Delightful, I love his sense of humor. A bit esoteric in terms of all the Dante references as well as his circle of friends but I thoroughly enjoyed the story.
I loved this book -it's vivid portrayal of a beautiful chapel in Padua that I plan to visit! Great characters and a great lesson in art history!
Michael Downing's latest novel is a gem. It's a moving guide to one of the world's cultural treasures and a tour de force about relationships, loss, memory and humor. It's proof that a coming of age story can take place at any age. I loved this book.
Beautifully written and thoroughly satisfying. I am looking forward to my trip to Padua.
The moment Elizabeth Berman (the main character and narrator) opens her mouth (figuratively), I want to hear everything she has to say. This is, as one reviewer wrote, indeed a love story for adults, and about adults, who understand the dreadful complexities of long love, fidelity, disappointment, commitment and, thus, joy. Like BREAKFAST WITH SCOTT, the book has a charismatically zany quality; I couldn't help but think of the best of the 30's comedies, i.e., YOU CAN"T TAKE IT WITH YOU; there's a similar cast of lovable nuts and bolts who play the roles of sidekicks and teachers and witnesses to what's going on--which is a lot. So the book is truly funny, but also touching, often heartbreaking, and illuminating. And, I have toadd, if you're lucky enough to have visited Venice, Padua and the Chapel, or wise enough to want to, there's a really interesting thing going on here,because Downing serves up tons of information in the most delectable form, as part of a wonderful story about human beings falling in love--it's a wedding of Michelin and Downton Abbey, where it's one thing after another but never too much and you wish it would go on forever.
I am a huge fan of Michael Downing’s novels such as "A Narrow Time," "Breakfast with Scot," "Perfect Agreement," and "Life with Sudden Death," so I was excited to read his latest book. When I’m in the middle of a Downing story, I feel the way Elizabeth (main character and narrator in The Chapel) does about the Gardner Museum: “It’s just somewhere I’m always happy to be.†And happy I was reading "The Chapel." It is an honest and riveting story about Elizabeth’s trip to Italy following the death of her husband, Mitchell. She refers to the time after losing Mitchell as her “Afterlife.†Elizabeth’s afterlife is in Padua, and we are right there with her as she deals with the conflicts of her children, her past, and the secrets of her mind and heart. It is Giotto’s paintings in the Arena Chapel, and a cast of interesting and humorous supporting characters that help Elizabeth find herself. I love everything about "The Chapel": the fresh, original story-line, the intriguing setting, the serious yet playful characters, and the enlightening art and history woven into the tale. I highly recommend this book as I do all of Downing’s work.
Ever been on a group tour? Remember the cast of characters who shared the bus and the views with you? Then this is the novel you'll want to read. Michael Downing's "The Chapel" conjures up a group of tourists traveling together and not really together at all. Their quirks and points of view are laughably familiar. This is a fast paced read full of charming Italians, displaced travelers and an introduction to the art of Giotto. By the time you finish reading it, you'll be dreaming of a trip to Italy.
Michael Downing is a wonderful writer, and the beauty of his language and his wit are evident on every page of of his exciting new novel. We like and empathize with these characters, and eagerly turn pages to follow their journey. An added bonus is the intimate and glorious description of Giotto's gorgeous chapel--such a gift!
