Men are experts about the Buddy System. Geoffrey Greif spoke at length and hopefully women will read it and learn from it. Women need to have exploration of female friendships as well as finding ways to become safer by spending time with trustworthy people. I am learning about men and women in this book. He does analyze women's friendships as well. This is not a typical book on friendship.

Largely about how to classify friendships and comparing mens friendships to womens friendships, usually in a traditional relationship. This isn't a "complete" book on friendship. It kept to a narrow focus which at times got repetitive. An interesting and easy read.

My husband received a copy of Buddy System, Understanding Male Friendships, from one of his long-time friends, and he found it to be such an accurate assessment of his past, present, and still evolving male friendships that he encouraged me to read it too. Since my husband and I have known each other for more than several decades, it was easy for me to see why this book meant so much to him. Not only could we identify, discuss, and analyze the key male players in his life (and therefore in our life together), but looking into Dr. Greif's descriptions of the friendships which will emerge in the decades yet to come gave us plenty to talk about together. Buddy System is a very engaging and insightful book that both my husband and I enjoyed very much.

The fifth edition I received in January 2016 still contained references to ICD-9-CM which was replaced by ICD-10-CM in October 2015. It proved to be relatively useless as a training tool for future CPC Certification Exams. I expected better with the AAPC logo. ICD-10-CM is needed now.The topical organization and explanations remain helpful. I would have loved it last year.Jim Cummings, AAPC member

Do not get this book!!! It is not going to help you with all the new updates. It has the codes for ICD 9, which was discounted last year.

The simple, brief words focus on Mozart's childhood. Inset scenes, some cleverly tucked into the folds of handheld fans, show the prodigy performing for Europe's great courts. Young children may not have the context to understand some spreads, particularly the clever illustrations for musical terminology. An appended glossary of those terms would have helped (an accompanying CD would have been even better). What children will connect with most are scenes of Mozart's father (pictured as an authoritarian black silhouette) juxtaposed with full spreads of Mozart's glorious musical daydreams of dancing instruments and animals, which may remind children of their own playful, imagined worlds. A final one-page biography adds more background. Along with Loriot's retelling of Peter and the Wolf (1986), this is an excellent title to introduce classical music and the stories it can tell. My two year old loves Peter Sis. He has many of his books. I also enjoy his illustrations. They are a bit unusual and beautiful.

Excellent illustrations. Makes Mozart easy for young children to relate to.

Beautifully illustrated with simple information about Mozart's early performance life. Easy for pre-schoolers to understand and appreciate. Sure to inspire budding appreciation of classical music.

The excellence of Peter SIs' illustrations is evident even from the frontispiece (that page before the title page). The line drawings of diverse musical instruments against dappled watercolor backgrounds, are simple, elegant, and completely caught my eye. The rest of the book fulfills this initial promise, as Sis displays a dazzling variety of technique and style: Close-ups and silhouettes, various backgrounds for the text (faux parchment paper, musical scores, patterned paper), watermarks and age spots, and period drawings of European capitals--like the ones you see on old Porcelain teacups and plates. The pictures consistently amaze. Unfortunately, Sis' kid bio of Mozart takes the easy way out after an imaginative beginning.Mozart was a" famous composer and a child genius. His father turned him into a child sensation." Yet, as the story progresses, it becomes clear that his father's hand is on the tyrannical side. More on that later... Mozart plays for "kings and princes and dukes." Sis dispalys these royal appearnces as decorations on six ornate fans (with fan-holding courtiers placing the fans in historical context). Moreover, Mozart was apparently the Jimi Hendrix of his era, playing blindfolded, backwards, with covered keys, and while standing on furniture (there's no mention of whether he played with his teeth or burned his pianos).This light tone shifts abruptly, however, as the silhouetted figure of his stern father points a commanding finger at him, We learn of Mozart's dilemma: "...Mozart did not play with other children, because his father made him practice all the time." We view young Mozart from above, as we hear the commands from Dad: "Play, Mozart, Play!" Mozart escapes into his music amid this fevered atmosphere, and things in the piano room morph into animated, slightly bizarre objects with faces: An airborne clock, a melting candlestick, winged potatoes, a whale spouting notes from his blow hole. The slightly bizarre "Alice in Wonderland" like images are even larger on the next 2-page spread, commanding an entire stage, with Mozart playing a flute (no doubt a reference to his Opera, "The Magic Flute"). In the only reference to his father's regimen, Sis has him asking, "Wolfgang, are you playing," and Mozart scampers back to his piano, looking like he's been caught with his hands in the cookie jar, not on the keyboard. The objects in the room return to normal, and they're in an austere black and white. They appear defeated.This is where Sis lets us down. He could have continued the father/son conflict, the battle between ambition and playing for fun and emotional release. This theme was explored in the great "The 5,000 FIngers of Dr. T.," the film that revealed the double-edged sword of striving for musical perfection. However, having led us to this point, Sis abandons it, showing us only that Mozart continued to play day and night, in his imagination, in his dreams, and throughout his life. In the biggest betrayal, the last scene shows Mozart's dad lifting the smiling young Mozart above him, as the story applauds his "beautiful music." This rendering of the father is almost repulsive.Sure it's a kids' book, and we shouldn't expect the dark revelations of either "Amadeus" or "Mommie Dearest." Still, it's clear that something is wrong here (in fact, Mr. Sis leads us right up to that idea): Herr Mozart's demands, the lack of friends, the inward escape (albeit, beautiful captured), and the book plays it safe. The pictures remain brilliant, but it's unfortunate that we have a sanitized, fairly bland conclusion, rather than further play with the discordant side of ambition. 'Dr. T' showed that this complexity could be achieved in an intelligent mix of comedy and mock horror. Still, an excellent book that can be enjoyed (on very different levels) by toddlers and those in the first few grades of elementary school.

Play, Mozart, Play! by Peter Sís is a new book that I found at our local library! My young son was enchanted by the lovely illustrations. It is a simple story and a great way to introduce classical music composers to young children. Here is a description of the book from Goodreads: "Acclaimed artist Peter Sis introduces very young children to the child genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in this picture book tribute to the beauty of listening, looking, imagining, and -- most of all -- playing." (I'm asking grandma to consider it for a birthday gift, along with a Mozart CD!)

The title of this book and the cover are incredibly inviting. We checked it out at the library because my 3-year-old loves the piano. We both found the content and the illustrations, well, boring. That Mozart's dad was a tyrant about the piano is not something I even want to share with my daughter at this point. I want to draw her into music, not give examples of abusive parenting related to music. It's a strange angle for a kid's book. Much of Mozart's music is very child-like and approachable. Too bad the qualities of the music didn't get more 'play' than the production of it.

Poor Mozart comes through as a child who plays music but longs to PLAY play. Peter Sis, as always, does a wonderful job with the text and the illustrations.Although the cover looks geared to very young children, I would caution parents that little listeners probably won't get much out of the book. PREFACEEarly hiking companions called him “Griz,” and Robert L. Wood wrote letters on personalized stationery featuring a growling bear emerging from its cave. On my earliest spring hikes with him, the preeminent Olympic Mountain historian and guidebook author complained about his “hibernation belly”—which rapidly disappeared as vernal outings turned to serious summer backpacks. Wood wrote Trail Country: The Olympic Mountains and The Olympic Mountains Trail Guide, which I think are the nation’s most lyric and authoritative books about wilderness pathways. He was as much a poet as a guidebook author. I first met him on the trail in 1974, in the middle of the Olympic Mountains he loved so much. He was leading a group of hikers to the Bailey Range, and I was scrambling from Appleton Pass to High Divide on a one-day marathon trek from Sol Duc Hot Springs. When we passed on the trail, I stopped him and mentioned I was a big fan. We exchanged addresses, and my first hike with him took us to Mount St. Helens, where Wood interviewed an early Lake Cushman pioneer for his book Men, Mules, and Mountains. He was delighted to share his love and knowledge of the mountains at our sunset doorstep. Every year, he guided groups on his traditional climb of Mount Olympus, the summit of the Olympic Peninsula. Wood literally hauled me, a shameless acrophobe, by the hand up the East Peak of that mountain. He knew the Olympics better than anyone: on one of his 28 Olympus pre-GPS outings, we found ourselves in the middle of the Blue Glacier in a whiteout. You couldn’t see from one end to the other of the 150-foot rope that connected three climbers. Nobody had the slightest idea where we were, except Bob Wood, who stopped in the middle of the ice and snow and white nothingness, turned left and without hesitation, led us directly to camp. How did he know when to turn, I asked? “I count steps,” he replied. He knew how many paces to take from Glacier Pass before he had to turn to Cal Tech Camp; he’d done it so many times before. In years that followed, Wood took me and others to places in the Olympics few people ever go. In researching one of his six books, he retraced the route of the first white man to hike from the source of the Queets River to the Pacific Ocean. Wood was the only person I know who left footprints on the Hubert and White Glaciers, two of Olympus’s most remote ice fields. He died in 2003 from complications resulting from Parkinson’s Disease, diagnosed 13 years earlier. His close friend Kent Heathershaw—who first scaled Olympus with Bob in 1961—scattered the author’s ashes from the summit of Olympus the following year. I followed Bob Wood’s old Danner tracks on and off Olympic trails for nearly a decade, learning his favorite places and scrambling up his favorite peaks. He was my mentor, and I owe him a debt of Olympic hiking, history, and trail knowledge I can never repay. It is my abiding hope that his spirit leads you, as he led me, on the trails outlined in this book.

Excellent hiking book. I'm heading out there Sept 2018 and have more than enough hikes to keep me busy. The book provides a lot of good information and I enjoy his humor!

This edition (3rd) is smaller than the 2nd edition. Too small in my opinion. Text font and maps were too small to see. I sent it back and bought a used 2nd edition which I really like. Buy the 2nd edition.

Prepping for a trip in the summer - plenty of info for it in here, and I like his sense of humor

Lots of good hikes here, able to get off the beaten path. Beautiful area!

We have looked all over for this book! Found it of course on Amazon! I bought it for a gift for my SIL that enjoys hiking. It was a great present for him while he had some down time. This book is easy to use, with clear directions, detailed trail notes, and color photos. It was a great addition to our Olympic Peninsula trip last fall!

We used this book for my homeschooling daughter. It's ok, but had I known how thin it was, I would've probably chosen a different book. It covers most of the 5th grade, but doesn't give enough practice lessons. I had to supplement this workbook with worksheets I was able to find over the internet.It does have some common core stuff in it, but we just ignored it. Wasn't much.

So my kiddo has been struggling with math here recently so I bought this for him. While he hates it and the fact that I am making him do more math than what the school is giving him; I love it. Totally worth the price.

I am using this book for both my rising 7th (struggles in math) and my 4th grader (advanced learner) and I can not say enough good things about the Spectrum Math series. Information is scaffolded well, laid out clearly and concisely. Material is not dumbed down. Lesson are SO important for 6th/7th grade and the way they explain exponents and powers of 10 and percents are critical in mastering material needed in later grades. It isn't straight drilling, but offers lots of review. This book actually teaches your child how to do the problems, but you have to teach the WHY. The materials is right in line with a 5th grade curriculum. My 4th grader is advanced learner with exposure to fractions, multi-step multiplication, area models, metrics and division. This is a solid book for her to advance to the 6th grade curriculum this year and I don't feel like anything is getting missed. My 7th grader has gaps of knowledge ALL OVER THE PLACE and struggles with Math. I am taking her back to build her up. She has more exposure to upper level content, but never learned WHY she was doing things and manipulating problems a certain way. This is just what she needs to get caught back up. The schools say they remediate your kids (they don't - they just teach them how to pass the EOG test), but this book actually does teach your child (you need to help of course). If you have your child work through it consistently and with fidelity, they will either advance their knowledge one level or bridge gaps they may have missed at this level. I feel relieved to have found this series for both my girls and am excited to start the 6th grade workbook which is also high rated in my opinion.

I bought this last year- the summer before my son entered fifth grade. I figured it would allow him to get an idea of what fifth grade math will be like. I have to tell you, it helped him tremendously in fifth grade. The concepts in this workbook are: Multiplying and Dividing two and three digits, Place Value, Using Decimals in all Operations, Fractions in all operations, Geometry, Mathematical Expressions/ Pre-Algebra, the dreaded Order Of Operations and Graphing. They fit with the Common Core for Math in my state. I taught him what I know and what he was comfortable learning. He told me that when he was in Math class, he felt like the lessons were second nature, because he was already exposed to it. His Math standard test scores were excellent. This is not a workbook that the child can work on independently (unless he/she has been through fifth grade). Each lesson has questions with answers in the back. Learning ahead may not be for every child, but it works for my son.

Lots of arithmetic exercises, which is fine, but the problems are really boring and simplistic. Very repetitive and uninspiring...this doesn't make math fun at all. If I just wanted my daughter to repeat arithmetic operations I can write a bunch myself; given the reviews I was hoping this book had some fun problems, puzzle like, that will pick her curiosity. If all you want is for her to develop speed in multiplying and dividing, fractions, etc, then there is a gazillion exercises here, but your kid will be bored out of his/her mind and learn to dislike math. You can just write those yourself in a page and you would have the same value and save the cost of the book!

No matter what subject you are looking for a little extra help in this is a great product for you. They break down the problems really well, one thing I love about these books is they lay flat and you don't have to keep pushing the centerfold down as you are working on them. I am really happy with this brand and will be getting more of them. Wonderful books!

great book to have over the summer for the child that may be a bit unclear on certain math issues or for those that want to stay ahead. Really enjoy these books. Others that I've looked at don't show how to do the problem. The spectrum does just that. Doesn't leave ya hanging. will continue to buy these books again & again

I like the layout and the way they handle the subject matter the best for math. It's easy on the eyes and provides good explanations (most of the time). I always get Spectrum workbooks for math. One improvement that I would make is to break the assignments down so that each one takes a similar amount of time. I generally give my kids one page of math workbook each day. Sometimes, the page takes a long time; other times, it take a short amount of time, so I've had to divide the pages differently based on how long I think the assignment will take.

I purchased this to tutor a young lady who was joining my incoming 6th grade class. It covers a wide range of skills and provides both instruction and practice worksheets. I like it much better than the Kumon workbooks I purchased at the time also.
