As time would show, this fluff piece by Albom was fiction at its greatest height.The bits about Chris Webber not having the money to buy a hamburger must be read to be believed, since we now know that he was taking hundred thousand dollar-plus payoff from Ed Martin during his two years in Ann Arbor.It strains credulity to think that Mitch Albom could have spent all that time around the Michigan team and not noticed the players driving the fancy cars and flashing around the other signs of obvious wealth such as luxury apartments.And Mitch wonders why he has a credibility issue.

"What scares you Jalen? Death, said Jalen,... because I can't imagine a world without me in it." The cockiness that was the Fab Five is captured perfectly by Mitch Albom in his book the Fab Five; Basketball, Trash Talk and the American Dream. Like Albom's other books Tuesdays with Morrie and 5 People You Meet in Heaven, his story telling engulfs the reader and transforms a normal story into a legendary tale. Albom recognizes the important interaction between people in their actions and conversations and captures that in his writing. This story, the Fab Five, was a great book and one of the best for any sports fan. The "Greatest Class Ever Recruited", as Albom called them, is a great story that is told from behind the scenes, during the Fab Five's historic career at the University of Michigan. The Fab Five by Albom is the finest sports book because Albom's humorous and stylish writing brings to life the events surrounding five freshmen that transformed college basketball. The Fab Five is a book about Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson, the fabulous five freshmen at the University of Michigan. A group assembled in many different ways, each contributing a unique story to what brought them to Ann Arbor. Albom takes his first few chapters describing the intricate lines that connected each player to Ann Arbor. Jalen and Chris were from Detroit and went to UofM because they were always best friends. Ray Jackson and Jimmy King are from Texas. Ray Jackson was noticed accidentally while scouts were in Texas recruiting other players. For Jimmy King, he came to UofM because Juwan Howard, his roommate on a recruiting trip, was going. And to put it all together, Juwan became a Michigan Wolverine because his recently diseased grandmother wanted him to go to UofM. Together they became the Fab Five and marched their way on campus and took the college basketball world by storm making it to back-to-back NCAA men's national championship appearances. The caliber of talent that sounds this book is one for the history books. However, the Fab Five would not be the book it was without the writing and story telling ability of Mitch Albom. Albom has been voted the number one sports writer an unprecedented seven times by the Associated Press Sports Editors. He has hosted a TV show on ESPN and written many famous books as well as a sports column for the "Detroit Free Press". His ability to touch every reader regardless of background is rare. He makes people cry reading Tuesdays with Morrie and people stand up in cheer for the `91 Michigan basketball team in the Fab Five. But one of the things that makes this story one for the ages is that while on many teams today it is rare to see two freshmen starting a game, in 1991 the Fab Five were five freshman players who all started on a team that made it to the NCAA men's Championship basketball game. Having five freshman start a national championship game is unheard of and still to this day, unmatched. Albom predicts, "There will never be another group like the Fab Five." Through what brought them to Michigan, through every behind the scenes event, through every exciting and electrifying game, this book comes to life in front of the readers' eyes. As the book progresses the plot thickens for these young athletes as if Albom himself wrote the story. Every big game and tournament game was commentated as if live from the radio. Albom writes, "And with 21 seconds left, Michigan lead by just a basket, 71-69. `No three-point-shots,' fisher yelled." The games brought a sense of involvement for the reader taking them back in time to the game. With writing style that is clear and descriptive, and while combined with the dazzling games provided by the Michigan Basketball team, this leads to a suspenseful, well illustrated book that makes the heart pump and adrenaline rush. While watching the suspenseful games, Albom knew greatness at the very moment it happened and was there to preserve ever moment of history in his book; a book about kids who became "The Greatest Class Ever Recruited." They had become the most popular names and faces in college basketball. In Ann Arbor, they sold jerseys and shorts for a hundred and fifty dollars total; "They sold out in a heartbeat," Albom wrote. Stories like these make this book different than any other sports book, a book written while the events occurred with detailed stories nobody else could get. He also wrote about that one game they all walked onto the court with their fashionably baggy shorts, black socks and black shoes revolutionizing college basketball, and he was there to catch every story and detail. Black socks, black shoes and baggy shorts all surprised people watching college basketball. Later looking back, people would contribute these five freshmen as revolutionizing basketball and creating its image today. Albom knew this and felt it was necessary to capture their uniqueness in this book. Mitch Albom, like the rest of the world knew greatness while it was happening and the passion and enthusiasm that he wrote with to illustrate that greatness he was witnessing is another example of why this book is so fabulous. Albom also included inside stories, taking the reader to a place only a few were able to see. Inside the games, inside the practices and inside the family that was the Fab Five. When Jalen walked in the first day as a freshman and announced, "Freshmen verse ya'll," everyone in the gym was stunned. Where most freshmen come in to find themselves at the bottom of the barrel, these freshmen came in and ran right to the top. After saying, "Freshmen verse ya'll," the five freshman went on to win three scrimmages against the upper classmen. Albom wrote, "The Fab Five has been born." While many people could watch the televised games and see for themselves the spectacle surrounding these freshmen, he took this audience backstage and incorporated these stories that give the reader more than they could otherwise see. Stories about crazy pranks to trash talking rants and bizarre interviews to the baggy shorts and black socks and shoes, is why Fab Five gives the reader more than a sports book. It gives the reader a legendary, and even though no previous knowledge is necessary a substantial amount of time is essential because putting the book down once the readers starts if difficult. The Fab Five is a humorous, entertaining and well written book, but furthermore, it is an inside look at one of the greatest college basketball stories. Mitch Albom, as one of America's most heralded writers, gives one of his best writing performances for his perfectly illustrated, historical tale of "The Greatest Recruiting Class Ever." He captivated my attention and sparked my interest in Michigan Basketball because of his urban style humor and story telling ability. While most other historical accounts tend to be boring, Mitch Albom captivates his readers and provides one of the best books about sports; a must read for any sports fan. Albom quoted Jalen Rose, "they'll be talking about us for 20 years." This is true about the Fab Five and the Fab Five will be talked about for many years to come

Gift for someone else. There was a sticker on back that even with carefully taken off tore off part of the cover. It did not come with the cover as you see in this picture. It was just a blue board book with no cover. It was Fab Five inside and she did add to her collection. I wished it had the cover.

I love the book, which reminds me of when I was little watching the Fab Five play. When read right before and after watching the documentary, it makes it even better. The thing that irks me is the tone of the old, white sportswriter (I know, Albom is more than a sportswriter now) portraying inner-city life and in-game trash talk. It makes me cringe and there isn't a page that goes by without that feeling. It made this book very hard to finish, but it's worth powering through.

Loved the ESPN movie and have watched it over and over. Surprisingly, the book is way better! A very detailed and close look at the Fab Five (and their teammates) and Coach Fisher personally. A must-have for any Michigan fan.

As a man who went to college during the fab five era, it was a cool read, and walk down memory lane of a time when I couldn't trade in my basketball short shorts, for a pair of the fab five long baggy shorts fast enough, these 5 kids really did touch and change the worlds of so many people!!! This is a well written book that really engulfs the reader, highly recommended! Especially if you are a Michigan fan!

Mitch Albom does it again! A fantastic insight into the group that changed basketball to what it is today (for good or bad according to some). I have been waiting to read this for nearly 20 years since it came out, and finally got the chance and bought it. No disappointment, and reading this much later, it was a wonderful stroll down memory lane. Mitch paints a picture that allows you to visualize all the details. You always watched them and either loved or hated their brash attitudes, but you cannot deny their impact. Now know what went on behind the scenes. Thanks Mitch, keep up the good work.

One of the best books I've ever read, check out the ESPN 30 for 30 about the Fab Five, this goes more in depth but the documentary is very good as well and features Mitch Albom.

I agree with Kate’s statement at the end of this book... My favorite stories are those that include witty banter and sizzling unspoken feelings. It’s hard to find a book that achieves these qualities that isn’t overly sexual (a book I’d be comfortable recommending) or just holds no chemistry between the characters and has boring or cheesy rapport. I get so excited when I find one! It’s so rare. Thanks Kate for such a great read. I wonderfully wasted several days because I couldn’t put these books down. I hope you write story after story because I will keep reading them :)

These books are hard for me to put done. I love seeing Briand fight to survive. Some progress is finally made with Kael and Jehn is certainly intriguing. That ending, though!

Kate Avery Ellison is absolutely one of my favorite authors. Like every book before this, the characters are well developed and the storyline flows smoothly.

Kate Avery Ellison, who is the author of the Frost series now has a series is called The Kingmaker's War. In the first installment of the Kingmaker's War, A Gift of Poison", our heroine, Briand is an orphan, living with her cruel Uncle, and barely getting by on her own. She is viewed as the castle troublemaker and has earned the nickname "Guttersnipe". Briand's actions get her banned from the castle, on the verge of being sent to the woodlands, when she discovers her cousin is involved with a secret society. Briand uncovers powers she did not know she was capable of and ends up a member of the secret band of rebels. The country is at war. A war between the "true" Prince who is living with his court in exile and the usurper Prince who is ravaging the land leaving in his wake destruction and death. The rebel leader of this secret society, Kael, enlists Briand to aid in their efforts to defeat the evil Prince and his army of evil Seekers.As the series progresses you learn that Briand takes a stand, refusing to actually join the rebel of forces of the exiled Prince, while continuing to aid them on their missions. She eventually meets the Prince, who we learn is devious and untrustworthy in-spite of the fact that he maintains the unrelenting faithfulness of his followers; a prime example of this unwavering loyalty being Kael. No story is complete without a love triangle.....of sorts or at least I think it wants to be a love triangle. Briand and Kael fall in love. A long the way Briand develops a love hate relationship with a Seeker. A Seeker is an individual with special powers - be they the ability to heal, read other's minds, etc. The Seekers are tools of the Monarchist's cause and work for the evil Prince. The Seeker Auberon and Briand have formed an unwanted connection. At points in the story they become unlikely allies, working together to solve a shared problem, and yet at the end of the alliance each looks for opportunity to betray the other. The reader learns that Auberon has had a troubled past. I am going to just come out and admit I am full-on team Auberon. I think I have a thing for bad boys. Don't get me wrong, I love Kael and all his goodness, but Auberon is a troubled bad boy looking for someone to understand him. If we are being honest Auberon and Briand share a lot of similar life experiences and can relate on a level she cannot with Kael. A couple of times now Ellison has lead me to believe that something special was building between Briand and Auberon but I am really starting to wonder if the romance isn't all in my head. I guess we will see.Right now there are 6 completed books in the Kingmaker's War with book 7 due out October 29th, 2018. I read the first 4 books in two days. The story drew me in from the first sentence. As a bonus these books are available via Kindle Unlimited.Books in the series:A Gift of Poison (Book 1)A Bed of Blades (Book 2)A Kiss of Treason (Book 3)A Circle of Flames (Book 4)A Shield of Sorrow (Book 5)A Court of Lies (Book 6)A Reign of Thieves (Book 7 - Due Out Soon)Grammar - 3There are a few minor grammatical issues with these books. It is not overwhelming but a couple of times I found myself re-reading a sentence. Words were missing or in the wrong place. If this is something you find to be problematic then it might be an issue for you but in the grand scheme of things it was not a deal breaker.Plot - 4.5I love the story. A young woman who has had to struggle in life to survive. She eventually finds herself and her purpose. Along the way she develops her own identity and her own belief system. Briand learns to read, she becomes educated, she learns to fight, she sees the world, she finds a cause that she supports without getting lost in that cause, and she becomes an individual. She takes the skills she used to survive as a young teen and uses those tools to make her mark on the world.Believability - 4.5The story is fantasy. It is a wonderfully made up world with dragons and other imaginary creatures. Ellison has built an environment for these characters and creatures to live in. I believe that sometime or somewhere this world and these people could exist.Cover - 3.5The covers are nice but don't have that "wow" factor. As a person who has historically been drawn to a book by it's cover I might not have taken a second look if it wasn't for my already familiarity with the author. I loved Kate Avery Ellison's Frost series and was already onboard for the Kingmakers War regardless of the way the covers looked.Ending - 4.5The story has not yet concluded so the ending is really not a factor to consider at this point. Each book is definitely not a stand alone. The story flows effortlessly from book to book and a reader needs to read from the beginning to fully understand the storyline.Price Value - 4.5For me they were free with Kindle Unlimited and you can't beat free. If you do not have Kindle Unlimited the price is relatively low and the books are well worth the cost.Overall - 4.5I am in love with this series. I downloaded the first book when it came out and forgot it was in my kindle until a couple of weeks ago when I rediscovered it Labor Day weekend. I love all the characters, even the ones I don't think I am supposed to. Sometimes when a series has this many books I find one that I will struggle to complete at least one of the books but each book in this series has been truly engaging.I highly recommend this series and wait with baited breath for the next installment.

This book was well worth the wait. 10 stars! I completely loved it! Another awesome book in the series. Looking forward to the next one. Congratulations to the author on writing such a fabulous book.

What can I say other than an excellent read even at book#3. I still love all the characters and so happy to see Briand's and Kael`s relationship move forward. I could sit here an type a long review but just know if you loved books 1&2 you will not be disappointed with this one. Please don't make us wait as long for book #4.

This has been a great series so far. I would like it even more if the books did a better job of standing alone and there were a few less important characters. I’m also not so fond of just getting to know a character and then having them killed off. But the author does a great job of creating and populating a diverse and interesting universe.

I loved this book! I was dragged kicking and screaming through parochial school grades 1 through 8 1/2. This felt like payback for all those awful nuns.What a wonderful book. Chris Moore has a great sense of humor, and I have every intention of reading each and every one of his books. I also plan to give them to everyone I know - including my five siblings...I strongly recommend this book, regardless of your educational background.

A friend who manages a bookstore tried to turn me on to this offering two years ago and it took me this long to get around to reading it. Now I'm kicking myself for not doing so earlier. "Lamb" is alternately touching, funny, thought-provoking and even inspirational. In an era where so much of what is published (or self-published) is utter crap, it's good to know there are still a few authors taking the time to craft brilliant, enjoyable stories.For the first time in a long time, I had a hard time putting a book down. This one cut into my sleep, but it was so worth it! I'm now reading another Moore book, "A Dirty Job," and I'm happy to report it also is excellent. I'm sure I'll be reading everything this author has in print within the next few months. One caveat, however: if you're a person with ... mmm ... something less than flexible religious convictions who's easily offended, you may want to give this one a miss. It's intended -- at least in part -- as parody, but I'm guessing not everyone is going to get the joke.

As a Catholic I had some "hang ups" when I first read it. I even went as far to put it away and not read it anymore cause I was just SOOO sure I was right about things. I told the friend that recommended it to me that is was certainly NOT my cup of tea. He is not particularly spiritual or Christian. He told me this was the book that GOT him to read the whole bible. He laughed and cried through the whole book "Lamb" he said....So I put my "thoughts" on a shelf and read it. I laughed and I cried. I am heart broke the book is finished. The kind of heart broke that you feel when your favorites TV series has its last show of its last season and no more will be made EVER. How WILL you go on is how one feels. This book has gotten me to STUDY the bible more. When I come upon certain stories in the bible that were talked about in this book "Lamb", the stories Biff, Jesus childhood friend refers too, I laugh and remember Biffs spin on it cause he was supposedly there and he told it His way. It gives me the feeling of belonging that I feel I know something that no one else knows. I huger to read more of the bible now just to keep that feeling. Yes I know which is the real and which is from the book Lamb. I just like feeling of belonging now

This story tries to imagine the big gap that occurs between Jesus' birth and his the years of public ministry. Told from the modern day perspective of Jesus' best friend, the book portrays the Messiah as that perfect kid you couldn't even hate because he is just too good. The book doesn't espouse any philosophy or dogma, but it also refrains from making fun of the beliefs of Judaism or Christianity in anything but an affectionate way. If you have an affection for religion without taking it too seriously, you might find this an enjoyable read. I sure did.

I am a devout Christian...I also appreciate good writing and a person's effort and sense of humor. Moore has clearly done a lot of research into the Jewish ways of life and all sorts of things in the time period when Jesus lived. He said mixed it with some imagination and well meant humor. I loved the book! He went wild with it and i loved every minute of it...i know a lot of Christians might call it blasphemous but I think to that Jesus would say, "relax, take a chill pill"

I expected to spend a few weeks lazing through Lamb...instead I devoured it in three days. The humor and humanity was impactful at every turn. It is a work of fiction but it humanized Jesus nicely toying neither with his legacy or legend. The book seemed to be very well-researched and pithy. Suitable for all except the fundamentally pious. Don't skip the Afterword.

I do not write reviews, ever, but dear god, everyone needs to read this book. I've never felt so strongly about a novel before. Regardless of your religious belief's, this book is 10/10 for you. Lamb is one of those books that makes you think a little differently once you finish it and leaves you with one of the largest book hangovers of all time. In the name of all that is holy, read about Biff and Josh's adventures together. Please. Learn about the first draft of the Mt of Olives speech, how bunnies became associated with Easter, the things to look for when picking a harlot, and of course, how Josh became the Messiah he was to so many people. This book is everything. I also own and love a lot of books, but Lamb is the only one where I own a hard copy, an e-book, and the audiobook. It's that important to me.

This book was so funny I died, and raised again. No seriously, unlike me, it's dead funny. If I could recommend anyone a humorous book, it would be this one. It has just the right amount of blasphemy and "reality", keeping it firmly grounded. Having read the bible, I don't find it any-less unlikely this happened, than Jesus walking on water... Well I do, but it is an entertaining thought, isn't it? And that is what makes this book so great! It COULD have happened. Do yourself a favor and try this book, it may give you a new sort of outlook on religion; a very funny one.That said, Jesus and Biff grew on me, and I'm left with a fondness for this idea.

I wish I could give this book 10 stars!!!! It was just that good. I actually listened to the audio version, which I highly recommend. The narrator is superb and his voice was an excellent choice. Mr. Peretti's ability to write a metaphoric novel explaining the wages of sin without actually preaching about it was brilliant. The book written about ten years ago was a foreshadow of the hyper grace message preached today, that you can basically live any way you want and God is alright with it because He loves you. Without giving anything away, a poignant point to remember is that when a Christian looses their conviction (stops caring), it's time to worry! The dragon is waiting. Thank you Mr. Peretti, for writing such an engaging book. I cannot say enough about the descriptions of the people, the small town, etc...I am still haunted in a good way about the importance of living a life with a pure heart, a heart that is set on repentance and loving God with integrity and reverence. Just downloaded another book to listen to with my spouse.

Frank Peretti is a fantastic author, and The Oath is my #1 favorite out of all his books. You just get totally swept up into the story and characters. It grips you from the first two words ("She ran.") all the way to the last chapter. Even in my fourth time reading the book, I still had a really hard time putting it down to go do other things.

Sometimes it takes me months to read a book, and many times I never finish them. After buying this sample book, I quickly bought the book and within a month I had it read.I had started Peretti's "The Monster" a few years ago, and halfway in, I found myself lost and getting more and more bored with the evolution vs. creation argument and the science that Mr. Peretti spent hours, I'm sure, investigating and making sure his book looked professional. The Monster became one of the unfinished books on my shelf.The Oath starts much like The Monster, in that an attack takes place in the wilderness, and suddenly your with main characters investigating the attack. Unlike The Monster, I feel The Oath stays strong in character development and story continuation, instead of becoming simply a stage for the theology that Peretti wishes to share. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Peretti, and a Christian, but the mastery of Peretti shows in this book in that he keeps the paradigm of the main character based in the non-believer mode. He also doesn't overload the reader with science and argument (which I feel is what happened in the Monster).The Oath is known as Peretti's best-seller and it stands to reason. It's filled with characters you care about, a hint of romance, but with it (the romance) the reality and ramifications of many romances on the big screen seem to never touch on. It's filled with thrill, suspense, and even a dark sinister plot line that many might find to be Stephen King-esque.And as Peretti mentions in his foreword (offered in the Kindle edition I received), sin's never been so real. As you read the book, and if you're a Christian, you're given great illustrations, and you'll find yourself nodding at each metaphor, "that's true." With the rest of the fandom, I have to ask, why isn't this a movie yet? Perhaps with the success of a few big-name Christian movies lately, it is my hope a good director will pick up the book and see its potential.

OMgoodness I love Frank Peretti and this book was another hit. His writing can be scary as heck to read sometimes but it speaks of real possibilities that can or are happening in our world. Makes you think. I feel at times he is almost prophesizing he is that good. Being a total Christian it makes you really relate to his writings! I had such a library of his books but they got destroyed by a storage unit that stored my belongs improperly. Over 98 % of all my belongings gone! So it will take some time to rebuild my library, but have to get a sofa before I can do that. I little at a time. :)

The Oath is a very long tale of fiction that continued the legacy of Frank Peretti as one of the most prolific Christian writers of our time. Having recently read Peretti's Monster, I must say that the two books parallel each other in many ways with several plot elements mirroring each other.I found myself tiring between revelations and being disappointed with the character qualities of some of his subjects. My major complaint, although it has to do with my taste and needs for reads to move along and make the point, is that Oath could have been shortened by a hundred pages without losing anything.Peretti used as his backdrop a very dark and evil little mining town with a terrible secret past. He mixed it with a preposterously unbelievable central focus that he masterfully made believable as well as acceptable. He then pitted good against evil, regenerate Christianity against a dark and dying segment of the world, and made the surrealistic elements of sin into black ooze that issued forth from the unregenerate human heart.Frank Peretti expertly employed allegory to teach a truth, preach a sermon on salvation, share a parable of the effects and reality of the power of sin, and bring into view the invisible effects of a black heart. He is a true Christian writer.Were it not for Peretti's highly developed wordsmithing skills, creative genius, fearless trek into the world of devils, I might have succumbed to the slow lumbering pace of plot development, the disappointing ups and downs of some of his characters, and what I thought was a disproportionate text to action ratio.It helps to have some knowledge of Saint George's Dragon, Herpetology, and then allow the master weaver of creature based fiction to carry you along on his fairytale-like pen thrusts.Oath is a very good read and a pictorially beautiful journey into the mountains. It is rewarding and in placed even a bit overwhelming to the faint at heart. There is violence, gruesome depictions of bad ways to die, and stomach turning visualizations of the rotting and overpowering caustic nature of sin that has been around just about as long as man has been.Sometimes, the reader finds him or herself having to accept biblical truths contained in Oath as a little child, just as they are put forth in Scripture. If this isn't the case, then evil will win, the devil will not flee from anyone, the cross has no real power over sin, we have no security or protection, and we certainly cannot wage war against the gates of hell.In a Peretti book, God is good, righteous, powerful, sovereign, and loving. The devil is bad, unrighteous, strong, hateful, and seemingly but not actually sovereign. Peretti never sells God short nor does he shy away from the true plan of salvation. That's why I have read most of his works and have been blessed by all of them.I recommend this book, but I caution the timid reader to be prepared for a rollercoaster ride through thrills, human weakness, some gore, and suffering and pain.I do believe Peretti has matured and has perfected his writing skills as he has put on a few years and produced more great works.
