Finally an Intranet book written in plain English with suggestions that make perfect sense. While the small pictures were a little frustrating (get out your reading glasses!), this is the only fault I find with the book. I work for a non-profit agency and I have been tasked with the challenge to design our first intranet. We have limited funds for consultants - so I have found this book (along with James Robertson's other two intranet books) invaluable.
As I read this book, I realized the value that it provided to me as it relates to the intranet at my work. We are looking at new ideas for how to build out intranet and this book is full of ideas and thoughts on what makes up a large variety of intranets. It doesn't preach to you that every intranet must have a specific set of characteristics, but rather provides examples of what modern day intranets have and why they have those features. Many of the new features are important in this day, as more and more employees are looking to interact and engage with each other, and that could be around work tasks (in the intranet) to news (in the intranet). Great book to get great ideas.
James has produced a superb book, that covers all the important points without becoming too massive a volume. I have been working with intranets since 2000 and consider myself to be a bit of a specialist and reasonable expert and I found this book to be extremely useful.Essential Intranets is well structured helping to make it an easy read. As well as splitting the book into three high level sections, each chapter has a very nice summary page at the beginning, with an "at a glance" panel, an "Intranets must" list and a list of the screen shots used.As such this book is also very useful for those out there who need to know about intranets, even if it is not 100 % their normal day job. I bet that this is not the last book written by James as each chapter could easily serve as the basis for another book.
The challenge of any Intranet is to provide a window into the world of systems for the non-system user, surfacing key tasks and enabling the end user to see, hear and do everything of importance to them and their organisation. I believe “Essential Intranets†presents ideas to inspire further integration and value-add to any organisation, thereby delivering a digital workplace that is valuable in communicating and collaborating, offering a seamless entry-point for the user.
