I discovered “The Other Side of the Mirror: An American Travels Through Syria” after reading Brooke Allen’s balanced short biography of Benazir Bhutto for Amazon’s icon series, and I’m really glad that I did. I admired Allen’s ability to create a complex portrait against a tumultuous background in a short space in “Benazir Bhutto”. “The Other Side of the Mirror” allows her more freedom to let her thoughts flow but also features extensive research. This is a travel memoir, in the tradition of countless other travel memoirs. There is a bit of intrepidness to it, not because it is in any way difficult to travel in Syria, but because Americans usually don’t. I was last in Syria as a child in the 1970s, when my family lived in Lebanon. Before the Lebanese Civil War, it was more common for American’s to visit Syria, and I was curious to know what the country is like now.Or rather, I was curious to know what Syria was like before the Civil War that began in 2011, about the time this book was published. Brooke Allen made two trips to Syria in 2009, one in the spring with her husband and teenaged daughters and one in the fall with a female friend, who had a particular interest in St. Simeon Stylites, an ascetic monk from 5th century Aleppo. Syria is as rich in history as any country could be, and Allen and her companions trekked all over in search of the culture’s ancient and modern history. There is quite a lot of it. Allen offers historical background, literary references, sometimes the accounts of travelers from other eras for comparison, and her own experiences and observations about the places she visits, people she meets, and culture that surrounds her as she visits markets, museums, hotels, ruins, churches, mosques, and restaurants. The book is organized loosely by topic: The Destination, Time, Ruins, Faith, Fighting, Leaders. Allen doesn’t follow a chronological order. Her two trips are presented more or less as one, not sequentially. “Faith” is by far the longest chapter and includes some history of Syria’s heterogeneous religious communities, from now-extinct pagan cults through Christianity, the Middle Ages, and the spread of Islam, visiting churches, monasteries, mosques, and museums. The introductory chapter includes Allen’s thoughts on the warm welcome she received and some of the obvious problems facing modern Syria, like suburban sprawl. The chapter entitled “Time” catches some topics that didn’t fit elsewhere but are evidence of Syria’s extraordinary history. Damascus and Aleppo have been inhabited for 8 millennia, after all, and Syria is a direct heir to Greco-Roman culture.“Ruins” is self-explanatory, though it doesn’t confine itself to Roman ruins. Allen begins with the story of the Baron Hotel, in which she stayed, nice enough but past its heyday. She visits Palmyra, Mari, Dura Europos, Ugarit, Bosra. The chapter on “Fighting” begins with the Tishreen Panorama Museum –and its peculiar North Korean design- and moves on to sites from the Crusades: Krak des Chevaliers, Qalaat Saladin, Aleppo Citadel, Damascus Citadel, the mosaic museum at Ma’arat al-Numan. In her final chapter, “Leaders”, Allen addresses the origins of the ubiquitous presidential portraits, which seem at odds with the image Bashar al-Assad has tried to cultivate, at least before the war. She touches on the history of the first four Caliphs and the balance of the qualities of invincibility and humility that Muslim cultures still expect in their leaders.Brooke Allen didn’t expect what she found in Syria, “a country whose reality confounded all my preconceived notions and inspired me to seek out many historical and literary sources for enlightenment.” That makes this travel memoir all the more poignant –and, since Syria has been in the news, all the more relevant. In some instances, we see the seeds of discontent that turned to protest that opened the door to violence in the many over-educated but unemployed men forced to scrape together a living any way they can. They are the causalities of the rapid adoption of neo-liberal economic policies under Pres. Bashar al-Assad, which eroded social safety nets, sanctions against Syria since it refused to support the invasion of Iraq in 2003, and 1.5 million Iraqi refugees that subsequently poured in. A sad predicament for a country with so much potential.

In 1982, I saw beautiful land filled with a generous, industrious people. One could easily trace the history of numerous people of antiquity through its treasure trove of archaeological sites. At the time, I felt many of its treasures had been looted. Seeing the destruction and chaos currently underway, It is comforting to know that many of those splendid artifacts are safely on display in museums and art galleries in other countries.

I'm really glad I read this book. I ordered it when I woke up to the fact that I had no knowledge at all about Syria except the current news about its role vis-a-vis Lebanon and Israel, and then the latest about the "Arab Spring." Well, I've seen Lawrence of Arabia numerous times, so I had some (wrong) impression of events in Damascus around the end of World War I.... I felt like U.S. news could tell me anything and I had no way to evaluate it.The Other Side of the Mirror gives a first hand account by an American visitor who made two trips there in the last 5-6 years and really got into the local vibe as a visitor can see it, and into the huge richness and complexity of the place and of its many ethnic/religious groups and their long histories. It gave me a sense of who the national leaders are right now and what a peculiar position they hold. It also enabled me to get beyond simplistic ideas of what they and Syria have now and what they want.In some places where the archeology got a bit too detailed for me, I skimmed, but in most chapters I read straight through. The author has a nice, humorous style and seems to have worked hard to find out objectively all she could. Her experiences there were basically very positive and stimulating, and she felt that Syrians generally treat western travelers very respectfully and helpfully. There are lots of photos. .

How ironic that I would run across this book portraying a secular country welcoming American travelers with typical Muslim hospitality when daily TV images are showing a country being torn apart by Civil War. As the title indicates, Allen's goal is to go beyond US media images which fail to provide a window looking out on the world but rather a mirror that reflects our own fears and obsessions. In this, she succeeds. She is bright, well read and well traveled, as well as an observant traveler eager to meet local citizens, enjoy their foods, and explore their history and culture. She first traveled to Syria in the spring of 2009 with her family and was so impressed that she went back with two friends for a much longer visit in the fall. It was a time when US troops were still fighting in neighboring Iraq and the US state department was warning US citizens against Syrian travel. Although Allen is an excellent writer and includes numerous personal photographs, the descriptions of archaeological ruins which abound in Syria become a bit much for the average reader. One of the book's strengths is the selected bibliography which would be a great benefit to US citizens whether they intend to visit Syria or not. The book however lacks any maps which would greatly help to orient readers. Allen seems overly impressed with the secular goals of Syria's government and surprisingly unaware of deep ethnic and religious divisions and resentments that will explode in violence by the time her book is published. Despite this, her book is an excellent guide to understanding Syrian -- and broader Middle Eastern -- history and culture.

Excellent reading! The author clearly portrays life in modern China for young people, especially young women. Huge numbers of them move to the cities for jobs from the rural areas to earn money for their families. The jobs at the factories are miserable, mind-numbing tasks with monstrous supervisors, high expectations, long hours and very little safety provisions for these 'country girls'. Most factories are closed cities, the women must sleep in factory dormitories and eat factory kitchen food. They are allowed one bright shining moment on Sundays when they can go out, meet friends, buy clothing and enjoy having money in their pockets. They can even slip on a new persona, a new name and the game is to keep switching up to better and better jobs. If you have ever wondered how your 'Made in China' products are made, this book will entertain, and educate you.Parts of it are bleak, but only in revealing the truth. The author tries to follow several 'girls'and learn their stories while also portraying huge societal change, in that a poor man's daughter is no longer seen as a burden or liability when the family cannot provide a dowry or find a husband for her. A daughter may even achieve a status close to that of a son! The young women feel that their status is changing and they resist the old ways of getting married and having children. Some of them can say 'I want to work,' or they may send money home but never return to their provincial villages after seeing the life in the big city. For most of her time in China the author passes as Chinese and she has the unique ability to see the issues from many different perspectives.

Having read everything written by Peter Hessler, I turned to his wife Leslie and her perspective on the young girlswho came in from country villages a decade ago, to make money to send home. Of course, it changed them, andsome never went back. When they did return for Chinese New Year, their financial clout in the family changed the dynamicsbetween parents and children. The author follows two young women over a period of a few years as they job hop, andalso tells of her search for her own roots, since her family got geographically separated during the Cultural Revolution. Some stayed, some ended up in Taiwan and some in the U.S.

I have had the good fortune to meet and work with some Chinese women who are recent émigrés to the U.S. and have found them to be extraordinarily resourceful and independent. I purchased some books in order to better understand a culture that produces young people with such determination. This is not a book about historical figures or great deeds, nor is it an academic book dealing with politics or economic theory. Instead it is a third person journal which traces the lives of two particular young women who have made the decision to leave their old village life behind and travel to the city in search of employment and a new way of life. Their stories are told with compassion but unwavering objectivity. What they find and what happens to them along the way is the story of millions of young Chinese girls from rural families who make the same decision. Each one of them is different but most are driven by the shared goal of independence and a desire to better themselves and improve the lives of the family members they leave behind. They all face hardships which must be overcome in order to pursue their dream. They do this in a uniquely Chinese way: blending a strong sense of obligation to family and their traditional village values with a new faster paced urban way of life and an emerging sense of autonomy. They are pursuing an individual destiny despite being born into a stratified social order where futures are largely determined by circumstances of birth. The interplay between the two sometimes opposing and vastly different world views is what this book is really about. I found it informative, compelling and even inspiring at times This is not a book about making tennis shoes

The book opened my eyes to the desire and desperation these young ladies had to earn money. I found the book to be a bit "wordy" at times, but that may just be a peeve of mine. The story was excellent and informative. The act of frequently changing jobs surprised me. In America we seem to look more positively at a person who stays with the same company for many, many years. The ladies in the book were not afraid of jumping from one place to another, always looking for a larger income. The living conditions were less than ideal, often horrid, and yet the desire to make money, and send it back home, outweighed the poor conditions. Of course, after a few years most young ladies returned home. If they were already married they returned to their families; if not, they soon found husbands. I got the impression that the very young people left to "go out", or rather, left their villages to work. Married, with children, or not, the money was the goal. I assume from the book the harsh conditions in factory work were usually only endured by the very young. Overall, the book was informative, interesting, and worth purchasing.

He will be blackmailed in order to keep his secret “behind closet doors.” The rest, you will need to read to find out: and I trust that you will. What are you waiting for, I would have thought you would’ve already bought it and started reading it by now? Wasn’t my intro convincing enough?!This book will bring about all the feels. There is one part of the book where I was desperate to hug Simon. I found my emotions going from anger, sadness and outright laughter all within a few short chapters: it was an emotional rollercoaster that I was glad to ride. It also made me so thankful that I never have to relive high school ever again. I can’t even imagine having to go through high school with social media; and here I thought dial up AOL instant messenger chat rooms were brutal. You will fall in love with all the characters: I hated one tremendously, but I guess things changed in the end (just a tad)…look at me, I am growing.I also loved author Becky Albertalli‘s writing style. It was fresh and real. Are you still reading my review?! Thank you, but what the heck are you waiting for…I already told you to start reading this book! 😉

I’m totally kicking myself for waiting so long to read Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda! This was just about the cutest novel ever! When I was midway through my ebook I went out and grabbed a paperback so I could have it on my shelf. That’s how much I loved it even before I was finished! The book starts off with Simon in the closet about his sexuality and emailing back and forth with an anonymous boy from school, ‘Blue’, who was in the same boat. Simon found himself getting more and more attached to this boy without even knowing his true identity, desperately wanting to meet in real life. These interactions were everything! I love the connection they had and the support they gave each other as they worked their way around coming out to family and friends. There was even a bit of teasing and flirting going on as they tested the waters of their friendship to see if there was the potential for it to go further. I just loved the progression of their relationship from start to finish and found it just completely adorable!Simon is a breath of fresh air of a character. He wasn’t just adorable with Blue but in every other capacity as well. He gets along with others easily and genuinely wants to find the good in people and make friends. He sort of navigates a lot of life’s changes throughout the book in sometimes awkward and hilarious ways and sometimes in serious and real ways that made him that much more relatable.“But I’m tired of coming out. All I ever do is come out. I try not to change, but I keep changing, in all these tiny ways. I get a girlfriend. I have a beer. And every freaking time, I have to reintroduce myself to the universe all over again.”If Simon and Blue weren’t enough, Simon’s relationship with his family and friends also made this book everything that is was. Little family moments cracked me up like The Chipmunks, the Facebook Scavenger Hunt, and of course OREO’s! That’s the sort of family I strive for with my own kids, a close knit family that have fun together. Simon’s group of friends with all of their ups and downs (and love triangles…) were a great addition and showed the reality of what friendship can be and the art of forgiveness.Seriously, if you haven’t read this book yet, don’t be like me and wait for anything! Grab yourself a copy and introduce yourself to Simon and the rest of the amazing cast of characters. Don’t forget to grab yourself some OREO’s for when you do!

I think this is a really well written book with a good story. It is written by a child psychologist, who is writing it in a way that is relatable to teenage audiences. It is still a really entertaining, heartfelt, heart-grabbing page turner. I think the characters are realistic and never go too over the top. They are real teens that react the way real teens would to situations. Such as alcohol at parties. Not all teens are dumb and think it's cool to get drunk. Also, the way people react to someone else dating a person they like is realistically illustrated.I think the author really, accurately gets in the head of what it's like to be a teen struggling to come out as gay, and his whole experience surrounding being a gay teen. The way it feels to them when other people make insensitive jokes/remarks unknowingly in front of them. The way it feels when other people know and hold it over them. The way it feels when the anxiety won't let them be open, even to their closest friends even when they know the reaction will be positive. It was really fun to follow along with the emails Simon and "Blue" exchange...trying to guess at "Blue's" identity along with Simon. Great book. Can't wait for the movie!

The characters were pretty generic and one dimensional. I think this book only became popular because of the message they were trying to send to readers and definitely not for the writing. I mean, the message is why I picked up the book in the first place and I was really, really looking forward to it. Sadly, this book fell flat. It's not the worst book I've ever read, it was just mediocre. The author inserted information and characters that didn't need to be in the book and seems to have been haphazardly thrown in with no idea how it'd be tied into the story later. Well, it's simple, the author just doesn't bring it up again. No one will notice, right? If you're looking for inspiration on coming out, then I'd suggest asking real people on what they went through personally. The book tried to do that by having Simon and Blue "talk" through email about it but they're both new to coming out and thus have no knowledge of how to do it or how it will go. I don't think this book would be the best informative tool on that front.
