From the Inside Flap

"Balanced, authoritative . . . brilliant." --"The London Times "Written by one of the great clinical writers of the twentieth century, Migraine . . . should be read as much for its brilliant insights into the nature of our mental functioning as for its discussion of the migraine." --"The New York Times Book Review The many manifestations of migraine can vary dramatically from one patient to another, even within the same patient at different times. Among the most compelling and perplexing of these symptoms are the strange visual hallucinations and distortions of space, time, and body image which migraineurs sometimes experience. Portrayals of these uncanny states have found their way into many works of art, from the heavenly visions of Hildegard von Bingen to Alice in Wonderland. Dr. Oliver Sacks argues that migraine cannot be understood simply as an illness, but must be viewed as a complex condition with a unique role to play in each individual's life. "I am sure . . . that any layman who is interested in the relation between the body and mind . . . will find the book as fascinating as I have." --W. H. Auden, "The New York Review of Books

Awesome book!!! As a long time chronic or common migraine sufferer (as defined by Sacks) and an often frustrated one at that - this book gave me much appreciated information about my condition and it's evolution. I have little doubt every migraine sufferer will find their story in his book regardless of one's specific symptoms and experience as a migraineur. There simply is no other book or part of a book which comes close to this read at virtually every level of understanding or appreciation of migraine. The medically-based discussion can be more than challenging to read and comprehend. However, with some persistence, a dictionary and thinking about context I could understand what was necessary to appreciate the physiological and biological basis for migraine. It is a complex condition which has defied understanding and treatment for centuries so it defies the simpler explanations I'd hoped for! However, I do not believe this is the most helpful or important part of the book for the migraineur. The book gave me relief, hope and empathy - for myself and for anyone dealing with a chronic pain syndrome of any kind. Most importantly and so often overlooked are the deep psycho-physiological issues associated with most long-term migraineurs which Mr. Sacks explains repeatedly and with many case studies. Over his career he REGULARLY cared for over a thousand migraineurs, saw their protracted battle, how the condition can change and morph inexplicably. A person cannot live with migraine for protracted periods of time without changing who they are, physiologically and psychologically, and how they approach life. I found myself in this book (or a composite of myself) and that is healing in and of itself.Importantly, I learned migraine experience IS NOT a one-size fits all condition. It defies simplicity or neat categorization. For this reason, one really needs to read the entire book and re-read, if not study, those parts which resonate with the reader. It took me a couple months (and I am retired) to work through the book. To have not done so would have been to short-change myself. It worth the effort - if only for peace of mind - finally knowing what I needed to know with a high level of confidence from an actual medical professional with unequalled credibility.Yes, there are plenty of treatment and coping suggestions in the book. This includes Mr.Sacks recommended approach for physicians treating migraine. Unfortunately his approach is not what is followed in our traditional, mainstream healthcare system today. The book reinforced my own long term approach to my migraines - in effect being my own GP and advocate for coping with migraine. "Migraine" will be a long term, critical tool in my migraine toolbox.

A very informative book! I learned new-to-me very “old”information about migraines, especially about the various types of migraine-associated conditions.Dr. Sacks points out that a violent throbbing headache is only one symptom of migraine, and that headache can last from three hours to several days. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, vertigo, sensitivity to light and sounds, abdominal pain, dropping pulse rate, unusual drowsiness, etc.I found the historical information and descriptions very interesting. That said, this is more technical than most of Dr. Sacks’ books, but if you have knowledge of medical or associated fields, I doubt you’ll have problems reading the material presented.I skipped chapters about various approaches, measures, prophylaxis and treatments of migraine. Those chapters are dated, so I suggest you read current online information. Again, the historical perspective is interesting, because in the present time we migraineurs have many treatment options.

This book, though older with only a few recent updates, is a fairly extensive look at migraine. Oliver Sacks does a good job of including all of the different types of migraine conditions and aura symptoms through presentation of many case studies and some research. I would give this a higher rating, except that the book is very wordy with a large technical vocabulary... much more so than Sacks' Musicophilia. I am a migraineur and a scientist, but I am not in the medical field; however, I have done a lot of research into migraine literature and still had trouble with some of the technical terms. It has taken me a while to get through this book because of that. Having said that, I am glad that I've read it, and enjoy the perspective that Dr. Sacks has on the topic (he was also a migraine sufferer). I only wish he had had a chance to write a more recent update to the book as there has been so much more done on migraine in the last decade... it would be nice to hear his take on all of it.

Oliver Sacks was such a brilliant, dedicated, and kind person. He pushed the boundaries of migraine knowledge, and it's very interesting to see his first-hand view of discovering all these facts. He clearly cares about his patients. As a migraine sufferer himself, he understands and is motivated to figure it out!The book is very clinical and peppered with jargon, but I still found it fun to read. It has a ton of information and observations that I haven't found in any modern migraine literature online. For example, red migraines vs. white migraines (sweating, flushed, hot vs. pale, drawn, cold). Or the three ways migraines end. Or the many weird forms the symptoms can take - not only the aura, but also the prodrome: the period before the migraine really starts, when you might experience euphoria, intense hunger, irritability, sleepiness, or weird changes in speech, ideation, or perception of time and space. Crazy stuff. Also interesting commentary on the connection with depression.Lots of interesting character profiles of people who dealt with severe and often abnormal migraine types - Sacks looked for the weirdest cases. Interesting historical perspective on what people did and thought about migraines before the medical aspect was understood or accepted.

Deeply thoughtful. Though I do not suffer from migraines, this book really delved into Sack's study of migraines from both a medical and observational perspective. The book would be a great addition for someone who has migraines or who loves a migraine sufferer. Oliver Sacks could write about potatoes and still be interesting. He entwines his own stories about life with his work as a physician and healer. He will be deeply missed. I have read most of his books.

I don't normally write reviews but for anyone struggling with being a survivor of sexual abuse I Highly recommend this book. It is written in a way that lets us all know we are not only not alone but we are connected and supported. It has been a wonderful help and one that I re'read when ever I am feeling down or overwhelmed by my thought's.

This is a must read for any professional who works with survivors of sexual violence, including non-mental health professionals who care for adults and children and are regularly frustrated by their "challenging" patients who have multiple medical problems, have difficulty following medical advice, or continue to engage in activities that often place their health in greater risk. The voices of the survivors presented in this anthology give raw and accessible insight to many of the unique experiences and ongoing realities of those impacted.

This anthology offers solace for survivors and a sense of hope. A must read for those who have survived and are supporting survivors

powerful stories. I work at a university-based women's center and have shared some stories with collages I work with to help them understand the experience of survivors of sexual assault... other stories will be really helpful to share with survivors themselves. It has helped shape and inform the work I do.

Excellent resource for survivors of sexual violence. Healing for the heart and soul. Everyone should read this great anthology and pass it on to a friend.

hard topic but great book.

Choose to transform the negative to a very positive energy and light! Courage and Love are vital on this planet.A must read !!! And if you are in a profession of health care or even know someone affected by sexual violence please share this.... !!

Though this book was written by and for women who have survived heteropatriarchal rape culture, I nevertheless found this book to be extremely beneficial to my own healing process as a gay male survivor of domestic violence and sexual assault. As somebody who reads a lot of feminist anthologies, I can honestly say that this is the one of the best I've read in a while and one of the most important. The essays in this book are powerful, heartfelt, and wise and I encourage anyone who has survived male sexual violence to read this book. With International Women's Day (March 8th) just around the corner, I would also recommend buying a copy of this book as a gift to your closest female friends and family members. In conclusion, let me just say thank you to all of the brave women who contributed essays in this life-changing anthology for sharing your difficult experiences of sexual trauma, healing, and resistance and thank you to AK Press for making sure that these voices get heard.
