Review

The General Theory is nothing less than an epic journey out of intellectual darkness. That, as much as its continuing relevance to economic policy, is what makes it a book for the ages. Read it, and marvel.' (Paul Krugman)

This edition is very obviously printed on demand by a paperback mill and is actually harder to read because of it! It's filled with grammatical errors and inexplicable changes in font and size. Words are smooshed together and the charts are all pixelated and artifacted. It looks like a meme that your aunt would post on your facebook wall basically. Check out the bizarre acknowledgment at the beginning! Also no publisher is listed anywhere in the book and the printing date is the date I ordered it, haha

In spite of Keynes' caveat in the preface ("This book is chiefly addressed to my fellow economists. I hope that it will be intelligible to others.") I owed it to myself to give it a read. _The General Theory_ is dense reading. Fortunately, Keynes is clear in his exposition, his positions well articulated. As a non-economist, I was struck by several things. First was Keynes' demolition of "classical" economic theory on the means of increasing employment, political economy, and the relationship of supply to demand. (Think Say, Malthus, and especially Ricardo and Pigou.) This was totally unexpected, but given the revolutionary nature of his argument, entirely understandable. Second, I was stuck by the way in which Keynes structures his theory - it was much more reminiscent of philosophy than economics, as the terms Keynes uses are first clearly defined and deliniated before the relationship between ideas (and his postulates on the cause and effect between them) is discussed. Lastly, I was pleasantly suprised by the wit and cleverness of his writing. That said, I found it difficult reading, primarily because I am not fluent with many of the concepts Keynes discusses (the "elaasticity of effective demand" as it relates to the Quantity Theory of Money for example). WIth patience, plenty of revisiting the definitions of economic terms and careful deliberate thought, I was able to follow the gist of Keynes' General Theory. It made for slow going. Whether you agree (or not) with Keynes' theories have become as much a political exercise as an economic one, and are waters I'd rather not wade into here. In terms of the merits of the book, for the lay reader, you really have to want it to wade through it - it may be suprising at how poorly represented Keynes' ideas are represented in the popular imagination (for example, that Keynes supported deficit finance). That alone an incentive for giving _The General Theory_ a try.

This is a foundational book for anyone interested in the development of economics, particularly macroeconomics. This book, and Keynes more generally, was hugely influential on many of the policy decisions in the US and Britain during the first half the 20th century, and it (and he) continues to be influential today in a variety of forms. So-- good stuff, despite some of its more difficult sections. This edition is bunk, though. I think it's one of those quick-print versions where a publishing company takes a text available through public domain and prints you a copy when you order it. That's probably fine in itself, but this one is missing all of the footnotes, where (I hear!) Keynes conducts a lot of his argument with his contemporary economists. Page 81 even references them: "My running comments on the above [topic] have been made in the footnotes." But no footnotes! This particular edition is also large (~7.5"x10") with fairly small print, making a less than ideal physical reading experience. It's skinny, too, squeezing more than 400 pages worth of material into 167 pages. I don't know about you, but I really like being able to turn the pages more often than I can here. Turning makes me feel like I'm making progress. There is ample room in the margins and other white space for your own notes, though, which is a plus.

I learned more about economics in this one book than in all my other economics reading before, including two courses in college. I didn't understand it all, I didn't want to understand all that about the rate of interest, but I was shocked at Keyne's focus on employment, the propensity to consume, the multiplier, and so much more. I thrilled to see the arch of his argument, that the classical theory deals only with the special case of full employment, even assumes it. Actually, I read this twice, the first as part of The Essential Keynes, ed. Skidelsky. The excerpts were so good I wanted to read the whole thing. There's so much more to read. Next, Minsky.

The text was incredibly small with a 2 inch margin on the top of pages. The formatting on equations was unintelligible. This looks like an illegal reprinting of this book.

The paper back Stellar Editions is a large format, very small print, and has no footnotes. The "Look inside" is deceiving, I don't know why they use that illustration.Disappointing!

I don't care for Keynes' theory, but you have to read it if you want to understand government policy

Definitely well written, even for economic standards. Would recommend reading this to all citizens who wish to change their perceptions upon the great misunderstandings we are so prone to in economics. A must for students of economics and a prerequisite for entering politics.

Description tells you that it's teeny/tiny, but it didn't register. Made for leprechauns.

2012 IPPY Bronze Award in the Cookbook category (Independent Publisher Book Awards)ForeWord Reviews 2012 Book of the Year Award Finalist (TBA)2013 James Beard Foundation Book Awards, Nominee Finalist"Griffiths may be an ideologue, but his recipes adapt well to the work of the unarmed home cook hoping simply to feed friends beautiful, flavorful food in the chill of early winter. His anise brine mutes the wildness in feral boar. But it also augments the flavor of commercially raised pigs, increases the clarity of their flavor, acts as the best sort of kitchen cheat." — Sam Sifton, "How to Tame a Wild Pork Chop" featured in The New York Times Magazine "I don't really see myself plucking doves anytime soon—rather I tend to feed them—but I greatly admire Jesse Griffiths and his work, especially Afield. It's solid and real, not something stylish and trendy. It's clear that Jesse takes this work very seriously. That would be enough, but I have to add that the photographs are especially evocative." —Deborah Madison, author of Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone and Local Flavors "After the Larousse Gastronomique, this book will become my new bible. Afield is part of the new generation of culinary books. Actually, it's more than just a culinary book, it's a North American chef d'oeuvre. Enjoy!" —Martin Picard aka "The Wild Chef," author of Au Pied de Cochon Sugar Shack "A kindred spirit and fellow hunter, angler and cook, Jesse Griffiths has created a book that not only highlights the glories of Texas' abundant game and fish, but is also just as relevant and as useful wherever you can find doves and deer, crabs and crappies. It is one of a very few modern cookbooks that does justice to America's wild game and fish." —Hank Shaw, author of Hunt, Gather, Cook "Jesse Griffiths practices what most of us only preach when it comes to sustainable eating. Afield shows us that hunting is as much about compassion, respect and knowledge of animals, and the land as it is about the preparation. Much praise goes to Jesse for making the art of hunting and cooking game approachable." —Carla Hall, co-host of The Chew "From his love of hunting and fishing, Jesse Griffiths has created a rare and beautiful book." —April Bloomfield, chef and author of A Girl and Her Pig Advance Praise "Of all the members of The Butcher's Guild, Jesse is one of the most intrepid and iconoclastic. Gracefully teaching sustainability and holistic cooking in Texas, he has become the young grandaddy to a new generation of chefs and butchers. His prose and approach are as warm as a campfire on a Texas dove-hunt." —Marissa Guggiana, author of Primal Cuts and Off the Menu; co-founder of The Butcher's Guild "The recipes are spot-on (I cook; my son is a chef), the photography is gorgeous, and the philosophy is a welcome breath of non-self-righteous rationalization." —James R. Babb, Editor, Gray's Sporting Journal "This book is inspiring. Jesse captures the energy of the hunter gatherer in a refined and approachable way. This book makes me want to eat Snipe and smoke my own catfish." —Jamie Bissonnette, chef and butcher at Coppa and Toro in Boston "Jesse Griffiths knows what's important about food...that it's fresh, local and allowed to speak for itself. He's an old school chef with deep respect for the land, his farmers and purveyors and the food they produce and it shows through his cooking." —Dave Pasternack aka "The Fish Whisperer," according to the New York Times; author of A Young Man and the Sea "For all who want to take increased responsibility for meat eating and plan to hunt it themselves, Afield is the book to follow. For all who may aspire to hunting, it is the book to read closely for a real sense of the experience. For those who already know the pleasures of the hunt, but may not know how to maximize the pleasures of the table, Afield is the book to cook from." —Deborah Krasner, author of GOOD MEAT "The magic, and why I think Afield is a special work, is that it fully portrays a way of living and thinking that allows us to return to a more simple way to be measured and respected. And it does so without lecturing or pandering. It reminds me that by living a more principled life, I can make my world a better place and I can use food and cooking to do it. This book is a beautiful piece of work, and after you read it, and cook from it, please get outside and get dirty with it. Wherever you are, the great outdoors is waiting for you, afield." —Andrew Zimmern, host of Bizarre Foods, from his introduction to Afield (Andrew featured Griffiths breaking down a feral hog on the Bizarre Foods Austin episode that aired on August 13, 2012) "It's not news that we're rethinking how we eat. Between money issues, and the conglomeration of differing ideas about where we should get our food and what we should do with it, I'm surprised we've not seen a book like Afield before now. Then again we've not had a Jesse Griffiths stepping forward before now. With this book he reaches beyond those who have always hunted. He lives that idea of working with what is around you and hunting naturally comes out of that for him. Hunting is not for all of us, but this book has much to teach about working with meat, cooking game well, and for some us, it offers a gentle, thoughtful introduction to a way with food that seemed foreign in the past. It could be a marker for the future." —Lynne Rossetto Kasper, host of public radio's national food show, The Splendid Table®, from American Public Media (Griffiths' segment will air in mid-September) "If things get tough on Planet Earth, you'll want Jesse Griffiths at your side, or at least, his educational and entertaining book, Afield! Read Jesse Griffiths' Afield for inspiration, and then get out to the wilderness and bring home a wild hog, or at least a few fish! Then flip through the pages of this beautiful book to learn what to do with your catch. Jesse Griffiths is an omnivore's inspiration — one of Texas' greatest supporters of and educators on local foods of every kind — he's just as good with vegetables as he is with game. Afield is Jesse Griffiths and his cohorts at their finest. If you don't have a gun or a fishing pole, just delve into Afield for a great armchair experience!" —Carol Ann Sayle, organic vegetable farmer, Boggy Creek Farm, Austin, TX “Griffiths takes you inside the moment with him, into his head, as he searches for a downed doe or sets the hook in a catfish’s mouth. It’s impossible to miss Griffiths’ reverence for the lives he literally consumes.” —Kim Pierce, Dallas Morning News   “Everything you want to know about hyper-locavorism can be found in this book of stories, recipes and how-tos that will take you from couch potato to wild boar hunter in no time. Well...maybe a little time.” —Jesse Kapadia, Food Republic   “Lots of the recipes - for turkey, duck, fish, crab, and rabbit in particular - could be happily used by cooks with no intention of actually harvesting it themselves from anywhere but the butcher shop.” —Molly Watson, About.com   “Calling Afield a mere cookbook would be…like calling the Grand Canyon a large ditch. A philosophical journal, a field guide, a visual work of art – all of these would be fitting descriptions of the new book. Half of [the photographs] will inspire you to never eat anything processed again, while the other half will make you want to grab your rod or gun and head out into the wild right away.” —Bearings: A Southern Lifestyle for Men   “Afield is at once anecdotal and educational… In a country where gun ownership is more associated with NRA zealots than food sourcing, Griffiths wants to open up people’s minds to living off the land once again.” —Veronica Meewes, CultureMap Austin   “Afield will inspire you to do—to roll up your sleeves and catch a flounder, clean a rabbit, field dress a feral hog, butcher a deer, cook up a squirrel, and make your own sausage—all in the name of a good meal.” —Sarah Hebbel-Stone, FarmPlate   “Part recipe collection, part Hemingway-esque adventure read, [Afield] comes from one of Austin’s fiercest talents.” —Paula Disbrowe, Daily South   “Yes, it’s a cookbook, but more specifically, it’s an impeccably written, extensively photographed manual that takes people through the hunting process from land, lake, and sea and right back into the home kitchen.” —Layne Lynch, Texas Monthly"For a reader who knows the magic of a duck blind at sunrise, the writing is evocative; for the novice, it offers additional insight into why hunting and fishing are favored pastimes for millions in this country."—Kerry Luft, Chicago Tribune"Griffiths forges a new approach to the sustainable movement through a compelling narrative on the benefits, both mental and physical, to catching your own dinner."—Michele Harris, Erickson Tribune“A practitioner of the new hunting-cooking movement, Griffiths also happens to be a gifted writer who captures the drama and romance of moving through a creek slowly so as not to spook the fish or gutting and scaling whiting directly into Gulf waves while surf fishing… [It’s] Hemingway-esque.” —Greg Morago, Houston Chronicle   “[Afield] is one of the better game cookbooks in recent years, equally accessible to avid hunters and fishermen and those who are just starting out, as well as those who are debating whether to begin.” —Kerry Luft, Latino Times   “We have come a long way from our days as hunter-gatherers, yet there is still deep satisfaction in catching a fish and cooking it yourself…Jesse Griffiths has tapped into that primordial urge.” —Michael Hoinski, Texas Monthly

This is a must have for the new to game or seasoned chef. Well written, great pictorials, and all the recipes I have tried are fantastic. Very rustic and simple. It will be passed down.

This is probably the most beautiful and well written cook book I own. The author does a fantastic job of telling about earth meet, where to get it, how to butcher, and how to prepare. Each section is full of beautiful pictures and examples. I purchased this book as a gift and then had to order for myself.

only became aware of this book, eating at Dai Due's fabulous tent during Saturday mornings spent at the Austin Farmer's market. For weeks, I would wake up, quite hungry, but holding off on anything but coffee in order to fully appreciate Dai Due's offerings later in the morning... every week was different, but always out-of-this-world tasty -- maybe a wild boar, or stewed duck, or venison base, always assembled fresh in a hot bed of tortillas and slathered on top with a homemade veggie mix or slaw or gravy of some sort. Damn good, near perfect. I was not a "regular", but was hooked on going regularly. And then one day I saw this book out on the counter, propped open on an easel, pointing exactly to the page with a recipe for what I had just ordered. What's this!?! Thumbing through it and then talking with one of the people behind the counter, I was told this was a book that the proprietor (Jesse, not there at that exact moment) had written, and if not the outright specials that day, then whatever was being offered was following the spirit of the book. I was also told that somehow, it would be cheaper to buy the book at Amazon, than in person. Since I was low on cash that day anyways, I ordered when I got home. Came in about a week, I immediately dug into it con mucho gusto. It's a great read about how we should all eat and cook; I wish I had the time to hunt my own field game and prepare it like they do. I've tasted the results! Many years ago I read Omnivore's Dilemma and became self-aware about the problems we have with our structural food; Jesse's book could have been titled Omnivore's Answer.

Love these recipes so far. Jesse is the man

Great cookbook for the hunter!

Gave it to a friend as a gift... He has enjoyed the book from the butchering of the different game to the cooking of game...

Teal in a jar. Between the delicious meal and the rave reviews at the table, it didnt get any better. These are normal, great tasting recipes. Not weird game recipes.

I am not an overly talented cook but I feel most of these recipes were a little fancy. I was really disappointed that there weren't any recipes for elk, and this is the main reason I returned the book. The quality and pictures are very nice.

Update: I'm doing my second readthrough and I'm really appreciating this time. Will give a full reviews when I actually fully read it now that he's released 1.0It's not bad, but it's still over my head. It's possible functional programming is just a bit much for me at this point, but it would be nice for someone to really try and dumb it down. It would be nice if Alvin can start it off making it stupid simple scale it more nicely. Though truthfully, it is easier to understand than other books/reading material I have come across.

The author has done a great job in putting together a book which explains in a very approachable fashion the difficult concepts which exist in functional programming and how Scala relates to it. The author does not weigh you down with difficult examples, but has chosen to explain functional programming primarily, providing examples on Scala as a means of explaining those concepts. This was very unusual and very welcome. My only issue with the book is the size, as it is a very large, thick book and takes up a lot of space on my bookshelf!

Alvin Alexander writes in a very concise style that is easy to comprehend. He does exceptional job of translating the jargon associated with functional programming. This is a good place to start if you are new to both Scala and functional programming or just needing a refresher. Most FP books tend to start at too high of a level or already you have learned Haskell. This book will save you a lot of time by skipping both of those prerequisites even though you may want learn Haskell later to round out your FP knowledge.

I teach university-level big data classes and have found this text very helpful in grounding myself in functional principles and practices that I want to convey to my students. Mr. Alexander does a thorough job of describing how immutability and pure functions combine to produce bullet-proof ( or at least bullet resistant ) code. His emphasis on strong type-aware coding is sorely needed as multi-core concurrent/distributed programming become the norm. The book is long, but is worth following the careful description of the basic ideas underlying important concepts such as impure functions within a compositional framework. I think this would be a suitable book following an initial language such as Python.

I thought this book was amazing. While there a more technical introductions to FP such as Functional Programming in Scala, I had tried it and found it hard going. The exercises in particular went a bit beyond simply illustrating the concepts, and were just plain hard. This book on the other hand has a lot more conversational approach to FP. The author explain the concepts one by one, building on top of precedent lessons. He also talks about how he feels about each concept, what new ability it gives us, when it is good to use, etc.I often see Functional Programming in Scala as a book that gets recommended to aspiring functional programmers and that suggestion is very misguided. Functional Programming in Scala is terrific once you've been doing FP for a few months to a year.Functional Programming is daunting and hard to learn: Functional Programming Simplified makes that easier. It is the book to get you started on FP.Wish I could rate it more highly.

Most enjoyable book I’ve read by far. Simple, intuitive and very detailed, FP Simplified (Scala ed) covers everything you’d ever ask about Functional Programming paradigm. The author guides the reader through concepts in a way the reader will get the point. Then, he names the concept explained how it’s known as.I don’t recommend this book for people who don’t know Scala, though. I’d suggest to read some of Scala lang before read this one.

I'm learning Ocaml and have no interest in Scala, but since there are so few Ocaml books available, I was trying to find something that would give me a good overview of Functional Programming in general. This book promised to be that, and it delivered. I'd say 50% of the content (why functional programming, defining a bunch of terms, how to structure your applications) is not specific to Scala, and the parts that do talk specifically about Scala are directly applicable to other languages as well. Seeing examples of FP written in Scala has also helped me understand some of Ocaml's design decisions better.Overall the book is well-written and approachable. It covers everything you could want to know about functional programming, and every chapter has several links to more books and sources in case you want to dig even deeper.

The best book about functional programming i've read so far. It's like Alvin is beside me and do the pair programming together. So many "aha!" moments when reading this book, especially when he explains the concepts using clear and concise code + the quotes of computer scientists and references that make you learn even more than "just" functional programming and Scala.I am a reader since the version 0.1.2 (ebook).PS: This is my first book review on Amazon.

I discovered “The Other Side of the Mirror: An American Travels Through Syria” after reading Brooke Allen’s balanced short biography of Benazir Bhutto for Amazon’s icon series, and I’m really glad that I did. I admired Allen’s ability to create a complex portrait against a tumultuous background in a short space in “Benazir Bhutto”. “The Other Side of the Mirror” allows her more freedom to let her thoughts flow but also features extensive research. This is a travel memoir, in the tradition of countless other travel memoirs. There is a bit of intrepidness to it, not because it is in any way difficult to travel in Syria, but because Americans usually don’t. I was last in Syria as a child in the 1970s, when my family lived in Lebanon. Before the Lebanese Civil War, it was more common for American’s to visit Syria, and I was curious to know what the country is like now.Or rather, I was curious to know what Syria was like before the Civil War that began in 2011, about the time this book was published. Brooke Allen made two trips to Syria in 2009, one in the spring with her husband and teenaged daughters and one in the fall with a female friend, who had a particular interest in St. Simeon Stylites, an ascetic monk from 5th century Aleppo. Syria is as rich in history as any country could be, and Allen and her companions trekked all over in search of the culture’s ancient and modern history. There is quite a lot of it. Allen offers historical background, literary references, sometimes the accounts of travelers from other eras for comparison, and her own experiences and observations about the places she visits, people she meets, and culture that surrounds her as she visits markets, museums, hotels, ruins, churches, mosques, and restaurants. The book is organized loosely by topic: The Destination, Time, Ruins, Faith, Fighting, Leaders. Allen doesn’t follow a chronological order. Her two trips are presented more or less as one, not sequentially. “Faith” is by far the longest chapter and includes some history of Syria’s heterogeneous religious communities, from now-extinct pagan cults through Christianity, the Middle Ages, and the spread of Islam, visiting churches, monasteries, mosques, and museums. The introductory chapter includes Allen’s thoughts on the warm welcome she received and some of the obvious problems facing modern Syria, like suburban sprawl. The chapter entitled “Time” catches some topics that didn’t fit elsewhere but are evidence of Syria’s extraordinary history. Damascus and Aleppo have been inhabited for 8 millennia, after all, and Syria is a direct heir to Greco-Roman culture.“Ruins” is self-explanatory, though it doesn’t confine itself to Roman ruins. Allen begins with the story of the Baron Hotel, in which she stayed, nice enough but past its heyday. She visits Palmyra, Mari, Dura Europos, Ugarit, Bosra. The chapter on “Fighting” begins with the Tishreen Panorama Museum –and its peculiar North Korean design- and moves on to sites from the Crusades: Krak des Chevaliers, Qalaat Saladin, Aleppo Citadel, Damascus Citadel, the mosaic museum at Ma’arat al-Numan. In her final chapter, “Leaders”, Allen addresses the origins of the ubiquitous presidential portraits, which seem at odds with the image Bashar al-Assad has tried to cultivate, at least before the war. She touches on the history of the first four Caliphs and the balance of the qualities of invincibility and humility that Muslim cultures still expect in their leaders.Brooke Allen didn’t expect what she found in Syria, “a country whose reality confounded all my preconceived notions and inspired me to seek out many historical and literary sources for enlightenment.” That makes this travel memoir all the more poignant –and, since Syria has been in the news, all the more relevant. In some instances, we see the seeds of discontent that turned to protest that opened the door to violence in the many over-educated but unemployed men forced to scrape together a living any way they can. They are the causalities of the rapid adoption of neo-liberal economic policies under Pres. Bashar al-Assad, which eroded social safety nets, sanctions against Syria since it refused to support the invasion of Iraq in 2003, and 1.5 million Iraqi refugees that subsequently poured in. A sad predicament for a country with so much potential.

In 1982, I saw beautiful land filled with a generous, industrious people. One could easily trace the history of numerous people of antiquity through its treasure trove of archaeological sites. At the time, I felt many of its treasures had been looted. Seeing the destruction and chaos currently underway, It is comforting to know that many of those splendid artifacts are safely on display in museums and art galleries in other countries.

I'm really glad I read this book. I ordered it when I woke up to the fact that I had no knowledge at all about Syria except the current news about its role vis-a-vis Lebanon and Israel, and then the latest about the "Arab Spring." Well, I've seen Lawrence of Arabia numerous times, so I had some (wrong) impression of events in Damascus around the end of World War I.... I felt like U.S. news could tell me anything and I had no way to evaluate it.The Other Side of the Mirror gives a first hand account by an American visitor who made two trips there in the last 5-6 years and really got into the local vibe as a visitor can see it, and into the huge richness and complexity of the place and of its many ethnic/religious groups and their long histories. It gave me a sense of who the national leaders are right now and what a peculiar position they hold. It also enabled me to get beyond simplistic ideas of what they and Syria have now and what they want.In some places where the archeology got a bit too detailed for me, I skimmed, but in most chapters I read straight through. The author has a nice, humorous style and seems to have worked hard to find out objectively all she could. Her experiences there were basically very positive and stimulating, and she felt that Syrians generally treat western travelers very respectfully and helpfully. There are lots of photos. .

How ironic that I would run across this book portraying a secular country welcoming American travelers with typical Muslim hospitality when daily TV images are showing a country being torn apart by Civil War. As the title indicates, Allen's goal is to go beyond US media images which fail to provide a window looking out on the world but rather a mirror that reflects our own fears and obsessions. In this, she succeeds. She is bright, well read and well traveled, as well as an observant traveler eager to meet local citizens, enjoy their foods, and explore their history and culture. She first traveled to Syria in the spring of 2009 with her family and was so impressed that she went back with two friends for a much longer visit in the fall. It was a time when US troops were still fighting in neighboring Iraq and the US state department was warning US citizens against Syrian travel. Although Allen is an excellent writer and includes numerous personal photographs, the descriptions of archaeological ruins which abound in Syria become a bit much for the average reader. One of the book's strengths is the selected bibliography which would be a great benefit to US citizens whether they intend to visit Syria or not. The book however lacks any maps which would greatly help to orient readers. Allen seems overly impressed with the secular goals of Syria's government and surprisingly unaware of deep ethnic and religious divisions and resentments that will explode in violence by the time her book is published. Despite this, her book is an excellent guide to understanding Syrian -- and broader Middle Eastern -- history and culture.

Excellent reading! The author clearly portrays life in modern China for young people, especially young women. Huge numbers of them move to the cities for jobs from the rural areas to earn money for their families. The jobs at the factories are miserable, mind-numbing tasks with monstrous supervisors, high expectations, long hours and very little safety provisions for these 'country girls'. Most factories are closed cities, the women must sleep in factory dormitories and eat factory kitchen food. They are allowed one bright shining moment on Sundays when they can go out, meet friends, buy clothing and enjoy having money in their pockets. They can even slip on a new persona, a new name and the game is to keep switching up to better and better jobs. If you have ever wondered how your 'Made in China' products are made, this book will entertain, and educate you.Parts of it are bleak, but only in revealing the truth. The author tries to follow several 'girls'and learn their stories while also portraying huge societal change, in that a poor man's daughter is no longer seen as a burden or liability when the family cannot provide a dowry or find a husband for her. A daughter may even achieve a status close to that of a son! The young women feel that their status is changing and they resist the old ways of getting married and having children. Some of them can say 'I want to work,' or they may send money home but never return to their provincial villages after seeing the life in the big city. For most of her time in China the author passes as Chinese and she has the unique ability to see the issues from many different perspectives.

Having read everything written by Peter Hessler, I turned to his wife Leslie and her perspective on the young girlswho came in from country villages a decade ago, to make money to send home. Of course, it changed them, andsome never went back. When they did return for Chinese New Year, their financial clout in the family changed the dynamicsbetween parents and children. The author follows two young women over a period of a few years as they job hop, andalso tells of her search for her own roots, since her family got geographically separated during the Cultural Revolution. Some stayed, some ended up in Taiwan and some in the U.S.

I have had the good fortune to meet and work with some Chinese women who are recent émigrés to the U.S. and have found them to be extraordinarily resourceful and independent. I purchased some books in order to better understand a culture that produces young people with such determination. This is not a book about historical figures or great deeds, nor is it an academic book dealing with politics or economic theory. Instead it is a third person journal which traces the lives of two particular young women who have made the decision to leave their old village life behind and travel to the city in search of employment and a new way of life. Their stories are told with compassion but unwavering objectivity. What they find and what happens to them along the way is the story of millions of young Chinese girls from rural families who make the same decision. Each one of them is different but most are driven by the shared goal of independence and a desire to better themselves and improve the lives of the family members they leave behind. They all face hardships which must be overcome in order to pursue their dream. They do this in a uniquely Chinese way: blending a strong sense of obligation to family and their traditional village values with a new faster paced urban way of life and an emerging sense of autonomy. They are pursuing an individual destiny despite being born into a stratified social order where futures are largely determined by circumstances of birth. The interplay between the two sometimes opposing and vastly different world views is what this book is really about. I found it informative, compelling and even inspiring at times This is not a book about making tennis shoes

The book opened my eyes to the desire and desperation these young ladies had to earn money. I found the book to be a bit "wordy" at times, but that may just be a peeve of mine. The story was excellent and informative. The act of frequently changing jobs surprised me. In America we seem to look more positively at a person who stays with the same company for many, many years. The ladies in the book were not afraid of jumping from one place to another, always looking for a larger income. The living conditions were less than ideal, often horrid, and yet the desire to make money, and send it back home, outweighed the poor conditions. Of course, after a few years most young ladies returned home. If they were already married they returned to their families; if not, they soon found husbands. I got the impression that the very young people left to "go out", or rather, left their villages to work. Married, with children, or not, the money was the goal. I assume from the book the harsh conditions in factory work were usually only endured by the very young. Overall, the book was informative, interesting, and worth purchasing.

If you do not own this book yet – go buy it. Like, NOW! You will want to own it and it will sit on the top shelf with all your other favorite books. And then go see the movie. You can thank me later. No really, you will.Sixteen year-old Simon is keeping a secret from his family and best friends: he is gay. When a fellow student anonymously posts on tumblr that he is gay, Simon – also anonymously – tells him his secret. They strike up a companionship through email and then Simon’s emails get into the wrong hands. He will be blackmailed in order to keep his secret “behind closet doors.” The rest, you will need to read to find out: and I trust that you will. What are you waiting for, I would have thought you would’ve already bought it and started reading it by now? Wasn’t my intro convincing enough?!This book will bring about all the feels. There is one part of the book where I was desperate to hug Simon. I found my emotions going from anger, sadness and outright laughter all within a few short chapters: it was an emotional rollercoaster that I was glad to ride. It also made me so thankful that I never have to relive high school ever again. I can’t even imagine having to go through high school with social media; and here I thought dial up AOL instant messenger chat rooms were brutal. You will fall in love with all the characters: I hated one tremendously, but I guess things changed in the end (just a tad)…look at me, I am growing.I also loved author Becky Albertalli‘s writing style. It was fresh and real. Are you still reading my review?! Thank you, but what the heck are you waiting for…I already told you to start reading this book! 😉

I’m totally kicking myself for waiting so long to read Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda! This was just about the cutest novel ever! When I was midway through my ebook I went out and grabbed a paperback so I could have it on my shelf. That’s how much I loved it even before I was finished! The book starts off with Simon in the closet about his sexuality and emailing back and forth with an anonymous boy from school, ‘Blue’, who was in the same boat. Simon found himself getting more and more attached to this boy without even knowing his true identity, desperately wanting to meet in real life. These interactions were everything! I love the connection they had and the support they gave each other as they worked their way around coming out to family and friends. There was even a bit of teasing and flirting going on as they tested the waters of their friendship to see if there was the potential for it to go further. I just loved the progression of their relationship from start to finish and found it just completely adorable!Simon is a breath of fresh air of a character. He wasn’t just adorable with Blue but in every other capacity as well. He gets along with others easily and genuinely wants to find the good in people and make friends. He sort of navigates a lot of life’s changes throughout the book in sometimes awkward and hilarious ways and sometimes in serious and real ways that made him that much more relatable.“But I’m tired of coming out. All I ever do is come out. I try not to change, but I keep changing, in all these tiny ways. I get a girlfriend. I have a beer. And every freaking time, I have to reintroduce myself to the universe all over again.”If Simon and Blue weren’t enough, Simon’s relationship with his family and friends also made this book everything that is was. Little family moments cracked me up like The Chipmunks, the Facebook Scavenger Hunt, and of course OREO’s! That’s the sort of family I strive for with my own kids, a close knit family that have fun together. Simon’s group of friends with all of their ups and downs (and love triangles…) were a great addition and showed the reality of what friendship can be and the art of forgiveness.Seriously, if you haven’t read this book yet, don’t be like me and wait for anything! Grab yourself a copy and introduce yourself to Simon and the rest of the amazing cast of characters. Don’t forget to grab yourself some OREO’s for when you do!

I think this is a really well written book with a good story. It is written by a child psychologist, who is writing it in a way that is relatable to teenage audiences. It is still a really entertaining, heartfelt, heart-grabbing page turner. I think the characters are realistic and never go too over the top. They are real teens that react the way real teens would to situations. Such as alcohol at parties. Not all teens are dumb and think it's cool to get drunk. Also, the way people react to someone else dating a person they like is realistically illustrated.I think the author really, accurately gets in the head of what it's like to be a teen struggling to come out as gay, and his whole experience surrounding being a gay teen. The way it feels to them when other people make insensitive jokes/remarks unknowingly in front of them. The way it feels when other people know and hold it over them. The way it feels when the anxiety won't let them be open, even to their closest friends even when they know the reaction will be positive. It was really fun to follow along with the emails Simon and "Blue" exchange...trying to guess at "Blue's" identity along with Simon. Great book. Can't wait for the movie!

The characters were pretty generic and one dimensional. I think this book only became popular because of the message they were trying to send to readers and definitely not for the writing. I mean, the message is why I picked up the book in the first place and I was really, really looking forward to it. Sadly, this book fell flat. It's not the worst book I've ever read, it was just mediocre. The author inserted information and characters that didn't need to be in the book and seems to have been haphazardly thrown in with no idea how it'd be tied into the story later. Well, it's simple, the author just doesn't bring it up again. No one will notice, right? If you're looking for inspiration on coming out, then I'd suggest asking real people on what they went through personally. The book tried to do that by having Simon and Blue "talk" through email about it but they're both new to coming out and thus have no knowledge of how to do it or how it will go. I don't think this book would be the best informative tool on that front.

This series has been fantastic! Each of the books is different, but they are all tied together by the location of Gypsum Creek. Characters and past story lines are referenced, but that's not the only reason to read the prior books in the series. Each book is worth reading by itself. This is one talented author who has developed a series where stories are focused on fated mates and the romance each couple experiences. Sex is secondary and this is the very definition of erotic romance. The romance is foremost and these romances are swoon-worthy!Each book in this wonderful series has some sort of secondary story that adds another level of sophistication to this author's work. The characters are well developed, the world where they live believable and descriptive. The old world charm of the town of Gypsum Creek is juxtaposed against the modern idea of the shifters who live there. It all works, though.I highly recommend this book, this series and this author to all romance, erotic romance and shifter story lovers. There is a well deserved HEA and no cliffhanger in each of the stories. It's a pleasure for me to read this book and I voluntarily received it from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Dillon and Natalie's story is yet another fantastic chapter in the lives of the wolves of Gypsum Creek. Natalie is helping her brother David bring life back to the sleepy town of Gypsum Creek. When David's old friend Dillon returns to help, he is immediately fascinated with and drawn to Natalie. He is on the run from his father, though, and tries hard to resist her. She too feels the pull between them but dreams of a bigger life outside of the little town she grew up in. Just when they finally realize they can't resist each other any longer, they are kidnapped by Dillon's father and taken back to Dillon's childhood home. There his father reveals his nefarious plans not only for Natalie, but Dillon's sister as well. The three of them manage to escape and return to Gypsum Creek where the whole town chips in to help Dillon and his sister be free from their father. The final showdown between father and son left me speechless and on the edge of my seat. As always love and good prevail and Dillon and Natalie get their happily ever after. This book is full of well written, loveable (and hateable) characters and as always with Serena's books, was an absolute pleasure to read.I received an ARC copy of this book and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily.

Gypsum Creek is my new favorite paranormal romance series! This book does not disappoint! She has big dreams, he is running from his past. When these two spirited souls meet, it sets the room on fire! When they are both on the same job for ole Millie, tensions fly but they ultimately cannot stay away from each other. When his past comes back to haunt him, he must trust his mate and his sister to be able to rescue them from his father. With the help of the magic and mystics of the wolves and their mates of Gypsum Creek, Dillion saves them from his father. If only temporarily. Very great writing and I love the plot of Gypsum Creek! You will love this series too!**I received a free ARC copy of this book for my honest review**

Restoration: Wolves of Gypsum Creek was a great story from Serena Meadows. The story centers around Dillion and Natalie, who are planning the restoration of a house together. They meet, and sparks fly! There are some unusual underlying situations that develop with Dillion’s father. Overall, this was an entertaining, fun read with occasional bits of steam, excitement, and danger. The book ended very abruptly….and I’m not even sure it IS the end? There were a number of things left hanging: his sister, their lives, etc.Though these facets of the book bothered me, I still think it was a good read.I voluntarily received an Advance Reader Copy of this book for an honest review.

Natalie has been working hard to restore Gypsum Creek with her family and friends, including the surly Dillion. However, she yearns for excitement and glamor. Her attraction to Dillion may lead her to more than she bargained for. Dillion has been avoiding his father’s entanglements and knows he cannot give in to the pull he feels toward Natalie. It could endanger his sister’s life. I enjoyed how Serena Meadows peppered her book with humor and I’m lookin forward to Bethany’s story. The Wolves of Gypsum Creek is a series I can recommend. I voluntarily received a copy of Restoration and am leaving an honest review.

Restoration: Wolves og Gypsum Creek by Serena Meadows is a quick read if you love shifters, magic, mystery and a HEA this a must read. The characters and storyline was well written and enjoyable to read. Dillion and Natalie are both strong characters and that made for a well balanced couple. The attraction between the couple simmered along nice as they engaged in a chemistry that was magical, steamy and hot. I cannot wait to read the rest of this series.I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This series draws me in each time I read the next boom. With each book focusing around a new couple you are never bored. You also get to see all the other characters along the way. This one was a bit different because a lot of it takes p!ace out of Gypsum Creek. I got a bit frustrated with Natalie in various parts because she seemed very self centered and naive. It all works out in the end. I k is what's coming now and I just can't wait! It has to be a certain white wolf and a damsel just waiting for him!!!

Dillion and Natalie were both great. I was so glad that Natalie was finally able to figure out that she could be happy with simple things. Dillion was so strong to stand up to his dad. I am glad they were able to get to Bethany. Dillion and Natalie are so good together. I loved seeing characters from other books helping make everything okay for Dillion, Natalie and Bethany. I can't wait to find out what happens next.I received an ARC and am leaving my honest and voluntary review.
