Had to read this book when I found out it existed. Why? Because I met him and shook his hand in the early 60's when my Public School Asst. Principal brought him to my classroom in the South Bronx. Seems he was his son-in-law and his daughter's husband at the time. The names used in the book don't match my memory but the sexual magnetism was there just from the handshake if memory serves and IT WAS A LONG TIME AGO!Yeah, Joe had a tough life but many of us did in those days )we're practically the same age. However we didn't do the s*** that Joe did or behave the way he did. And I mean the kids I grew up with and who succeeded amazingly in the Bronx... Low class Sicilian Italian is what I am getting from all of this. It's 50+ years later and I am in a south Florida community with a retired branch of these folks...they haven't changed - just got older...sadly! When I got past the pages where 'Joe'( because I am convinced this was ghost written,) talked about the abuse of and his lousy behavior he exhibited towards this first wife= I just lost interest and skimmed quickly ! Too many F words and 'WOE IS ME' in there for it to have any intrinsic value really!

I found this book about the ups and downs of Joe Pepitone to be very interesting. His Italian upbringing was informative and somewhat par for the times (50's). The stories of his youth appeared to be honest and straightforward. His like/dislike for his Dad seemed blended.His rise to become a regular at 1st Base to replace "Moose" Skowron brought back fond memories of great Yankee Teams. Playing with the likes of Mantle, Berra, Ford, and Maris must have been amazing for a youthful "Pepi". The infield of Pepitone, Richardson, Kubek, and Boyer was both great defensively as well as offensively. Clearly one of the best of the times.To be placed smack dab in the middle of such fame at such a young age had to place enormous pressures on him. As the Yankee Dynasty came apart beginning in 1965 must have wrecked havoc with him emotionally.As a longtime NY Yankee Fan, one can only wonder what a Joe Pepitone who focused 100 percent on baseball could have become. I guess we will never realize how good he could have been.In closing, a good book that leaves you asking what If----?

Definitely a no holds barred account of Pepi's personal and professional life. Does take some accountability for his actions but seems to be more of a pain in the butt than ahything else especially early in his career. Tried very hard to be a non conforming character and pulls it off. Therefore, it is hard to feel real sorry for him. Would make a good movie. Seems to go out of his way to make things difficult for both himself and everyone else.The story of Dick Allen writing S-H-I-*; in the dirt is simply not true. He did write other things..I read this when it origianlly came out and forgot crazy he was. Birthday cakes will never be the same. Thanks Doug Rader.For a book to be reprointed this many years later tells you it is worth the read.

The book was interesting in that it explained how one very talented ballplayer self-destructed, wasted a promising career and hurt many lives along the way. The book was written at a very elementary level, but did keep my attention throughout.All I can say after completing the novel is,...... "What a shame."

Having grown up in this era and not exactly being a Yankee lover I still enjoyed baseball in all forms.I never knew there was this seedy side to Joe Pepitone that carried right into his later years.A good book to read whether a Yankee fan or not.Things have not changed in the sports world through the years as we see other talents of today being wasted.Joe was a perfect example of wasted talent.

I had read this book many years ago but lost the copy. When I came across this one I had to buy it and reread it. It is an irreverant look into the life of one of the most flamboyant NY Yankees. At times it is a hysterically funny book.

If you are looking for a book mainly about baseball buy something else. I have found that this book mostly deals with the sexual escapades of Pepitone. I woudn't recommend it for a true baseball fan.

This is a very good book. I've always been a fan of Joe Pepitone, still am.

Overall, these are very good lectures. The first few lectures are a little dry. I got the impression that there was not a lot of good background material to utilize for these be getting lectures, but they were included anyway with perhaps more attempt at depth than was needed. As the series progressed, they consistently got better. The professor does do a great job throughout the lectures of showing the Chinese mindset of what imperial power and responsibility meant.

Professor Kenneth J. Hammond from New Mexico State makes this 5,000 year history of China come alive.It helped me to begin to understand the difference in cultures between the western world and the east. It also helped me to see that because I was brought up in a democracy/republic that all nations may not want that kind of government.I was surprised to learn that under Communism women had more rights than they had previously and as capitalism grabs hold of China, women’s rights are disappearing. I also found it interesting to learn why the students were protesting in Tiananmen Square and the eventual outcome of that protest.I also found intriguing the family dynasties that ruled China over the years and the Mongols taking control under the Khans when Marco Polo visited. I was disgusted to find Great Britain as the biggest drug cartel in history and how they pushed opium on the Chinese people in order to have an advantage in trading in silver with them.In America we learn little of Chinese history and these classes are about thirty minutes in length which is perfect for a little at a time. This took me a long time to finish but I feel I have a better understanding of the Chinese people and history thanks to Prof. Hammond.

I was not put off by this professor's delivery, as some were, and I know so little about early Chinese history that I can't comment on the content of the earlier lectures. However, his discussion of the Great Leap Forward and the cultural revolution simply appalled me. He did not criticize Mao 's judgement in either of these tragedies. I understand wanting to avoid the knee-jerk demonization of Mao that is characteristic of some accounts, but these lectures are simply a whitewash of reality. Collectivization wasn't a bad idea, it's just that bureaucrats overstated their harvest figures and they had some bad weather. I don't doubt that was part of the problem, but nothing was said about the disastrous projects (like making useless steel) that took manpower and resources away from agriculture when it was most needed, or the emphasis on political correctness over actual knowledge that led to collapsed buildings and dam failure. Even worse, the professor says nothing about the torture and murder during the cultural revolution, or the generation of brainwashed youths who Mao encouraged to perpetrate these horrors, and later banished to the countryside when they got too far out of his control. If I were a student at his university I would be picketing outside this professor's classroom. Shame on The Teaching Company for choosing to hire this man to lecture on such an important topic.

As far as the great courses go, I thought no this is me is pretty good. It's a massive endeavor to cover 5000 years of history in the same amount of time that most cover a few centuries. Full marks for providing a comprehensive yet necessarily cursory review of Chinese civilization. I am not a student of Chinese history/politics or culture but I found this course to be very approachable considering the subject matter. To address some of the criticisms left by other reviewers, I think most of them are unfair. The man is not Abraham Lincoln. He is not the great orator. However I found his lectures to be on par with many academics I have taken courses from either in person or listened to in similar formats. There was no damning confrontation of Mao's legacy. But I, in no way, felt there was any kind of tacit endorsement or excusal for the fact that Mao was a murderous psychopath. I was shocked to read that critique. His pronunciation is probably bad. I have no idea. Though this does seem to be an odd trend I have found from at least 3 other great course lecturers in areas where I was familiar with the subject language. As a fan of linguistics, this is rather irkesome.

Hammond's summary of Chinese history is useful, if a little dry. Yes, his pronunciation of Chinese is poor, but that is unimportant for most listeners. Having said that, he runs into real trouble in explaining two epic disasters: the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. He seems to think that Mao had the right idea and that these failures were the work of subordinates. Nothing could be farther from the truth. If people lied to the Chairman, it was because he refused to accept anything but lies. Mao was a monster and Hammond makes a huge mistake by trying to rescue his reputation.

Frugality, simplicity and a strong faith are qualities I identified with growing up Mennonite in Lancaster County, PA during the 1950s. Linda Maendel has painted in bold colors a realistic picture of life in a similar culture, her Hutterite colony in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Mennonites and Hutterites both have Anabaptist origins in Europe, value close family ties, and oppose war.Using blog posts, newspaper articles, and historical research, Maendel recalls the hard work and strong sense of community that keeps the Elm River Colony thriving. Before reading this book, I had only a vague idea of Hutterite life. However, I learned that cooperation makes their world go round, basing this belief on the New Testament teaching in Acts 2:40-47. While the colony members do not have personal bank accounts, colony leaders distribute funds to individual families and pay all Canadian government taxes. They are skilled at re-purposing too. The author’s stories of fashioning an old desk into something new and creating lap quilts from patches are heart-warming.Reading Linda’s memoir felt calming. As Valerie Weaver-Zercher mentions in her book Thrill of the Chaste, readers are drawn to stories like these because of the moral innocence exemplified, “chaste residents in a defiled world,” as she puts it. I found it interesting that my friend Weaver-Zercher was Maendel’s editor during book publication.Maendel is a consummate storyteller, a quality students in her German and English classes must relish. Through wit, humor, and an authentic voice, Linda Maendel is giving her Hutterite community a legacy to savor and to those yet to come a roadmap to follow

I had been looking forward to the publishing of this book since I knew about it from reading Linda's blog, and it does not disappoint. I think it very well succeeds in accomplishing the author's intention of sharing a picture of Hutterite life as it is lived in the early 2000s. Linda has a very flowing conversational style that gives the reader a feeling of being with her and hearing all these things first hand. I like the topics she chose to share very much. Linda writes about history, but also about the day to day life on a Hutterite colony, and special things that happen. It is clear that there is a strong bond among these people but also clear that they are very human, perhaps especially the children. Well done!

Until I was led to Linda’s Book all I’d read on the Hutterites was pretty dated. The Hutterites culture is quietly but assuredly in flux. It is with great pleasure that I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in learning about these truly amazing people. We non-Hutterites have much to learn from them and how they mediate change.

Wow, the print on this thing is so tiny you'd need magnifying glasses! Pretty much a waste of money, sad to say. Nice idea.

I bought this map for my trip recently to Washigton D.C.I wanted to visit some of the Museums.This map is great. It shows the location of many of the museums and historical sites---thus making navigation much easier.All the areas around the Smithsonian...Arlington Cemetery, Washington Mounument and the areas downtown around the near by hotels are shown...as are Metro Stops.I do highly recommend this map to all travelers to the sites in D.C.

This is a very handy laminated pocket guide to museums and attractions in DC. We used it for reference when presenting options to friends from out of town - it gives an overview of things to do plus how far apart they are from each other and from the Metro. I hope they continue to update this map.

This is, in my opinion, an important book that takes the reader deep into Iranian culture and history in relation to women's rights, shining a revealing light on the struggle by brave women (vieled or not) to gain equal rights.Reading this book, I learned s great deal about the Islamic Revolution and I gained new respect for both sides in this struggle: whether women in Iran wear the chador or not, they want to remove the gender bias from Sharia laws so that Islamic culture can benefit from the gifts and talents of both men and women.This book was a joy to read. I highly recommend it.

Grace is the word that comes to mind, when I think of my experience of reading the Jewels of Allah! This is an elegantly written book for every woman and every man to read! Dr. Nina Ansary is a brilliant author of a rare "jewel", on history of amazing Iranian women that has never been revealed before! Dr. Ansary is a catalyst whose tremendous research has created a masterpiece, greatly documented, brave work that must be a part of high school and university curriculum everywhere.Her boundless generosity:100% of the proceeds of this book is donated to charities supporting women in Iran.

Well written but not so academic that a "lay person" gets lost in the language of academia. Even a non scholar can follow the author. I enjoyed reading Jewels of Allah from start to finish.

Amazing book.

I am not a professional at anything. My opinion comes from my heart. I pray Dr. Ansary has many more books to write. I believe we need to have more of the kind of work she has done in Jewels of Allah. I had to take my time reading so as to take in every aspect of the women of Iran and the triumphs of their spirit. God Bless you Dr. Ansary. I pray your voice is heard for many years. Thank you also for the gift of my autographed book.

Well written easy reading and informative still reading when my family hasn't borrowed to read and look through. I'm very much enjoying this book & it's well worth having. I think it would be a good book in school libraries for its historical content.

Excellent analysis of Irani modern history.

I found her book compelling. She writes to educate those uninformed of the magnitude of problem in a society we judge yet know nothing about. I realize as a writer about the same subject I may be prejudiced. For those interesting in learning this is a good book.
