It is unusual for her to complain, but the debilitating effects of heat and humidity during her 2006-7 rambles in Cuba become a minor theme in Dervla Murphy's "The Island That Dared: Journeys in Cuba." Except for the climate, Cuba is a country and a system well-matched to Dervla Murphy's political, social and economic views. And, for someone to whom 27 miles is an easy day's walk, the physicality of daily life there is also a good match. But what genre does 'The Island That Dared' fall into? Is it a travel journal? Well, yes, but with rather more than the usual amount of history and political analysis, some of it tedious. Could it be a textbook for a college class in History or Government? Well, maybe, if you excuse its informal approach to scholarship. The narrative lacks satisfying and lively character portraits of people the author encounters along the way, but the author does infuse a good sense of the terrain, weather and infrastructure of the countryside, not to mention flora and fauna. Her description of the itchy, uncomfortable results of sleeping in the open is vivid. Indeed, there are stretches of the journal that shouldn't be missed, if you're an experienced travel book reader or one who wants a sense of off-the-beaten-path Cuba. Then again, it is an unusually opinionated book with underpinnings firmly seated in the 1950s revolution led by the Castro brothers, Che Guevera and Camilo Cienfuegos, among others, and the subsequent five decade struggle to perfect and extend it despite heavy interference from the U.S. and others. There is a pervasive bias against `Capitalism Rampant' that may rub some readers the wrong way. So also may Murphy's descriptions of people, which never fail to include references to race: Mulatto, Mestizo, Creole, White, African, European, and so on. She frequently generalizes, "Cubans are this or that..." but that's a minor sin we all commit.Oddly, as I read about the ubiquitous horse-drawn conveyances, 1957 Buicks, the chronic shortage of oil, aging housing stock with intermittent utility services and sparse availability of consumer goods, I wondered whether Cuba may not actually be a leading indicator of civil society in the first half of the twenty-first century. Could this describe our future rather than our past?

Next year Dervla Murphy will be 80, and there is no indication that she'll stop hiking, biking and imbibing impossible drinks in impossible places. In short she'll continue to "tread lightly on this earth" until the day she dies. I have been an ardent admirer of Ms Murphy from the mid-60s onwards, since she wrote about her youthful bike trip to Europe and India, 'Full Tilt'.Her latest book does not disappoint. It describes in great detail not only her 3-part travels in Cuba between 2005 and 2007, the first part with daughter and grandchildren, the latter two by herself, but also Cuba's political history. She makes no bones about being a Fidelista, and then proceeds to convincingly explain why.It is a challenging read, and much painstaking research has gone into it. The University of Cuba should give her a PhD for this ... and for being the best ambassador the country could have.A small criticism: Ms Murphy has changed her publisher, from John Murray to Eland Publishing, and for the first time ever I have discovered typos in the text. Poor proofing, I guess.

The Island that Dared, Journeys in Cuba by Dervla Murphy. Murphy is an Irish grandmother who travels the world mostly by bicycle, sometimes by mule, train or by foot, and then writes fascinating books about her travels. For those wanting to learn more about Cuba, I can think of no better book about Cuba, a book untainted by US prejudice about the island. This is what I had to say in a previous post:To Cuba and Back by Richard Henry Dana, Jr. of a visit in 1859 and The Island That Dared, Journeys in Cuba by Dervla Murphy published in 2008. The US has been interested in acquiring Cuba almost from the very birth of the Republic. Spain refused to sell, and the Spanish-American War in 1898 allowed the US to acquire the island as well as other Spanish possessions including the Philippines. We occupied Cuba on and off during the early 1900s. When we weren't there as occupiers, we controlled much of the island's economy and politics remotely. Finally in 1959, Fidel Castro led a successful revolution to change the status quo. Castro visited Washington, DC, seeking assistance and was given a cold shoulder. He then turned to the Soviet Union for assistance. JFK was attempting to better relations with Castro just before his death. The US imposed an embargo on Cuba shortly after Castro came to power and maintains it still today. The embargo may have been justified when Castro was attempting to export his revolution to other countries by military force, but that is no longer the case. The vast majority of the Cuban people support their present form of government. Those who oppose it have emigrated to the US.I suggest that the embargo has passed its use-by date and should be ended. Let us re-establish diplomatic relations with Cuba and end our hostility to the Cuban experiment. They have the right to choose their form of government and economic system. If we think our way of life is better (and they think that their's is better), let us compete openly without any coercion. They and we will be better off with a free competition of ideas.

Poorly written

Her research was amazing re the modern history of this interesting island.

I found her analysis and love of Cuba detailed and inspiring. I also felt that her family part was too long and personal.

Excellent and informative in true Dervla Murphy style

Devla Murphy takes 3 trips to Cuba, one in 07, 08, and 09. She does not go to or write about any tourist spots. She visits with the people and sees the back country by hiking across miles of hills and valleys most tourists would not see. She describes everything she sees in great detail. You feel like you are a part of her journey. She is my favorite author, and I recommend all her books!
