This book highlights and summarizes important concepts, but not in enough detail. I read through most of it and did all of the practice tests it includes, studying intermittently for about 3 weeks, and I received a score of 53; passing but not by much. I found that the questions on the actual test were much more difficult; they were worded differently than the practice tests provided in this book. The actual test also included many theories as well as specific psychologists/theorists. This is the fourth CLEP exam I've taken, and have used this brand of study guides for all and passed all of them (with more than enough points, aside from this one). Overall, it gets the job done if you put in the effort, although I found this particular one to be the least helpful.

This study guide will help you pass the CLEP test but not necessarily ace it. I got a scaled score of 70. I practically memorized the book. In addition, I reviewed a few concepts using a Life Span college textbook I borrowed from a friend, and used Google search to find out info on a few more topics like Gardners personality- career types, Hierarchy of Needs, Big 5 Theory, and Gifted Children studies. I couldn't have studied anymore than I did but there were some questions covering topics I had never heard of. That said, if you study this book well, apply some common sense, and supplement with a few online searches, you should do well on the test, and passing is what counts.

I passed using this book but it doesn't cover a lot of topics.Following are the topics that were on my exam but not in this book -Work of Robert Rosenthal, Tiffany Field, Howard Gardner, Sandra bemBig five theoryMaslow hierarchy of needsStat test

Thought this was a great review study guide! I studied hard for 2.5 weeks prior to taking the Clep exam. I thought it was helpful to have the pretest, and two other tests online to see how you are progressing. My school requires a 50 or higher on the exam to get credit. The mock test I got a 69. It was helpful to the types of questions, however I thought the real clep test was more difficult; ie: more that one answer that could be right and have to choose the most correct answer. On the actual clep I got a 58, so I passed! A little too close for comfort though. This book didn't really cover neuro very well so cross refrance other sources would be a good idea. This book does a good job on theories and development. It's easy to understand. Overall totally worth every penny. This just saved me more than $500 in books and tuition and not to mention my precious time by testing out of this class!!

I studied for five days straight for my CLEP exam and got a 74. I took an intro psyche class three years ago and that's the only other exposure I've had to psychology before this. I had to have a second psychology for a graduate program, I came to this realization fairly late in my application process which is why I decided to CLEP it. I read this book all the way through, made flash cards and looked up some extra details from youtube using the MCAT Kaplan psyche tutorials on the theorists. This book really does cover the meat of the exam. I would also recommend buying the study guide from the CLEP website for the specific test and referencing that against the book. Otherwise this book is a sure bet.

This is arguably the best source to utilize if you need to pass the Clep Human Growth and Development exam. I took the test yesterday and passed with a 62. I would estimate that 85% of the material on the test was covered in this book. The online component was quite helpful, as it mimics the test's conditions and provides you valuable feedback on your strengths and weaknesses. Also, three of the practice test questions were on the actual Clep exam. This book does have its issues, though, in regards to accuracy in at least three instances: (1) Page 33 states, “A correlation coefficient can range in value from 0-1.” In truth, a correlation coefficient ranges from -1 through +1, with zero signifying the two variables have no relationship. (2) Page 45 states, “Because so many vital organs and body parts are developing during the embryo stage or second trimester, harmful agents are especially dangerous during this prenatal period.” The embryo stage is during the first trimester, not the second. (3) These mislabelings of the stages of prenatal development also occur on pages 42-43, as the text refers to the first trimester as the “germinal period,” the second trimester as the “period of the embryo,” and the third trimester as the “period of the fetus.” Both the germinal stage and the embryo stage occur in the first trimester, with the fetus period occurring in all three trimesters. Overall, these three mistakes do not devalue the book as an indispensable study resource. I know of no other text that covers the material as comprehensively and as concisely as Dr. Heindel’s does!

I needed to pass the Human Growth and Development CLEP exam to get preschool teacher certified. I came at the exam with years of professional teaching experience a Masters degree in an unrelated field. The material in this book covers 90% of possible exam material (there were definitely things on the exam that weren't in the book). I spent about 3 weeks reading and reviewing. Because the book is so condensed, every sentence or seemingly irrelevant bit of information could be part of a question!! So really read it and don't skim. The practice tests are SUPER helpful and really prepare you for the actual exam. I got a scaled score of 73 on the practice tests in the book and a 62 on the actual exam. If ever I need to dodge an undergrad course in the future, I will definitely use the REA study guides for CLEP exams!

I only read through this once, taking two practice tests. I made a 59. Be aware, however, that I came into this with prior knowledge from my LPN program and my statistics course. It had been well over a year since I had reviewed any of this information. This book helped me learn new concepts and refresh on what I didn't remember well. The practice tests seemed pretty representative of the information on the actual test. I was scoring around 70 on the practice tests. Hit my recommend!

I have always said that if you love basketball, you will love “Slam Dunk”.But volume 7 is a much different story as a group of thugs who have problems with Ryota Miyagi, have come into Shohoku High School. Disrespect their court by spitting on it, hitting some of their players in the face and using weapons and hurting the players of the team. While blackmailing them, if they fight back, it would be the end of their season.But for Sakuragi, Rukawa and Miyagi, can they let these thugs disrespect their court and their team without a fight? Will they risk it all?Of all “Slam Dunk” volumes I have read, this is the volume that is not about basketball but about a team working together and backing up each other like brothers against a group of dangerous thugs.Overall, “Slam Dunk” is an enjoyable manga series and while this volume is not about basketball, there is a lot of fight action that people will see in this volume. So, if you have warmed up to the characters of the series, you’ll definitely dig this volume!“Slam Dunk” vol. 7 is recommended!

Slam Dunk has a great story, interesting protagonists and some of the most beautiful art I've ever seen! Personally, I am a huge fan of sports, basketball in particular. Though knowing the game is not imperative to enjoy this manga. Recommended to anyone!

just stumbled onto the anime via ps3 as i was extremely bored. took a chance as i used to play basketball growing up & had great memories about celtic vs lakers matches in 80s. this anime was huge in china town about 5-10 yrs ago but thought b-ball passe at that time. but wow it totally energizes me & thankfully it was in jap dialogue w subtitles.anime esp after ep 20 & onwards gets very exciting with the b-ball matches. that`s when the anime really comes alive. which is how you should approach( this before reading the manga.the manga is definitely better but reading it first will ruin the suspense when watching the anime.the anime will really frustrate you as they stretch out storyline but it really feels great when they show the outcome. knowing the outcome via the manga will ruin the suspense. so the directors did a good job as they literally copied the manga but expanded the time frame.reading the manga at this point is great as this & next vol is better in manga form vs anime where it took like 5-7 episodes to complete & is the reason i suggest skipping the first 20 eps.if you had played, then it is going to be more enjoyable & will bring back memories but the writer is gifted and you will still enjoy it if you have not played b-ball. Plus the drawing style after vol 8 and onwards. which i found more platable vs the first 6 vols.ps the jap vocals are not great which is the surprise here but prob way better than the english vocals hired to do subs. the jap vocal talents all sound like 22yrs vs 15-17yr age. also the jap inuyasha talent is also sakuragi here.update: jap voice of hikoichi is the same as triggun. unbelievable!

Virginia Hein was born in Los Angeles, California, and the landscape of the city is her favorite subject. She received her MFA in Drawing and Painting from California State University, Long Beach and has worked as a concept and character designer, illustrator and fine artist. She now teaches drawing at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, and also teaches location sketching workshops. She has been a member of Urban Sketchers since 2009, and is a correspondent for the highly popular Urban Sketchers blog. I have a large library of painting, drawing and sketching books. Unfortunately, like so many books especially Walter Foster books, this one tries to touch on almost everything a trained artist should know, but in such little detail, and it is not really geared to 5-Minute Sketching. There are nice examples of sketched and pen and wash work, though. The book is more like 5-Minute art concepts to think about using in your landscape sketching...sketching that would take you way more than 5 minutes.Examples of what I'm saying: the pages on perspective and the horizon line do not show any horizon lines. It would have been easy to draw on top of the examples to show readers what horizon lines are. There is also no mention of the different kinds of perspective. The pages on measuring with your eye does not stress the importance of locking your arm to get consistent measurements, and the photos to do not show it, but rather just a hand... or how to convert your measurements to scale up or down from what you see out there to scale to your paper or canvas. My point is that so many topics are touched on lightly as to possibly not be as helpful as they should for a beginner.I was hoping for strategies on how to start a five minute sketch and how to think about what I can accomplish in that amount of time. I had a teacher once who actually made little folded paper books that touched on this topic and she advocated just a lot of rough outlines of buildings and minimizing shapes and almost no detail; only the essence of the scene. I was looking more for this kind of advice.The book is inspirational, though. I want to like it and will keep going over it. I hope others get more out of it.

Great little sketching book! Lots of inspiration and tips for sketching landscapes on the go. I have 2 books in this series, and they were both worth the purchase price.

A good book with excellent examples & ideas.I paint professionally and still found it useful. I like the whole series!

Fantastic book for just diving into landscape sketching and not worrying about perfection or getting every detail. I rarely sketched landscapes before and needed a little direction and confidence to start and this book did that. It breaks down the elements of landscape sketching into simply tips that are very useful.

I don't know about the 5 minutes claim but the book itself is well worth the purchase. Have really enjoyed learning from this well illustrated book.

Some of the suggestions were obvious with regards to scheduling but for the most part all this information could’ve been gotten online for free. Same with the similar book for buildings. It took up space in my suitcase and it wasn’t a necessity

I do not sketch or draw, but I was fascinated by the sketches Ms. Hein does and wanted to read ore about her artistic thinking. I read this is one sitting,loved it, read it again the next day. It inspired me so much in my professional work and and my non drawing artwork. I can't thank her enough for this book. I have reccomended it to several others.

When I think of Virginia Hein’s work, two things come to mind: light and composition. She is a master of both, and when I heard she had a new book on landscape sketching, I was thrilled to be able to learn her techniques.5-Minute Sketching – Landscapes: Super-Quick Techniques for Amazing Drawings is the latest in Firefly Books’ series on drawing from life that focuses on speed. (Other books in the series that I’ve enjoyed are on architecture, people, and animals, by Liz Steel, Pete Scully, and Gary Geraths, respectively.)Although the term “urban sketching” appears nowhere in the description, all of the principles and techniques covered by Virginia’s book could apply to any type of on-location landscape sketching – urban or rural, desert or tropical, land or sea. Almost all of the sketch example contributors are familiar to me from the Urban Sketchers community, including Shari Blaukopf, Laura Frankstone, Don Low, Shiho Nakaza, Melanie Reim and Pat Southern-Pearce, to name just a few. And of course, Virginia herself, a Los Angeles resident, Urban Sketchers symposium instructor and USk correspondent, contributes many of her own urban and other landscape sketches to the book.Divided into four main sections, the book begins with an overview of composition, perspective and observation in See the Big Picture. I was particularly interested in topics on seeing large shapes, emphasizing the light, and learning to simplify a complex scene by identifying a strong focal point – all strategies that I see Virginia employing so well in her work.Drilling down further, the second chapter covers specific strategies and techniques for sketching on location, including an exploration of various tools, materials and support formats. Because I know Virginia works frequently in watercolor, I expected the book to have a heavy emphasis on that medium, but I was happily surprised to find that it takes much more of a mixed media approach. For quick sketches, she advises working on a small scale, not only because small sketches are faster, but also because it encourages more exploration and playing without the fear of wasting materials.Chapter 3 focuses on specific elements we encounter in most landscapes such as trees, sky, water and foliage. In this section, I especially appreciate Virginia’s emphasis on observing these elements closely so that they never appear generic. For example, many trees in a particular terrain may look similar, but drawing them requires seeing each tree as a unique individual and capturing its personality. At the same time, she gives ideas on how to see and evoke large masses of foliage so that we don’t attempt to draw each leaf. Finding this balance between the specific and the general is a key to sketching a landscape quickly and yet accurately capturing its essence.The last section, Take it Further, offers fun and creative ideas for using improvised materials (coffee, anyone?) and unconventional formats and breaking out of habitual ruts. As an intrepid urban sketcher, Virginia encourages telling stories by creating montages of small sketches, developing a sequence, or simply writing notes directly on the sketchbook page. She urges spontaneity and being open to whatever the moment offers. For example, if birds or a blimp appear suddenly in the sky, put them into the sketch!Overall, I highly recommend this delightful resource of ideas and tips for almost any kind of on-location sketching from one of my favorite artists.What I’m going to say next is not at all a criticism of Virginia’s book, but it’s related to the whole series. While I enjoy the subject matter and material covered in the 5-Minute Sketching series, I’m not sure the material is always served well by the “super-quick” approach the publisher has taken. Throughout each book in the series, the format is consistent: Each topic gets a page of five “tips to get you started,” and on the facing page are small sketch examples from the author and contributors. While many topics can be covered with this approach, others might require more explanation or more than five tips, but the author is constrained by the rigid format. It would be nice if the format allowed showing some of the examples at full size, for example (only the chapter introductions include large images), instead of tiny reductions, or more than one paragraph per tip. Instead of “5-minute sketching,” maybe the series should be called “5-minute reading,” as the books are written so that it’s easy to grasp a single concept by reading the tips and scanning the images next to them. But learning how to sketch in five minutes probably takes more than a quick read.

About the Author

During three decades as an editor, writer, and photographer, Joe Yogerst has lived and worked on four continents including Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America. His writing has appeared in National Geographic, Condé Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, The Los Angeles Times, and The International Herald Tribune, among others. No question this is the definitive work on the National Geographic Magazine. For those of us who have enjoyed this publication over the years this is a dream come true. The editors of this work had a mind-boggling task ahead of them in deciding what to include in these three massive volumes. With literally millions upon millions of photographs to consider I don't know how they arrived at their final selections. This set comprises 1500 pages and it could have easily contained twice that and still have left out many of our favorite images.A large number of the photographs are recognizably iconic images that have been included in other works devoted to the magazine. But never have they been produced in such a large format and with such stunning clarity. I was particularly pleased to see so many of the older images included. Doing so really gives the reader a sense of the formidable history of this legendary journal. There really is no publication, today, that is treasured like the National Geographic. I can't think of one that is collected to the degree that it is. Having been in the used book trade for a number of years I can't count the collections I have seen lovingly preserved by their owners. I have, myself, a complete run of this magazine dating back to 1910 and a full set of maps starting in 1935. I never tire of perusing those back issues.The production quality of this set is absolutely top notch. The binding material is identical to that of the slipcases and has a very sumptuous textured feel. The books are well constructed, tightly bound and attractively designed. The three volumes even come in their own attractively illustrated storage container. National Geographic was well advised in partnering with Taschen on this project as few publishers can match their experience and success in these monumental projects.This set should appeal to any serious National Geographic enthusiast, or lover of great photography, and is a must have for every institutional library. For the individual the price represents a sizable investment. But these are books that were designed to offer many years of viewing enjoyment and will assuredly open the world up to you and your entire family.

I am overwhelmed with joy after spending just one afternoon with this truly exceptional book set. I have never seen more moving pictures in one book. The quality of the printing of the photographs is just superb and the amazing covers that turn into robust book stands ( you have to see these in person to understand what Taschen has created). My prediction is these expensive books will double in market value as soon as the 125,000 copies are sold). Yes they are expensive but you will not regret buying them.

Absolutely marvelous! Am amazing collection of historical photographs taken of places around the world, many of which don't exist any more or have changed so much as to be almost unrecognizable today. I gave the set to young parents who just had their first baby. They were awe-struck, said it will be used to educate their children, and be guarded as a keepsake forever in the family.

Stunning! this is mostly historical material from National Geographic. Magnificent photos you can spend hours with these books.

Purchased as a gift for a photography enthusiast and they immediately became one of their most precious possessions. The quality of the contents is priceless and having them in such large print proves their worth.

I gave this to my husband who is a photographer. He is enjoying it very much. He is amazed at the quality of the paper used by the publisher. It is very, very heavy! Expensive, but if you love photography, it's a must for your collection.

This set is astounding. It's going to be one of those highly sought after books once the initial batch sells out. Don't hesitate because of the price. It's worth every penny. Beautiful.

Gutenberg would be proud that the printing press can compete with a 60-inch 4K HDTV. Photography's art is beautifully evident in this collection. I would love to see this on the HDTV, but it was a compelling experience to turn the pages and pause on the reflected glow, something projected glow can't duplicate (yet).Also, very good exercise for the arms.

About the Author

Leslie Charteris was born in Singapore on May 12th, 1907. With his mother and brother, he moved to England in 1919 and attended Rossall School in Lancashire before moving on to Cambridge University to study law. His studies there came to a halt when a publisher accepted his first novel. His third book, entitled Meet the Tiger!, was written when he was twenty years old and published in September 1928. It introduced the world to Simon Templar, aka the Saint.He continued to write about the Saint until 1983 when the last book, Salvage for the Saint, was published. The books, which have been translated into over thirty languages, number nearly a hundred and have sold over 40 million copies around the world. They’ve inspired, to date, fifteen feature films, three TV series, ten radio series, and a comic strip that was written by Charteris and syndicated around the world for over a decade. He enjoyed travelling but settled for long periods in Hollywood, Florida, and finally in Surrey, England. He was awarded the Cartier Diamond Dagger by the Crime Writers’ Association in 1992, in recognition of a lifetime of achievement. I enjoy the Saint stories, and the variety of stories here is quite enjoyable.

Lesllie Charteris did it again; he created an extremely entertaining compilation of stories featuring our favorite 20th Century Robin Hood, Simon Templar. I heartily endorse it!

Six great stories. I espespecially liked The Patient Playboy for the return of Inspector Teale.

This Saint book (one of Charteris’ later ones) consists of six short stories. I would rate three of them as excellent, one as quite good, and two as only just OK. For me, the best one is the last one, “The Element of Doubt”.Several of these stories were turned into early episodes of the TV version of the Saint. These too were quite entertaining, but not as good as the book versions. And the TV Saint does not have the same hard, ruthless edge as the book Saint does.To look at the positive side first, this book has plenty of examples of Charteris’ amusing writing, such as this paragraph from one of the stories, where an attractive married woman “comes on” to the Saint:“She came so close, deliberately, that the first time they both inhaled simultaneously would have caused a most stimulating collision.”It also amuses me that Charteris occasionally throws in some really obscure word which in a lifetime of reading I’ve never come across before, and which I have to look up.In some of the Saint books, I find that Charteris goes over the top in impressing upon us just what a dashing, tall, handsome, blue-eyed, debonair, witty, adventure-loving buccaneer the Saint is. But in this volume he doesn’t do that – which is another plus.On the negative side, in one story Charteris has the Saint spouting some awful reactionary and racist nonsense, when he condemns foreign aid and sings the praises of the British Empire for “taming savages” etc!In general, there is much less racism in the Saint books than in most of the crime fiction of that period. (Charteris himself was of mixed Chinese-British parentage.) But this rant by the Saint is certainly off-putting.This is a pity, especially when at other times Charteris can express, through the mouths of his characters, some pretty progressive, and even left-radical, views. (I’ve said more on this in my review here on Amazon of “The Saint Intervenes”.)Overall, I am a fan of the Saint books, but rather a selective one. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed some of them (as I did when I first read some as a teenager in the 1960s), but I’ve been disappointed with others. This one is certainly worth reading.Finally, I know that many Saint fans prefer the novella-length or full-length Saint stories, but for a bit of light entertainment that you can dip into, I personally prefer the short stories which feature in this book and in others such as “The Saint Intervenes”, “The Brighter Buccaneer”, “The Happy Highwayman”, “Saint Errant” and “The Saint in Europe”. These short stories tend to be even more fast-paced than the longer ones; they have the usual Charteris brand of humour; and some of them have genuinely surprising endings.PS: This is a review of "The Saint to the Rescue". Due to some fault on Amazon it has also appeared in error as a review of "The Saint around the World". I've also noticed that a couple of other reviews here by other people have been put by Amazon on the wrong one of these two books.Phil Webster.(England)

Six stories, of moderate length:• in "The Patient Playboy" (Bermuda) Simon tries to help a wife recover her kidnapped husband.• "The Talented Husband" (England) finds the Saint helping dear old Claud Eustace Teal to solve his last case before he retires.• in "The Reluctant Nudist" (France) Simon solves a particularly egregious murder.• in "The Lovelorn Sheikh" (The Middle East) he helps an oil prospector who has had the misfortune to fall foul of a local potentate, producing a potentially drastic confrontation with Islamic law.• "The Pluperfect Lady" (Malaya ) is perhaps the best story of the bunch, taking place during what the British euphemistically call The Malayan Emergency, i.e. a guerilla campaign (1948-60) fought to prevent a communist takeover. The characters and background are skilfully drawn, and there are interesting allusions to the Saint's early days in the country, even before the start of Meet the Tiger.• "The Sporting Chance" (Vancouver), with its rather banal Cold War stereotypes, is the poorest story, despite the nostalgic reference to Norman Kent (of The Last Hero).One of the nice things about all the Saint stories is that Charteris always seems intimately familiar with the different locations he writes about.Am I alone in thinking that product placements seem to have found their way into the later ones — in this instance, for Dry Sack (sherry) and Peter Dawson (whisky)? The sentence construction and the repeated mention of the brand names both seem uncharacteristically clumsy.3½ stars.P.S. This is the first Saint book I've read and after the first few stories I'd decided to start at the beginning of the series, but then I came to the racist/sexist story (I'm not sure if the sexist part was supposed to be taken at face value, but there's no way to excuse the racist parts), so as much as I liked letting a guy get away with killing his blackmailers and scamming scammers, I won't be reading any more unless I can be assured that story was an outlier.

This series of Saint stories seems to have been written during the popular TV series as one can easily imagine Roger Moore in the role of the Saint. All stories are quite interesting.

Six tales; set in San Francisco, Florida (twice), California (twice) and Mississippi.As previously, although the plots have by now become rather formulaic, the details remain inventive.3½ stars.P.S. For a list of — and discussion of — all Charteris's Saint books, see my So You'd Like To... Guide.
