples of the outlaying regions of present-day China, historically home to those not ethnically Chinese. Part travel guide and part cookbook, this collection looks at the cultural survival and preservation of food in smaller societies including that of the Tibetan, Mongol, Tuvan and Kirghiz peoples, among others. The authors include vivid color photographs of food, people and places of cultural significance. Recipes are tantalizing and mostly simple, and ingredients are surprisingly easy to find. The book is sectioned by food type rather than ethnicity, covering everything from condiments and seasonings to fish and meats to drinks and sweets. Dishes have the hint of the familiar, such as Oasis Chicken Kebabs, Tibetan Pork and Spinach Stir-Fry, and Market Stall Fresh Tomato Salsa, while others are less common but equally tempting, including Kazakh Pulao, Steamed Tibetan Momos, and Home-style Tajik Nan. Peppered throughout are the authors' personal stories, which provide insight into each culture. A handsome and engaging collection suitable for travelers and cooks alike, this book will delight anyone with an interest in this part of the world. From the Inside Flap

In the West, when we think about food in China, what usually comes to mind are the signature dishes of Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai. But beyond these urbanized eastern areas lies the other China: the high open spaces and sacred places of Tibet, the Silk Road oases of Xinjiang and Qinghai, the steppelands of Inner Mongolia, and the steeply terraced hills of Yunnan and Guizhou. The people who live in these regions—Tibetans, Mongols, Uighurs, Iiao, Hui, Dong, Yi, Da, and others—are culturally distinct, with their own history and culinary traditions. In Beyond the Great Wall, Jeffrey Alford and Naomi Duguid—who met and fell in love as young travelers in Tibet—bring home the enticing flavors of these outlying areas of China. This eye-opening collection of magnificent photos, delectable home-style recipes, and inviting stories of people and places is a journey into a fascinating area of the world. China has gradually opened its more remote regions to foreign travel over the last twenty-five years. And in that period, Jeffrey and Naomi have traveled and eaten and photographed in mountain villages and border towns, in nomad yurts, in oases along the Silk Road, in local markets. They've tasted satisfying and delicious dishes at family meals and at small restaurants (that are in fact household kitchens putting out a menu). They've learned techniques from home cooks and market vendors: to shape noodles quickly and easily, to make warming family soups, easy stir-fries, succulent pulaos, and aromatic grilled kebabs.Food is so much a part of place, and this family-style food is extraordinarily good. Like the traditional regional cooking of rural France and Italy, it is comfort food, with direct flavors that speak to the heart and simple ingredients treated with respect. There are cumin-scented chicken kebabs; pea tendrils dressed with sesame oil and dark vinegar; lamb patties with chopped green herbs; slices of spice-rubbed roast pork; enticing salsas and condiments; and succulent noodles of many kinds, served in aromatic broth or dressed wth lively sauces. Some of this food comes from Central Asian culinary tradition, with its pulaos, flatbreads, and kebabs. Uighur nans and Tibetan momos remind us that the Indian Subcontinent is just across the Himalaya. Other dishes, especially those from the peoples of southern Yunnan and Guizhou, are close counsins of the Southeast Asian foods that Jeffrey and Naomi introduced us to in the influential Hot Sour Salty Sweet. These rich culinary cultures reflect not only layers of flavor, but also layers of history. Naomi and Jeffrey here document the traditions of the people living beyond the Great Wall at a time when these are threatened by the fast pace of change in modern China. And in Beyond the Great Wall the authors celebrate that other China, its diverse cultures, appealing food traditions, and vibrant daily life, with the passion and color it deserves—a must-have for every food lover, and an inspiration for home cooks and armchair travelers.

I first saw this book before traveling and living in China. The pictures are enthralling and beautiful, and I love the concept. Being a bit more familiar with the food after my travels around much of Sichuan (where I lived), Yunnan, Guangxi etc., I was hoping to get access and insight into some of my favorites. Unfortunately, many of these recipes are more educated guesses and slightly watered-down adaptations for less-intrepid travelers. And that's a fine intro, just not what I wanted. Also, perhaps since this book was researched, many of the "hard to find" ingredients for recipes that have admittedly been omitted, are now available or easily approximated with similar items, especially if you live near a Chinatown. There are also, with a bit of patience, some amazing bilingual bloggers all around Asia, so I'd probably track those down instead, if you know what you're looking for.

This is such a wonderful book, a joy to browse, and dip into a recipe or a travel story. The photography is breathtakingly beautiful, whether of people, landscapes, ingredients, oh, and yes, the food! More a work of anthropological cuisine than a mere cookbook, Beyond the Great Wall is a cultural and visual feast, a culinary travelogue that sweeps though the astounding variety of the outer, lesser-known areas of China.

This is a beautifully written book with amazing photography, it lives up to the standard that you would expect from Duguid and Alford. The recipes are authentic and the cultural commentary always educational and enjoyable to read.

My household likes to try different foods. Years ago, we were given "Hot Sour Salty Sweet" as a gift and have been enjoying recipes out of it ever since. My husband decided that he wanted a new cookbook and I saw that the authors had done this.... I read the reviews and decided to jump in; I am so glad that I did. We have been enjoying the food since the arrival of this new favorite cookbook. My six year old loves the Mongolian beef and has a great time with all of the dipping sauces. My husband and I are enjoying the mixture of flavors and spices. Fantastic book.

I lived "Beyond the Great Wall" for several years, and the cuisine there is phenomenal (and completely unlike what passes for "Chinese" food in the US). Was thrilled to get this book filled with my favorite recipes from western China. The photos and background info make this equal parts coffee table book and cookbook.

I have all of their books.......visually stunning, great recipes, as much a travel book as it is a cookbook !!.... and I'm a sucker for cookbooks anyway. Buy it !!

My son and daughter-in-law especially love Mongolia, and have traveled extensively in that country. They especially enjoy relationships with tribal people there and experiencing what ordinary people eat. So I ordered this as a Christmas gift for them and they absolutely loved it. I also scanned as much of the book as I had time for myself, and found the cultural stories relating to the recipes as fascinating as the descriptions of foods. It is truly a lovely book, either for 'foodies' or for amatuer cultural anthropologists.

An exceptional book on cultural foods of China with recipes, photographs, a look into cultural habits and customs. Well worth reading formany reasons... and the recipes work!

Edgar Allan Poe, by the time he wrote down the phrase “The fever called ‘Living’” – in his poem “For Annie” (1849) – was impoverished, in poor health, and desperately lonely, two years after the death of his beloved wife Virginia. The forty-year-old poet was also, though he could not have known it, in his last year of life; by the end of 1849, he would die, under mysterious circumstances and from unknown causes, in a Baltimore hospital. How fitting, then, that Paul Collins has taken the phrase "The Fever Called Living" and made it the subtitle of this brief Poe biography."Edgar Allan Poe: The Fever Called Living," with only 107 pages of text, is brief by design. Collins’s book is part of the "Icons" series of concise biographies published by New Harvest, an imprint of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Books published in the series so far include biographies of Jesus of Nazareth, Joseph Stalin, Lucian Freud, J.D. Salinger, Vincent Van Gogh, Alfred Hitchcock, Hannah Arendt, Paul of Tarsus, David Lynch, Benazir Bhutto, and of course Edgar Allan Poe – truly an eclectic list of icons. It is fortunate – and striking, considering the book’s status as part of a series called “Icons” – that Collins, a professor of English at Portland State University, takes the reader’s focus away from Poe as icon, and invites the reader to concentrate on Poe as a hard-working writer. This theme is emphasized right from the book’s beginning; Collins opens with the familiar though now-lapsed tradition of the “Poe Toaster’s” annual late-night visits to Poe’s Baltimore grave on the anniversary of Poe’s birth. But then Collins encourages us to ignore the colorful manifestations of EAP fan culture embodied by the Poe Toaster, “and instead watch the Baltimore Sun reporter taking notes from the perimeter. There, and not amid the weathered tombstones, is the reality of the living and working writer. Poe’s reputation was not earned through tragedy, but in spite of it: he was a careful craftsman of words, and a man whose deep dedication to understanding art is often obscured by the drama around his life” (p. 1).I like that focus and emphasis. Widespread awareness of the difficult circumstances of Poe’s life has no doubt done much to give Poe his, well, iconic status as an embodiment of the Romantic artist whose bleeding heart beats on through one tragedy after another. But Poe was a writer first and foremost, and one who produced some of the greatest American literature, in a variety of genres, under the most difficult circumstances imaginable. That part of Poe’s story is inspiring.Considering the brevity of "Edgar Allan Poe: The Fever Called Living," it is doubly impressive that Collins provides persuasive explanations for a number of the mysteries surrounding Poe’s life. When, for example, Collins considers biographers’ puzzlement at the odd scenario of Poe’s foster father John Allan sending the young Poe to the University of Virginia without sufficient funds to study there, Collins suggests that “It is hardly a mystery to any first-generation student. John Allan was an immigrant who never attended college; what he understood was business, secondary schools, and the occasional tutor fee….Of the time and money necessary for college, and its cultivation of sheer intellectual curiosity, he was ignorant” (p. 13).It is a sensible explanation; and that freshness of perspective marks many parts of this biography, as when Collins, looking at Poe’s time as an enlisted man in the United States Army, suggests that “the U.S. Army has the distinction of being the only institution to steadily support and appreciate the talents of Edgar Allan Poe while he was still alive” (p. 20).Collins takes particular care in tracing the development of Poe’s literary art. Poe’s early prose, Collins suggests, while following the sensationalist literary norms of his time, “still lacked a compelling narrator. In particular, a charismatic, manic first-person presence was needed to bring alive Poe’s use of dread and terrified sensation”, because, “though Poe could mock the form [of sensationalism], he hadn’t learned how to transcend it” (p. 25). In contrast, by the time of Poe’s failed verse drama "Politian" (1835), the young writer was learning from his prior mistakes: “With his genius at haunting narrators and an emerging commitment to plot structure, Poe now was growing closer to a mastery of his art” (p. 31).As mentioned above, Collins concentrates well on the practicalities of Poe’s life as a working author. Knowing the vagaries of a writing life – the book is dedicated to Dave Eggers, “who gave me my first break as a writer” – Collins looks at how Poe’s life choices affected his career. When it comes to Poe’s penchant for writing often savage reviews of the work of fellow authors, for instance, Collins writes that “The careers of the author and the reviewer mix with deceptive and dangerous ease. Reviews are quick but paltry money, distracting from the work that makes a writer’s reputation; they are transient in their effect on readers, but lasting in their damage to a writer’s professional relations” (p. 34). Similarly, aspiring writers who think they will make their first mark in short stories before going on to write The Great American Novel might benefit from Collins’s somber advice, in the context of publishers’ repeated rejections of Poe’s proposals of a volume of his short stories, that “authors receive precisely the same rejections from publishers even today. Short fiction sells poorly and is an extravagance barely tolerated even in established writers” (p. 35). So get back to work on that novel, alright? As any Poe biographer should do, Collins recognizes Poe’s singular achievements. Aptly, Collins describes Poe’s 1841 short story “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” the world’s first true mystery story in the modern sense, as “initiating the world’s most popular genre of fiction”, and therefore as “literally the most influential short story of the nineteenth century” (p. 49). And his later tale of ratiocination “The Purloined Letter” (1844), featuring as it did the same detective character of C. Auguste Dupin, arguably went even further in placing “deductive analysis and problem solving at the center” of the mystery story; “The Purloined Letter” illustrates how the appeal of the mystery genre lies not in bloodshed or violence, but rather in “the bringing of order to disorder, and causality to the seemingly inexplicable” (pp. 59-60)."Edgar Allan Poe: The Fever Called Living" is, as mentioned above, brief; indeed, I would hazard a surmise that authors writing for the Icons series are told very strictly what the word limit for books in this series is. But Collins tells Poe’s sad and compelling story in a concise and effective manner. Edgar Allan Poe may have conquered “the fever called ‘Living’” in 1849, but the literature he wrote has transcended the passage of time.

Curiously, a few days after I started reading this book, I took one of those crazy pointless tests that claimed to determine which writer from history I'd have liked the best. I laughed when it came up "Poe" because I have so many memories of reading his books at different times in my life. He himself would have enjoyed the story of how my dad caught me reading "The Tell Tale Heart" by flashlight under the covers at about ag3 10. My dad took the book away and ordered my mother to take it back to the public library. It was right when the investigators come to check out the details. I was FRENZIED to find out what happens...but didn't read the balance for more than a year (because I couldn't get my hands on the book!) I am LOVING Paul Collins' descriptive narrative of Poe's life and the colorful way he handles the details. He's a good writer, and he has a worthy subject.

Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most intriguing writers in American literature. His short life (he died at 40) was productive and inventive. He’s often credited with the invention of the detective story (i.e. “Murders in the Rue Morgue”), and was prolific as a writer of stories, poetry, and criticism. We know him for macabre tales like “Tell-Tale Heart” and the poem, “The Raven.” Few authors invoke such a benighted image.Yet the popular image of Poe is a bit of a dark caricature, reflecting truths but exaggerating features for effect. Part of this exaggeration probably owes to our collective desire to romanticize the tortured artist – and Poe is as tortured as they come. However, some of the exaggeration of Poe’s faults owe to the fact that he was a harsh critic, and at least one of the authors who felt the sting of his pen found an opportunity to amplify the “drug-addled lunatic” aspect of Poe’s nature in a biography after the great author’s death. That’s not to deny that Poe had an addictive personality. He was both an alcoholic and prone to gambling away whatever funds graced his pockets. This short biography (less than 150pp.) gives one insight into Poe’s life from birth to death in five chapters. The first of these chapters describes Poe’s childhood, which was marred by the death of his mother, abandonment by his father, and being taken in -- but not adopted -- by a foster couple. Granted the foster couple was wealthy, but Poe’s foster-father could be a harsh man and the uncertainty of not being formally adopted seemed to have weighed on Poe’s mind. The middle chapters give special attention to Poe’s life as a writer, noting under what circumstances he was published, starting with a self-published chap book and moving through to becoming one of America’s great men of letters (though he never made enough money to live in comfort.) Poe famously married a cousin who was very young (though of legal age) at the time, and we get some insight into that relationship, which ended not terribly long before his own death. The last chapter gives the details of Poe’s demise.I found this book interesting and educational. Collins neither gets lost in the minutiae nor give’s Poe’s life short shrift, and it feels as though he reveals the true Poe and not the T-shirt version. I would recommend this book for fans of Poe’s work and for those who are interested in the literary history of America.

This is relatively short book that delivers a great deal of information about the life of Edgar Allan Poe. While other biographies go on and on, providing reams of plodding minutia, this presentation gave me all I really cared to know about Poe while informing me about many things I didn’t know about Poe before. And it did that in a manner that kept my attention. Where did his middle name, Allan, come from? What was his marriage to his 13 year old cousin all about? I had vague ideas about his time at West Point, and his having lived in Richmond and Baltimore and New York City. In fact, years ago I happened across his grave in Baltimore, but didn’t understand then what I was really seeing. Poe’s life of incredible creativity and unappreciated genius is an interesting and fascinating story told by Collins in an enjoyable, informative and interesting way.

I listened to this book on Overdrive audio and really enjoyed the insight of this author's opinions. I agreed with 99% of what he discussed. Every American and immigrant should either read this book or listen to it because it speaks the truth in my opinion. Worth every second listening to it. The book does repeat itself during the first couple of chapters, but it does that to make a connection before you get into the late chapters that deal specifically with certain aspects of opinion. This book outlines why America is great and how we are imploding on ourselves. He basis he opinions on his comparison of not only India, but of many countries. He discusses slavery and the current bid by Jesse Jackson to sue the American Government for reparations and of which he calls "bulls***" on. A well researched, well thought out, developed story of one immigrants journey to become assimilated into America. Those that come to America expecting free merchandise, instant wealth and this nation to bow at their previous countries culture need to wake up. America is imploding and Mr. D'Souza explains why. He uses history as a means to explain why the way America is and without America most of the rest of the world would still be living in the dark ages.

Great book. Must read. No one is perfect and since countries or governments are products of men then obviously no country or government is perfect. So we have all made mistakes and so has every country on earth since the beginning of time. But this book puts in perspective the bad, but more importantly, the good that the USA has done and shows why we are an exceptional nation and deserving of patriotism and pride.Well done and great and important read for all Americans and those striving to be Americans.

After reading Letters to a Young Conservative, this book has many of the same themes. However, reading these same themes does not tire the reader as it is important to understand the principles of freedom and justice and why they make America great. Does America have its problems? Yes, but that would miss the point. Every country has its problems, but America has transformed the face of this world with a form of government that balances freedom with an individual's quest for virtue.

Great book written by an immigrant who really appreciates what America has done for him. He looks at the history of how America became the country it has been in the past. He gives a clarion call on what needs to be done to keep America great.

I read this book shortly after it was published and it has circulated to many friends of varying educational and political sophistication, gathering consistantly rave reviews from them. So I thought that this is a book that needn't be reviewed here, but on reading the reviews, I was somewhat surprised by what was said. I am a retired lawyer who has been a passionate amateur historian for my entire adult life. I understand America's history pretty well, and that of Western Civilization, and as a result of pre- September 11 tensions in the Middle east, had become fairly well informed about its history, too, which interest intensified as a result of 9/11. As my sons and their friends made their way through school, I was both surprised and troubled by how little history was taught, and how distorted it was, when it was taught. I was equally troubled by the strangely negative attitude of academicians, especially at the college level, to the values America ostensibly represents, and found the concept of multiculturalism to be highly amusing, until I realized that the academic community, in large part, believes in it! Dinesh D'Souza is the kind of person with whom I could enjoy engaging in conversation over dinner about this stuff(and, yes, it's an invitation), because he is informed and articulate. While I don't agree in toto with his position, it is, in the main, supported by history . His analysis of why Western Civilization is superior to others (secularization of government, capitalism and pursuit of science) is correct. Some, because of a political or academic point of view, may disagree, but the fact is that no other civilizations have produced "value" like the West. And by value, I don't refer only to industrially manufactured goods or scientific invention (but ask anyone to identify a major advance in science that originated in the Middle East, or a major medical school in Africa). "Value" icludes cultural genius like Mozart, Goethe, or Da Vinci; it includes great thinkers, writers, statesmen and military leaders. This fascinating book examines all of these points and more. D'Souza is an excellent writer, as well as a very insightful person. Do not be deceived by the naysayers on this book. Get it, read it, and spend some quiet time reflecting on what you have read. It will make you feel good about this great land of ours. And whoever said that patriotism was a bad word? Not around here, anyway.

What a fabulous book. Written by an immigrant and naturalized American this book offers a uniqe perspective on what makes America so great. And he hits so many things right on the head that many natural born citizens don't seem to comprehend.Dinesh (the author) touches on so many issues and perspectives but you must read them to get the jist of what he is talking about. He hits the nail on the head so often. When talking about the perspective of the Arabs on the United States as to what we think of them, "camel jockeys" ect. He is right in many ways. When he talks of how we should respond to the 9-11 attacks he speaks from a middle-eastern perspective (he is from India). He talks of slavery and the African-American perspective and also speaks of the confrontations he has had with Jesse Jackson and their conflicting perspectives. That of a new immigrant as opposed to a supposedly down-trodden minority. This is a very important and informative book. Although many may not like it or consider in controversial or even too patriotic in its view I feel that it should be read by every American and immigrant. If only more Americans would have the overall view of this immigrant and naturalized American perhaps we would understand ourselves better. A GREAT BOOK! Buy it, read it and think on it. More folks like Dinesh D'Souza in the United States would make it a better country. He is intelligent, insightfull and patriotic!

Really old. Gravedigger is the only relevant monater truck in the book.

This book is great for my 4 yr old who is heavily into Monster Trucks. The pictures inside are nice and the book is perfect with it being hardcover (hard to crease and mess up). I recommend if looking for book for your boys collection!!

This book is the best book I have ever seen on monster trucks. The pictures are amazing, the other content is really good as well, and the book is just over all great. My son LOVES this book.

My son loves this, great pictures, informative. Got this for his 4th birthday. All of his cousins were enjoying it too.

I purchased this for my son, he is four and is in love with monster trucks! He loved all the amazing pictures and facts that this book was full of.

The 4 year old loves everything Monster truck and this is a great book with great pictures. I got it for a super low price also.

I have been reading this book with my son, age 4, for a week. The book is not too long and it has really great photos in it. There are plenty of small snippets of information for reading so you can read a little on each page out loud without having to read it all. We checked it out from the library and I can't believe it is here in hardcover for five bucks. Truly worth the money.

This "beginner's" approach to Presbyterianism disappointed me in its lack of better organization and its description of certain aspects of the faith. At some points an answer would seem to contradict another answer, elsewhere in the book. I think, also, that the author assumes the reader already has some knowledge about Christianity in general and about Presbyterianism in particular. This makes for leaps and gaps in the discussion of various ideas. I believe any introductory book to a Christian religion is well served by the inclusion of the basics of Christian belief before elaborating on the Presbyterian take (or perhaps during that basic discussion). (An example of what I think of as a good model for an introductory book is "Lutheranism 101", also sold by Amazon. Among other things, that book cites the Bible for various beliefs and rituals , e.g., baptism, communion, in a brief, orderly way; offers suggested daily prayers; and keeps one focused on how to develop a relationship with God through Lutheran practices and beliefs.) I shall have to keep looking for a more foundational introduction to Presbyterianism.

I thought this book was informative, but no one obviously proof read it. Letters are missing, some are added that don't make sense and statements are made that are not complete. It makes it very difficult to read. I finally gave up reading it, which is sad because I really wanted to read about the topic.Until it is fixed, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Frankly, I'd like to get my money back!

When I joined my Presbyterian church one of the pastors asked if I joined because I was Presbyterian or if I joined because I liked the congregation. It was the second. We are doing a book study on this and many questions have been answered. I can now say that while I still love my congregation, I love the Presbyterian church and am honored to call myself a member.

This is a wonderful book which provides concise and accurate information on commonly asked questions concerning Presbyterian theology and belief statements. Be aware this book mainly reflects the ideas of PC(USA) however the author does try and mention other Presbyterian groups stances as well. This is great for a new members class, group study, or just for those curious to learn more about Presbyterianism.

The title I gave this review says it all. I found this book very pleasurable to read. The question / answer format of this book provides the reader brief but concise information about the Presbyterian Church (USA) beliefs and practices. I would recommend this book to any inquirer or a lifetime PCUSA member who would like a refresher course in their faith.

My son was required to read this book for confirmation class. I read it as well and found it very informative

I have enjoyed skimming through this when I have a chance. My family and I have recently switched from attending our local Catholic Church to our local Presbyterian church and the book has been great for getting some ideas on how the churches differ and how they are set up. I have even started taking it along to our adult Sunday school that we attend while the kids are in class....

I am enjoying this book but there are so many typos I'm about to squeak very loudly. Please re-edit this book and update our previously purchased copies. Thank you! :)

I like this for the easy step by step directions and the wide variety of these aircrafts to select from. So, I would like to recommend this for five stars and for children and adults who wish to learn how to draw these types of airplanes, aircrafts and spacecrafts. I received this ebook for the cost of this ebook I had bought as a tool for being an author and illustrator, so now that I have looked it over from front to back Ai am now sending you this review in return for being able to buy this for my library at a great price, here is my honest review. super job Lee! Just like to make one suggestion: I would have been more super if you could have put each of these lessons in ABC type of order and let the author then go to this table of contents and tap on their particular lesson right then and there instead of having to spend a lot more time searching for it when they most need to begin drawing, see? Thank you for hearing a buyer out Lee J.! By Angela

I used this both as an art teacher and as a reading teacher. Boys love to draw these things. In art, they need to really see and notice detail, and they have to persevere until they get it right. In reading, they have to do the art skills, and follow directions. Since it's non-fiction, it fits in with today's education trends. Kids love to draw whether they're in art class or reading class, and how special is it to be able to use this as a reading teacher? Your male students will love you.

I'm a ten year old. I love drawing airplanes. This book taught me how to draw many different kinds of planes including the B52 bomber (USA) and the B17 flying fortress. Also in the book you can draw other things that fly too. For example, in the book you could draw the Saturn 5 rocket and draw the command module in it. In my opinion this is a great book to get for a young artist.

Good books to learn to draw step by step. It makes drawing simple and fun.

I suck at drawing; don't even plan to use this book as a guide to improve technique. Bought it for purely nostalgic reasons, memories from my childhood hanging out in the library, not doing homework. heh

Great gift for someone who's becoming interested in aviation.

Perfect for those learning to draw.

Pretty detailed pictures and you have to have the motivation to complete each drawing.

I found this to be so very positive, and can truly see myself changing my thought process. But for me my mouth does get me into trouble with others as I am a realist and speak my mind good, bad or indifferent, but I stand up for others which causes problems with others (who are suppose to be Catholics, and speak negatively about others, so my mouth has gotten me into trouble). After reading this book, I can change myself to be more positive about myself, while continuing to help others.

This book was a great little read with Scripture and life examples. I learned that words are powerful and they are like seeds. Our words produce fruit and that fruit can be negative or positive. You will also learn how to override your negative thoughts through speaking positive words in spite of the negative thoughts. Our words produce fruit so what fruit is your tongue producing?

This short book packs a powerful message that can really change your life. He talks about the power of our words and how they effectively help or hinder our progress to our chosen goal. If you continually talk in the negative it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. I recommend reading this book.

This little book is loaded with biblical and practical wisdom on the power of our words. But before I continue my review, I want to pause and say thank you Reverend J. Martin for writing this book. For the past year, l have been on a journey discovering how negative thoughts and words affect the function of the brain which then effects the body. Your book has encouraged and inspired me to continue being mindful of what I say to and about myself as well as others. Wow! Positive or negative words spoken on a regular basis has the power to change the trajectory of one's life. If everyone understood how important it is to speak words that bring life instead of death, marriages, relationship, our souls and bodies could begin to heal and give Glory to God!!

The book changed my entire way of thinking and talking. Excellent content. It focused on the message of the Bible of how important our words are to ourselves and those around us.The only problem was poor grammar in a few places.

A great book on using your words wisely as your words you have used in past leads up to where you are today. The words you use today will shape your future. One thing I GLEANED from this book was that instead of using your words to DESCRIBE a bad situation, instead use your words to CHANGE the situation. I would recommend to others.

An excellent book that clearly shows the path to success. It is not necessary to be super endowed with skills or attributes to succeed; the message of this small book is to verbalise your optimism and success will visit you. Talk positively and God will ensure that your words become a reality.

This has been the best purchase so far for me!!! I have been cursing my life, but no more! From this day forward I will speak from faith and not fear. I will speak abundance over my life and not lack!! Wonderful book...I will play it over and over each day!! Yes make sure you purchase the Audible reader with it...it's awesome!

When you buy a book that says 'Atlas', you expect it to be a book of maps. Well, it is - after a fashion. I was looking for detailed maps of each battle, with changes in troop placements shown as the battle progresses. This book is not at all what I had in mind. It's basically a very brief history of the Civil War, with a small map for most, but not all, battles. I already have shelves full of books about the Civil War; what I really wanted was a book of detailed, clearly readable maps. If you're an aficionado of the Civil War. forget it. It's probably okay for neophytes.

Got this from my library in a bigger version and would have liked that better but this is nice. I bought another Civil War atlas but this one has more maps. I was really interested in the map for Sterling Price's raids in Missouri and this atlas had that map and the information.

Very good reference book for use when reading Civil War history. It allows an understanding of the geographic scope of the battles and campaigns. The maps are clear and the accompanying text complements the maps to give a view of the tatical and strategic aspects of the major engagements.

I prefer the "Atlas" books in general. The maps and details are better than other books.

This is an inexpensive slim fairly small atlas (9 by 12 inches), but packs a wallop. Some of the criticisms are accurate, sometimes the maps are not easy to read, binding is such that at the centerfold things are cramped. I don't know about the inaccuracies mentioned, but any volume covering as massive amount of material is this is likely to have a few. Actually I have never had a map that was totally accurate on anything. But I wanted an atlas that I could use while I was reading the occasional Civil War book. And I did not want another massive atlas (I have several of these, but not a Civil War one). I doubt that a better book for the purpose is likely to come along. I recommend it.

Excellent book for planning trips to various Civil War sites. Jim McPherson is just tops for Civil War history and knowledge of the sites.

Wonderful book, great pictures, very accurate.

I'm really glad I bought this book. There are a lot of books covering Civil War battlefields; most of those books cover the major battles at length. This book covers those plus most or all of the lesser battles (as far as I can tell). Many of these smaller battles had consequences that went beyond just the battle itself; Ball's Bluff, for instance. Federal dead floated down the Potomac into Washington D.C. further confirming that this would be a long war.

Iraq: Then & Now provides a comprehensive look at the history, culture, and current events of Iraq. It is not as dry as a textbook although due to Iraq's status as a conflict zone, the book isn't quite as fun as an ordinary Fodor's or Lonely Planet guide. Except for a 14-page appendix, authors Dabrowska and Hann generally exclude information that would be useful to Western tourists because it is still mostly unsafe to travel there, except possibly to Kurdistan, as of its writing. The guide is fairly well-organized and easy to follow with good but small maps, a few nice photos, and a useful table of contents and index. The authors' discernible political bias against the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 does not ruin the book--Iraq: Then & Now is still useful and informative. The book also includes delightful little sidebars such as this one on Iraq's fauna about the post-invasion reemergence of honey badgers in Basra and the marshlands of the South: "The rumour mill became active and the British were held responsible for releasing the creatures to frighten the locals. The honey badger weighs up to 13kg [29 lbs], is one of the world's most fearless creatures and preys on jackals, antelope, foxes, crocodiles and snakes." The British Army denied the accusation.

Very good book, both educational and entertaining. Should be helpful for planning a trip to Iraq. The only thing I didn't like were some parts tended to drag on for a while and were boring and full of unnecessary information and details, the parts describing graphic violence were the most entertaining, but more would have made this a better book, for me at least personally.

With over 32 months of time spent in Iraq in the last five years, I found this "travel guide" extremely interesting. My soldiers and I spend months trying to determine various aspects of the culture and attempting to minimize our impacts. We have partnered with cultural anthropologists and other experts to help us understand subtleties between Sunni and Shia, urban and rural, sheiks and clerics. Much of our information collection centers around Islamic holidays and practices in order to maintain stability and promote Iraqi rule of law. This book serves as a useful reference for a variety of cultural and historic matters within Iraq.I have purchased numerous copies of this book to provide to my leaders to help sensitize them to issues like preserving historic sites, understanding refugee issues, and internally displaced persons. In one instance a young company commander stopped digging at a local Iraqi patrol base after finding shards of pottery and other possible historic remnants. Although the local Iraqi Army leader told him not to worry about it, the company commander reported the incident. After bringing scientists from Hilla, the team declared that the artifacts could potentially date back to Alexander the Great. The US Forces stopped digging and roped off the area to prevent any possible damage from military operations.I found this publication a timely addition to my bookshelf and have opened it frequently to inform my soldiers about various cities and provinces in Iraq. Geoff Hann just led the first authorized western tour of Iraq since the start of the war, with the exception of his forays into Kurdistan in 2007. The ministry of tourism continues to grow capacity in order to maintain and improve cultural heritage sites, while welcoming travelers into the country. Of course, Iranian and other Shia pilgrims have been travelling to and within Iraq since 2003. They mainly visit the Shia religious sites of Najaf, Karbala, and Khadamiyah in Baghdad. However, Iraq seems to be stable enough in some areas (mainly Kurdistan in the north) to begin opening its borders to non-Muslims in order to share its rich heritage with the rest of the world. Although Iraq remains a country with dangerous elements, its security forces gain momentum each passing month. With the reduction of British and US Forces, we could see the tourist industry expand for westerners. For the time being, however, I would not take my family to most areas of Iraq. Too many extremists in the militias and former insurgents have the possibility of taking advantage of kidnapping opportunities presented by western tourists.
