From the Inside Flap

While doing research as a medical student at Yale and then as a resident and faculty member at Harvard, Louann Brizendine discovered that almost all of the clinical data in existence on neurology, psychology, and neurobiology focused exclusively on males. In response to the overwhelming need for information on the female mind, Brizendine established the first clinic in the country to study and treat women's brain function. At the same time, The National Institutes of Health began including female subjects in almost all of its studies for the first time. The result has been an explosion of new data on the female brain in recent years. In" The Female Brain, Dr. Brizendine distills all of this information in a highly accessible way in order to educate women about their unique brain-body-behavior. For instance, why are women more verbal than men? Why do women remember details of fights that men can't remember at all? Why do women tend to form deeper bonds with their female friends than men do with their male counterparts? Dr. Brizendine explores these questions and many others that have stumped the sexes throughout the ages. This revolutionary book combines two decades of Brizendine's own work, real-life stories from her clinical practice, and all of the latest information from the scientific community at large to provide a truly comprehensive look at the way women's minds work.

Everyone who is a woman, married to a woman, works with women, or has a female as a child, should read this book. It also has the most useful information I could find on Peri and Post menopause. We use it in all of our pre- marital classes. Very eye opening and helps all understand the great mystery of why we women are so complex. It tracks development of the brain and the interplay of harmones effect on our thinking, acting, and their physical expression through all the stages of life. AMAZING! I do not know the author, but I can tell you this, Louann is has done a great service to the human population in the compling and mastering the research, and then handing it on to us. She knows her field!

I am 50 pages into this book, and I cannot finish it.This book makes me hate my own gender, and, chapter after chapter, says that all women's bad behavior is a result of their hormones and "it's just how we're wired." Furthermore, it only discusses the stereotypical female traits. (Boy crazy, obsessed about our looks, and not as good at math).I was so looking forward to reading a book about the female brain and it's differences from the male brain, but this is a pigeon-holing cop-out.

I read both The male brain and female brain focusing mostly on the "mature brain" chapters. Great information and I learned so much. I believe however that in The Female Brain there was more bias towards women. At times it read like a womens magazine article to uplift women. Womens suffrage in the past is acknowledged by everyone but men dying in wars to save nations, working hard labor and dying young also needs to be considered. I wonder if today's women erratic behavior isn't more social change than hormonal. Leaving your husband for no reason at 60 is wrong no matter your hormonal change.

This book was a revelation and presents compelling information every woman (and man) should know. It is well-written for the non-clinical person and made a liar out of me, since I used to insist my mood did not vary at different points in either my life or menstrual cycle. The content should probably be required reading at some point in a woman's life. It is both reassuring and unsettling.

I learned so much about the physiological aspect of the aging process - the entire lifespan - of women. I would recommend this to every woman I know and men too. This book would be especially helpful for women who are headed into menopause/post menopause, to get an idea of what to expect.

I read this book years ago and still remember some of the insights I learned from it. I bought and read the sequel "The Male Brain" and found that book equally informative about people's behaviors. I heard the author interviewed on various NPR programs, including Terry Gross' "Fresh Air" and my local public radio station KQED's program "Forum". This book and its "companion" "The Male Brain" should be delightful reading for parents, their teenage and adult kids and college freshmen, who must navigate life's challenges on their own as newly minted, liberated adults in the fast-moving, evolving environments in colleges (and universities), especially if they live on-campus or away from home (off-campus housing). These books can be used as "self-help" books are budding adults, whether they are young men, young women or young couples. Long-term couples and their parents can benefit hugely from reading this book and its companion.

Great book, to better understand how hormones affect the brain, incl. childhood, puberty, motherhood and menopause.

One of the best books I've read on the difference between men and women. Not only describes what goes on in a female's brain but also in the male brain from conception thru death.EVERY adolescent girl OR boy should be required to read this by the time they get out of high school!!Read this when I was 72. Wish I could have read it when I was 18. Unfortunately Brizendine didn't get around to writing it until I was 63.

Great book about the Sioux---if you like this book you will also want to read the following 99-cent similar books on the Sioux:1 The Dakotas or Sioux in Minnesota as They Were in 1834 (1908)2 Among the Sioux of Dakota (1881)3 The Arikara Narrative of the Campaign Against the Hostile Dakotas June, 18764 The Brothers Pond: The First Resident Missionaries Among the Dakotahs (1892)5 Dahkotah Land and Dahkotah Life: With the History of the Fur Traders (1859)6 Four Weeks Among Some of the Sioux Tribes of Dakota and Nebraska (1882)7 The Conquest of the Sioux (1900)8 Sketches of Frontier and Indian Life on the Upper Missouri & Great Plains ... during a continuous residence in the Dakotas between 1863 and 1889 (1897)9 Soldiering in Dakota, Among the Indians: In 1863-4-5 (1888)10 On the Border with CROOK (1891)

This is one the best books I have read about he plains Indians.Following Luther Standing Bear, thru his childhood on the plains andexplaining how Teepees are made, how they would skin buffalo and useevery part. All the traditions and customs they had. How they took care of theirown; especially the elderly, who were highly respected and treated with careand dignity. Then we follow Standing Bear, to the modern, white man's world, wherehe realizes for his tribe to survive and himself as well, goes to enroll in the first Indian School...Carlisle School for Indian children, established in 1879. Luther was the FIRST to complete his education here. This is a very well written, first person account of life on the plains and into to the 19th century.Could not put this book down.

I loved the insight into Sioux life, customs and culture. Especially the difference between before and after experience with the white people. I soon became aware of the complete difference between the perceptions of our history, and our teaching after this book. This would be a great source for answering some questions about what were the root cause of the hard feelings and bitterness on both sides.

I have no blood ties to native Americans but greatly feel the tug of the ties of humanity toward them. Their plight makes me so sad. This book increased my feelings. Luther writes in an easy to read way and also in a way that makes you feel close to him even though this book is nearly 100 years old. And even at that, the book doesn’t feel so old—could have been written recently as the struggles continue to be so similar. He writes of his life growing up and then into his adulthood and I couldn’t put it down—took me a couple days to read. His desperation to please his father was heartwarming and inspiring, and it translated beyond when he went to the Carlisle school and further. He wanted so much to be brave and do what was best for his people and himself. So much could be said here!I wish so much that the way America came to be what it is would have been done differently. And it could have been. Though I don’t have the answers, I am grateful to have read this book and been given a better glimpse into the life of the Oglala Sioux, and more specifically, Luther Standing Bear.

This man lived a life that was so vivid and different than can be imagined. To go from living in his tribe to a successful man adapting to so much changes in his life is incomprehensible for anyone to understand. After reading this book, you WILL get a true respect for what the AMERICAN INDIANS were put through and their wholesome way of life as meant to be by our creator.

I have read no better book about Native Americans than this one. It is a great story for white people, and all other non-Indians, and a call to respect these "first Americans". It is also a call for all Native Americans to take their place as full citizens and members of this nation-and never accept anything less than what has been promised in treaties to them. We non-natives must stand with them to insure that they are not allowed to languish in broken promises and poverty.

“My People the Sioux”, by Luther Standing Bear This modest autobiography deserves applause on several counts. It is the self-told reminiscences of a Sioux tribesman whose life bridged the worlds of both the “wild Sioux” of the Plains and the “civilized Sioux” of the early 20th century. The author is quite gentlemanly and writes in such a warm style that the reader will soon think he’s reading a letter from an old friend. Of course he polishes the Indians’ apple a bit but that’s okay and nothing a couple grains of salt won’t ease. The only statement he makes that is laughably off-base is that Sioux women don’t gossip when they work together. There is a lot of information about the “everyday” side of Sioux life and relations that is very interesting. The reader will also see that the Sioux weren’t simply howling, bloodthirsty ghouls who happened to be the best light cavalry in the world. Fact is, they were often active negotiators and cooperators exhibiting an admirable patience, concern and self-control, and often in situations that people of other races might well have “lost their cool”. Very good reading.

This book is unlike any other I have read. . Luther Standing Bear gives a true picture of the life of his people. One can discover the actual facts of the life of an influential man and the way of life of the Indians; not the untrue way they were depicted in movies and other books. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the real life of a Sioux. Well done!
