I am using this book for a graduate research class. I feel that the content is good, but sometimes difficult to understand, especially if this is your first encounter with Nursing Research. Fortunately, my background makes it a bit easier. All in all, I'd recommend it.

I'm sure this is a good resource for some nursing research classes, but as a required text for my nursing research class, it did not provide the information I needed to complete assignments. This is more a school issue rather than a book issue. There are other nursing research books out there that explain things in a manner which is easier for the novice nurse researcher to interpret. Because I needed to find other sources which explained things in a manner that was easier to interpret I'm giving the book three stars. It has lots of information, but if you are new to nursing research it doesn't use language which is effective at helping the learner grasp concepts easily.

Nowhere did the description disclose that this was the international edition. The picture sure didn't. Even states on the cover Not authorized for sale in US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, or Virginia Islands. I hope it is close enough to the version I assumed I was ordering to compete my class.

- The book I received is not the book pictured- it's actually the South Asian Edition, for the specific countries listed on the book's cover, & states "circulation outside this territory is strictly prohibited"

The content of book itself is great. however I would recommend buying it in vitalsource bookshelf format as I had to go back and do. It is a far better user format for a book of this size and scope. I had bought kindle books before (for macbook and iPhone) but was rather limited in my experience with them. In this book, there is no search function ("X-ray"as I just found out it was called) or page numbers to reference when they are listed in class. This really hurts the functionality of a textbook of this size. I realized this totally limits the use of a kindle in this fashion. It actually makes the book purchased quite useless. I called to to ask for a refund based on these issues, but because it was greater than 7 days, I could not obtain one. The employee said "it is assumed the entire book can be read in 7 days" so they would not issue one. I reminded her that this was a 600 page printed college textbook designed to be read over a 4 month semester and that my class started after I bought the book. Despite this, she still insisted it is assumed I read it in 7 days. Very pleasant customer service rep but the logic regarding the product they were selling and it's use lacked some common sense. sorry, last kindle textbook for me.

The content of this book was wonderful, the quality of the book, not so much. It literally fell apart. I wanted to keep this book as a reference but I will probably just throw it away. Could never resell it! I think they should replace it!

When the book arrived it is an International Edition, not authorized to be sold in the United States. I am extremely displeased. I could have bought a brand new book without this issue for $20 more. Very sad that there was no disclaimer about this product !

Got this book as a rental. It was brand new! I was very impressed by this. I barely cracked the pages for my course, so the next person getting this book it will be practically new as well.

This item is a South Asian edition which is not stated on Amazon. This item clearly states on the cover that it is illegal to circulate outside of Southeast Asia Territory. I live in the USA and last I knew Amazon was based out of the USA as well.

Great topic and an engrossing narrative! Hey, I'm an electrical engineer, so I like this kind of stuff. I appreciate the author's hard work in creating a fascinating narrative describing the early history of wireless communication.I would have given this book five stars except for a few shortcomings that I think are fixable. I shall list those here:(1) Obviously the author is not an electrical engineer. This is evident by the strange, puzzling descriptions he gives of technical concepts. For example, this head scratcher is from location 187 of the Kindle edition: "[Armstrong] built a device that made it easy for a radio transmitter to summon the invisible waves." My best guess here is that this refers to some sort of electronic oscillator, but I honestly can't tell for sure.Clear, concise, correct high-level descriptions of the various technical concepts mentioned -- descriptions that use standard terms correctly and are reasonably comprehensible to the lay public -- ARE possible. The author ought to work with a sympathetic electrical engineer to get the phrasing right.(2) The non-chronological presentation is a great way to keep the reader's interest: First, a scene with tension and conflict is presented; then (with the reader's interest piqued and before the resolution is presented) the history leading up to that scene is presented. But in the early chapters, in particular, this gets confusing at times. On a re-read, everything seems to make sense. But it would be better if things were clear the first time through, so some rewriting might be needed to effect this.(3) The book has a lot of typos and other editorial errors. These are the errors I noted in today's reading session as I finished the book (Kindle edition):Location 1938: "[And] endless parade of witnesses followed ..." -> "[An] endless ..."Location 2172: "... which could [only] afford to produce only low-budget dreck" -> "... which could afford to produce only ..."Location 2594: "... what could have been [in] the two friends had remained allies." -> "... what could have been [if] the two friends had remained allies."Location 2847: "Johnson had assembled what the [the] New York Times described ..." -> "Johnson had assembled what the New York Times described ..."Location 3275: "With AT&T [was] focused on MCI’s antitrust lawsuit, ..." -> "With AT&T focused on MCI’s antitrust lawsuit, ..."Location 3370: "... began challenge the web of expensive telegraph cables ..." -> "... began [to] challenge the web of expensive telegraph cables ..."There were a lot of errors before location 1938, too. I had observed them in earlier reading sessions, but neglected to note them.The author's discovery of Sarnoff's 1965 speech is a wonderful contribution to the history of technology. I was interested in seeing the original transcript of Sarnoff's speech, but had no luck locating it via Google. The author refers the reader to his evolving web site, battlefortheairwaves.com, for source materials, but neither that speech nor much of anything else was at that site.

I noticed this book because I remember reading Scott Woolley when he was a business technology reporter at Forbes. Boy I am glad I did! Woolley has created a page turner that brings to life the story of this modern communications age. I couldn't put it down. In an age when government seems to have their hand in everything, Woolley's tale is an important read if we are to understand how innovation is to prosper going forward. I recommend this book highly!

This highly readable book is an engaging history of the birth of modern communications, from Marconi wireless to the dawn of the digital age. The central figure is David Sarnoff, the founder of RCA, who originally worked for Marconi and, in what amounted to a farewell address, predicted the onset of the digital age in which we now live.I have one quarrel with is book, and it's an important one. More than half of it deals with the troubled relationship between Sarnoff and inventor Edwin Armstrong, who developed the first amplifier and, ultimately FM radio. Throughout this narrative, the author leads us to believe that Sarnoff undermined Armstrong's FM invention -- a belief Armstrong held that led to his suicide. But in the end, no evidence is presented, and every indication is that Sarnoff did nothing of the sort.With this major objection aside, this book is an important contribution to the history of modern communications, not the least for the revelations about Sarnoff's vision of the digital future, decades before it came to fruition. Sarnoff was a true visionary, seeing what others could not.

Empire of the Air told the story of DeForest, Armstrong and Sarnoff and left the impression that Sarnoff was a Machiavellian creep. This book paints a somewhat different picture and returns at least a degree of humanity to Sarnoff's legacy.And what a legacy it is. Sarnoff did not single-handedly build RCA, NBC, etc. but he was single minded in his promotion of the airwaves as a means of broadcasting both sounds and images, not to mention two-way communications, which he helped revolutionize. He even had a remarkably prescient vision of what became the Internet, way back in 1966.The book is well written and beautifully paced.

Those dreams became his goals and, from telegraph totelevision, he was able to work with engineers, scientists andbusinessmen to set the intermediate goals, identify the leading-edgeinventions and inventors who were most likely to succeed, put themall together and then sell it to the world. There are myriadbig, big names to honor in this interesting story where Sarnoffplayed one of the leading roles.

Excellent preparation for early readingThe skill of sounding out words is critical to learning to read and write. This skill is not as easy to learn as many adults think. One needs to be able to recognize the sound value of letters instantly, and be able to blend those sounds to put together words, or for writing, to decompose the spoken words into sounds and letters. Used according to the instructions, this book provides an excellent primer for those skills, and thus an excellent introduction to word reading.Before starting this book, the child should be familiar with the lowercase alphabet and with the sounds - not just the names - associated with the letters. It is okay if letter recognition still requires a second or two of thought or is not always accurate, as the practice in this book will help make that recognition fluent. Children who are not familiar with the alphabet may wish to start with the preceding book in the Kumon preschool English series, My First Book of Lowercase Letters, or with the book before that, My First Book Of Uppercase Letters (Kumon Workbooks).To make the learning process as easy as possible, the words in this Rhyming Words book are composed of a single leading consonant with its most common sound, followed by a short vowel, followed finally by a single final consonant with its most common sound. Because the spellings of all the words in the book are regular, the student does not get confused with different sounds for the same letter or different letters for the same sound.The book uses 52 three letter words. These words use all five of the short vowels, and use fifteen of the most common consonants. The letters j, k, and y are excluded, likely because of potential confusion with uses of g, c, and i for some of the same sounds, and q, v, and x are excluded likely because of rarity of occurrence in three letter words.After a review of the alphabet, the words are presented in groups of four, with each group of four words rhyming so that the child can focus on formation of different words by varying only the initial letter of the word. For each group of four words, there are four workbook pages: first a page that introduces the four words using associated pictures; then a page where the four pictures and associated words are presented in random order to be recited, three times; then a page where each of the four words in the group are traced, three times, with progressively lighter tracing guides; and finally a page where each of the four words in the group are traced twice with even lighter tracing guides and then written once without a tracing guide.On each page where a word is written, the word is spoken once, then the sounds of the individual letters are made as each letter is written. This reinforces the relationship between the sound of each letter and its corresponding shape in a way that highlights how words can be broken down into those individual sounds.There are at least two groups of four words for each short vowel. After all the words for a short vowel have been covered, there is a pair of review pages for each two groups of words. On the first review page of the pair, each of the two groups of four rhyming words is presented with associated pictures, in an order to be recited. On the second review page, each of the eight words is written once. As before, the word is recited before it is written, and the sound of each letter is made each time that letter is written.At the end of the book are a series of additional review pages, again with each pair of review pages covering two groups of four words each. The first page of the pair requires the child to trace his way through a grid of words by following the path made by one group of rhyming words and ignoring words from the second group. On the second page, each of the eight words from the two groups is written once after reciting the word, again with each letter sound made as the letter is written.The specific pages of the book are as follows:First, two pages reviewing the alphabet. On each of these pages, the child traces all the letters of the alphabet, in lowercase, in order. On the first page, there is a strong tracing guide; on the second page, there is a barely visible tracing guide.Then, four groups of four rhyming words each are presented, all with "a" as the vowel, for a total of 16 pages. There are then 4 pages of review for these words.Then, two groups of four rhyming words each are presented, both with "e" as the vowel, for a total of 8 pages, followed by 2 pages of review.Then, three groups of four rhyming words each are presented, all with "i" as the vowel, for a total of 12 pages, followed by 4 pages of review. The words ending in "ig" - "pig", "wig", "dig", "big" - appear in both pairs of review pages.Then, two groups of four rhyming words each are presented, both with "o" as the vowel, for a total of 8 pages, followed by 2 pages of review.Then we get to the "u" words, again with two groups of four rhyming words each being presented, for a total of 8 pages plus 2 review pages.Finally, 12 additional review pages cover all groups of four rhyming words presented - except for the words ending in "ig", which having already appeared in two pairs of review pages.In total, each of the 52 words presented is written 8 times and spoken a similar number of times, for a total of 416 written word repetitions and 1248 written letter repetitions, over the course of 80 workbook pages.I first used this book with my older son, when he was 5. I sat by him when he worked on the book, to encourage him, help him figure out words where the picture was ambiguous, and to make sure he followed the instructions by sounding out the words and letters as he wrote them. By the end of the book, his association of letters with sounds was reliable, he understood how the sounds fit together to make up a word, and he was starting to be able to identify words from the letters, and not just from the pictures. He did need additional practice, which was provided by the subsequent book in the series, My Book Of Rhyming Words And Phrases (Kumon Workbooks); after going through that book, he could sound out and identify three letter words reliably. Now, at 6, he can read simple texts and sound out most words.I later used this book with my younger son starting when he was 3 year 7 months and finishing shortly after his fourth birthday, with similar results. He is now about half way through the subsequent book and is likely to be able to reach simple texts by the time he starts school at age 5.As with all Kumon workbooks, this book is self paced, with a gentle progression. The progression in this book may seem minimal, but in the context of the Kumon preschool English workbook sequence, there is a strong, thorough progression, starting with hand eye coordination skills, then with letter formation and sounding, then with the word sounding in this and the following workbook, and finally progressing through more complex words, phrases, and sentences, ultimately to a child who is ready to read and write.

Research shows that if a child has trouble rhyming then they will have trouble reading. Therefore, I bought this book to prepare my son with rhyming. I am familiar with all the Kumon books so I wanted to try the Kumon method first. This book not only helps with rhyming, but it helps your child learn how to read and spell. Example are words ending in at : cat, hat, rat. Then an: fan, man, ran, etc.. I practiced each lesson of words using movable alphabets. I did this for about two days then the third day I allowed my son to practice in the book. He is five years old and capable of writing letters. After reviewing. Within a week my son was able to spell the words verbally and write them. This is definitely a must buy if you are starting to teach your child to read.

The books get successively more difficult as they build upon skills learned from the previous pages, so that by the end of the book the child has a sense of accomplishment and be ready to move on to the next level. Then it has you trace, say, and then write the words to get a multi-sensory approach to learning them. It goes through each of the vowels, and also addresses the different pronunciations of the "y".Here is a list of the words included:"A" - cane, mane, lane, plane, hay, bay, day, play, rain, pain, brain, train"E" - bee, see, tree, knee, feet, meet, sheet, street, meat, seat, heat, neat"I" - hide, ride, wide, slide, bite, kite, white, write, cry, fly, sky, fry"O" - bone, cone, phone, stone, boat, coat, goat, float, hose, nose, rose, close"U" - tune, dune, cube, tube, cute, flute, glue, blue At the end of each set of vowel words, it has a few review pages of activities, that include writing the words, mazes and putting them in a sentence. I highly recommended this workbook for learning about long vowels, rhyming and even writing skills!

My sons love it! They actually wanted to do more! Thank you for taking the guess work out of summer education! I am just copying them on my scanner and letting them go write on that instead of the books.The books are very high quality and delivery was quick and painless!

I really like this book. I have been finding something to teach my four year old phonics. This books has variety of them and it made it fun to learn and write. I wish there are more activities but it will do.

This is one of the better books I have for my child. She really enjoys this one. She's not quite 4 yet so she may be a bit more advanced than some kids. I'd suggest any child attending a teaching daycare look at age 3 for starting this book. Good book overall.

The premise was good but these two were kinda ridiculous. I mean....really, Eddie? Not once, but twice. He literally became hypnotized. How could it be that easy for him? And his family? Wow?And Sandra. She was a dang fool. Just immature. I mean, this could have been so good, but I spent half the book angry. Get it if you want to, but don't say I didn't warn you.I was passed at both of them.Maybe this all means the author did a good job, but if I'd known what the hero and heroine were going to do at the first sign of trouble, old loves, and new interests, I would have passed.

This was a good read. At times I felt as if Eddie was weak and placed himself in situations that he should've handled better. Sandra was a good person to forgive so easily. It's sad to know that there are so many interracial relationships out there and families continue to be so jaded to progress. Love not hate.

This was a very interesting story. I really liked the realism of the story. The families reaction to the couple expresses some of the feelings that are hidden. You wouldn't think those emotions exist, but they still do. This is a different take on interracial romance. It is usually black and white or black and Asian. Great read.

I loved reading this book. I only wish there was more. The book had strong female characters and a couple of betrayals you would not think to expect.

I could have done without the cheating, took away a full star. They were an otherwise cute couple. Still very young and immature though. Writing was ...good

I was very impressed with this new-to-me author. Loved the book; kept me up late at night (reading in the dark under a black pashmina so as not to awaken my dearest Hubs) is a wonderful way to relax and learn. There are wonderful characters, a strong story line and goodness triumphs over evil....and I loved that it was set in mid-evil parts of Germany; i have very good memories from Germany and it was a good way to revisit those memories as well. I hope to find more of this authors works. I was stunned that there were negative reviews, but dear author do not take it seriously, they know not what they read. Your book is well written, your translator did a great job and I found the book to be wonderful. And I have read everything I can get my hands on for 60+ years. I loved your book!

At the outset, Madlen is a 15-year-old girl living in Heidelberg occasionally assisting a midwife and healer with births and herbal remedies. Her father Jerg does not appreciate her absences from the housework. Following the midwife’s untimely death, and responding to her own wish to be helpful to suffering folk in her city, Madlen predictably falls afoul of the evil nature of an ambitious local nobleman. The story and the characters, though not fully rounded out, are engaging from the first pages onward, and we find ourselves alternately rejoicing at Madlen’s good fortune and then despairing with her as fortune’s fickleness turns her joy inside out. The plot passes from crisis to bliss to crisis, sometimes rather swiftly. The prose in translation is adequate, but laden with anachronistic expressions, and the point of view of the narrative occasionally shifts two or three times on a single page.

The writing leaves much to be desired (or perhaps the translation leaves much to be desired...either way), and there are very obvious historical inaccuracies despite being a historical fiction novel. Lacks authentic dialogue and consistent perspective.

The Secret Healer is an historical fiction that takes place in the latter part of the 14th century. It is the gripping tale of a young woman accused of crimes she did not commit. As a girl Madlen learned about the healing properties of herbs from the local midwife and worked as her assistant. When the midwife dies women turn to her. The wife of an abusive Lord miscarries but Madlen saves her life.The story is a poignant look at the hardships a woman of no social standing during the middle ages had to endure when falsely accused. The characters come alive in this story. As the reader my heart was filled with compassion for the protagonist and disgust and hatred for the antagonist. I didn't want to put the book down. The pace was perfect and the plot was well developed. I am not a good judge of the accuracy of social norms of that age but the entire story and all the characters was quite believable. An excellently written tale. There is only one sex scene and it is very mild without explicit detail. Definitely a five star read.

My first complaint with this book was that the ladies chose to go into the forest to burn their herbs. They did have a fire place in their hut. Why go into the woods where the local sheriff caught them, accused them and then accidentally killed one of them. Questionable action right off the bat. Then poor writing. The first rule of good writing is "show don't tell" This author constantly told me the character was afraid, worried, sad. Better to describe the characters actions and let me draw my own conclusions. But my biggest complaint was language inconsistent to the time of the story. When a shop keeper says of a guilty man, "Nail the B**tard" I question if they even had nails in the middle ages and would someone use such 20th century slang? Or the line,'She thought the trial would be a breeze." Really? Again, 20th century slang. I couldn't keep with it. A good idea for a story but this author needs to brush up on some basic rules of good writing. I am surprised that Amazon Kindle chose this for the April advancereading selection. I am glad the book was free. I feel like I wasted my April selection on this one.

I loved this reading by the author Ellin Carsta. The Secret Healer is book 1 a series of 2. As I read this book, it was a constant reminder of how women were viewed as witches and evil. Who would have thought that using herbs to heal people from various ailments would cause there to be a witch hunt. This book was a reminder of how women were persecuted without proof and or fabricated lies in the Middle Ages and even now although it is not as rampant. It seems that women have had to fight just to stay alive in a world that was a dominated by men and many ways it is.The author did a great job weaving this story together and also giving good character depth in various character that was introduced throughout this book.If you are reading this book in Kindle format then this quote is located on on 4226 (page 310 for hard copy) :"even thought I'm still young, I have the feeling I've seen it all. I've experienced generosity and warmth as much as as I've known hate and lies. I've found true love and lost it again."This was one of my favorite quotes throughout the book as it highlights Madlen, who is the main character in the book who is being sought for murder of a woman whose husband is a nobleman. Throughout Madlen's journey she tries to suppresses her gift but can't seem to bring herself to do so because she has a God given gift to select herbs to bring healing to people.In the process of secretly healing people, she is on on the run from the nobleman who wants nothing more to bring her to justice on some trumped her charges. Even though she was in hiding she met great people along the way who helped her out. Despite the turbulence that she face, she was also aware of the good that lies out there within people.It was a great read that has adventure, joy and suspense all wrapped in one.I look forward to reading book 2 in the series.
