This book is such a must have for any feminist. It is always my go-to source for information about sexual assault prevention, and I appreciated the fact that it discusses other topics like domestic violence, emotional abuse, and even STIs resulting from assault. A modern feminist classic. I'm just mad at myself I didn't order it and read it sooner.

The essays I found most engaging were those that examined how rape culture was derived using historical examples, that examined how it persists using present examples, and that pointed to intersections I hadn't thought of (or heard of) before, such as "When Pregnancy Is Outlawed, Only Outlaws Will Be Pregnant" by Tiloma Jayasinghe in which Jayasinghe drills down into a specific issue to demonstrate just one of the many ways in which our culture tries to control women's bodies. Another essay examined BDSM, female sexual submissives and how the elements of BDSM are misappropriated by mainstream pornography: "The Fantasy of Acceptable 'Non-Consent': Why the Female Sexual Submissive Scares Us (and Why She Shouldn't)" by Stacey May Fowles.Some reviewers found other essays more engaging than I did, which I believe is the strength of this book: that it has something to say to everyone who reads it, even if that "something" is different for every reader.

"Yes Means Yes" is quite a radical take on the idea of sexual consent - getting past the valuable, but very limited, concept of "No Means No" to a broader idea that sex should always involve the enthusiastic consent of all the parties involved.It's shocking that this is a radical idea - but, in a world where sexuality is far too often conceived of as "men as relentless pursuers and women as desireless gatekeepers" it is quite remarkable to see a vision of women as equal partners and independent actors in the context of their own sexuality.The book itself is composed of 28 essays by 30 contributors - two by coeditors Jessica Valenti and Jacklyn Friedman, with the other 26 by a variety of authors from all walks of life (the most prominent among the contributors being comedian Margaret Cho, who wrote the book's foreword).Each author wrote in his/her own voice, with extremely light, almost invisible, editing by Valenti and Freedman, which gave an interesting collaborative flavor to the book (while also making it somewhat hit or miss).By far, the strongest contributions were "What it feels like when it finally comes: surviving incest in real life" by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, "When sexual autonomy isn't enough: sexual violence against immigrant women in the United States" by Miriam Zoila Perez, "Trial by media: Black female lasciviousness and the question of consent" by Samhita Mukhopadhyay, "Why nice guys finish last" by Julia Serrano and "Who're you calling a whore?: a conversation with three sex workers on sexuality, empowerment and The Industry" by Susan Lopez, Mariko Passion and Saundra.The rest of the essays - while not rising to the level of those five contributions, were good pieces that got their points across.The book had only one weak and poorly written essay "Towards a performance model of sex" by Thomas Macaulay Millar, by far the weakest and most poorly written and thought out essay in an otherwise excellent book.On the whole, this is an outstanding work and I would recommend this book to anybody - especially to women - and it gives a new and unique perspective on sexuality.

Why I Think Boys May Enjoy ThisIf ever there was a book series that could be used to introduce the concept of “anti-hero” to a middle grade audience, it is Artemis Fowl (or, you know, my novella Anchihiiroo – Origin of an Antihero, but I digress). Artemis Fowl II, in the debut book of this series, is the very definition of someone willing to do anything it takes (even a little kidnapping and ransom-demanding) for what is ultimately a good cause (trying to save his mother). One of my favorite things about this series is that Artemis, being a genius, has a very large vocabulary. The diction in this book is a lot more advanced and complex than many other middle grade books and I personally used it as a benchmark in my own writing for not talking down to a young audience (which I find many, many middle grade and even young adult books do). Colfer has found that great sweet spot to challenge young readers without dismissing their capabilities.That being said, the story is a simple one that is very easy and fun to follow. The basic frame of the story follows the “heist” format. There are twists and turns and plans on top of plans. Sometimes they work and sometimes they fail. Sometimes they seem to fail but end up working (think of a fairy tale version of Ocean’s 11). Apparently Colfer himself has referred to it as “Die Hard with fairies” with which I can’t argue. Colfer has created his own sub-society of magical fairy creatures that presents the underlying mystery and magic to the series. At the same time, Artemis is a regular (well, as regular as a multi-millionaire genius pre-teen with a bit of an evil mastermind complex can be) human kid who breaks open the mysteries of this underworld.When I first discovered this series years ago, I was excited to find a middle grade series that had a protagonist that wasn’t your bubbly “chosen one” stereotype. Artemis, due to his intelligence and resources, is way deeper and more complex than your typical middle grade hero. That alone is worth a read. Couple that with a fun and colorful underworld full of faeries, gnomes, and other supernatural beings and it’s a can’t-miss.Content/AppropriatenessThis book is more than appropriate for the youngest of readers. Any violence is cartoonish in nature, for the most part. There are no language or sexual content concerns either.As the series goes on, there are points that get a little darker, but never does Colfer waver from the PG family friendly nature of this first book.As an aside: there is also a wonderful graphic novel adaptation of this first book that can serve to help a struggling reader or a reader who might need a little more visual aides (or just someone who really likes graphic novels!).Rating5/5 Giant Cartoon Mallets from Toonopolis, The Blog's Books for Boys Review

I actually enjoyed this off-beat little book more than I had expected, considering it has taken me years to getting back to reading it. I originally bought it for a defunct e-reader connected to another store--and I never finished reading it. I started over at the beginning, since it had been so long since I first sat down with it. This is an interesting, quick read. The pacing is pretty good. The story is quite funny and charming at times.I do wish there had been some formatting differences for the rather frequent point-of-view shifts. Sometimes there was no indicator, such as spacing, asterisks, a divider, etc. There was a lot of "gross-out" content. I really grew a little weary of the dwarf and his flapped trousers... For parents, there is a bit of light swearing consisting of mostly "damn" and "hell" (and a few made-up and implied explicitive phrases). Some may be concerned about the death of a rabbit at the hands of the flap-trousered dwarf.Overall, this was an entertaining read. I will likely be "back" for book two, once I've cleared up some of my Kindle slush-pile. I don't regret re-purchasing this in Kindle format, at least, it filled a few sessions of light reading for a few days.

I made it a third of the way through this drivel before calling it quits. I had no preconceptions about this beyond seeing that is had a Disney designation on the title page. (Kindle format) The main character should be Foul, not Fowl. Rotten genius of a boy, Artemis does not say he is looking for gold to cure his mother or find his father. He is looking to revive the coffers of a thieving family. I see Disneyworld thrown out there quite often, guess a plug for the outrageously overpriced theme park (Anyone pick up that Artemis is the genius (f)owl from Disney's The Sword In The Stone?) The characters are one dimentional, the story went all over the place. While I had no problems with the vocabulary, who exactly is the author targeting?I My last point, and this can be said of every aspect of Amazon reviews, from books to other products: If you like something a lot, give it a 5 star rating. Hate it? Give it one. I get not being able to change your mind and not able to fix it here, but if you just flat out rate a book wrong, you do a disservice to the author. I have this book two stars only because someone took the time to write and publish a book. The only 1's I door out to to poorly written and poorly edited books. No excuse for bad editing.

This is a great introduction to Sci-Fi for any kid in love with fantasy. Colfer mixes "real" magic with scientific advancements to create a race of creatures utterly and believably delightful. The snarky and pithy dialogue mixed with potty humor (e.g. a dwarf who eats and digests soil is constantly farting dirt missiles at would-be assailants) is sure to captivate the 9-12 age range of both genders. There is a redemptive quality of the book. There's really only one character (the main female role) that is entirely "good" but nearly every character has positive moral growth even with all the stealing, fighting and poor model behavior throughout.

I recently took my NBDHE and this book was very helpful to review for this important test! They have excellent quizzes at the end of each chapter that allow you to assess how much you know and has great info to go back in that chapter to review what you aren’t sure about!

Spent a good 10 minutes flipping through pages removing bookmark stickies from it, but other than the bottom right corner being kind of mangled, the book is in good shape for a used book.

I didn't end up using this at all! It was too much detail for me. I had a board review book that worked much better. I would return it if I still could. I never even used the code inside.

The book is very informative but I just cannot get behind the page organization. The pages have way too much information crammed into one spot. Also, the tables/graphs for one section is many times 1-3 pages later.If you have a choice, I would recommend Wilkins' textbooks.

***I was provided a copy of this by the publisher in exchange for an honest review***If you enjoy the tv series, you'll enjoy this comic. The art is very similar to the show. there are lots of colors and quite a few pages with so many details I found myself checking out what the background ponies were up to. The humor and dialogue is also very similar to the tv series.If you know a kid who loves the show, this would be a perfect way to introduce them to comic books! I'll give this graphic novel a 3/5, but that's only because it is childish and light. But, that's what My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is all about, teaching lessons in a really fun way.

This Volume contains the the 4 separate comics that were sold a while ago spanning the whole Queen Chrysalis arc. Having never had a chance to purchase or read any of them this was a great opportunity to do so. At it's current price of about $10 it's a great deal and even at regular price having all the chapters in one volume is extremely convenient. Highly recommend to those that are fans of the series.

Okay, I will admit it. Braces self and admits the truth, I am a fan of the show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Yes, that's right.... I'm a brony (male Pony fan). So what? I'm being facetious with the melodramatic embarrassment, but that is to introduce this topic. I love this show, because it is actually really good. It has plot lines that children can enjoy, with depth, characterization, jokes, references that adults can like as well. All of the above is because Lauren Faust, when originally tasked to created the newest generation of My Little Pony set out to make this newest iteration of the franchise one that both parents AND kids will want to watch.Anyone who has paid attention at all to the number of comics and manga I have read know that I love those genres. As a fan of the show, I was pleased to hear that they had started releasing comics that are part of the same continuity as the show.My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Vol. 1 is a really fun adventure. The plot is simple enough, in that the evil Queen Chrysalis of the Changelings has returned to set up a trap for Twilight Sparkle and the rest of the Mane 6 (Fluttershy, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, and Apple Jack). Though simple, the plot is actually pretty clever, in that it is well-thought out, and one that the characters all know is a trap that they have to walk into, because Chrysalis has forced their hands that effectively. But the trap at the end is not the only trick the evil Queen has up her sleeve. The trek to her kingdom is fraught with peril, and they will need all of their wits to make it through.The main draw for me is not the over-arching story. As I said, it is quite clever, though simple, so it is worth a read itself, though the end is a tad spoiled by seeming like a complete Deus ex Machina. That is the only real criticism I can come up with here, though. For me, however, the draw is the characterization and the way the story is told. The book is filled with shout-outs and clever and funny references to everything from horror movies like The Shining, to works such as The Phantom of the Opera, and characters from The Lord of the Rings and Transformers, among others. And the comedy and the interactions of the characters are hilarious. This is not some lame kiddie-story.At the end, there is the lesson learned and the good guys winning, and it is a tad more explicit than I liked, but that was only about three pages worth of panels. The rest of the book was written with subtlety and wit. There was a great section at the end where they had a short mini-comic that seemed to be half filling in plot holes, and half a Western comic book take on the Yonkoma sections in Japanese manga.This was a really great comic that I am sure both fans, and non-fans, of the current MLP franchise will enjoy.

I bought these for my 9 year old daughter and she absolutely loves these books! She makes an effort of getting through the whole book as soon as they arrive. The stories are great and the art is amazing to look at. As an added bonus to this series of books, the last few pages in the back of the book is full of beautiful artwork. This is a must have if you love my little pony and cant wait to read more about their adventures.

First off, this story arc is darker than the TV show is. This is partially down to the writers attempting to prove how sinister and sociopathic the villain is (Queen Chrysalis from the Season 2 series finale of the TV show). There's a few cells in here that might scare or upset very young or sensitive readers; this comic series was intended to appeal to and was written for older audiences anyway.For this introduction to the comic series, they've done a fantastic job. The artwork is great, vastly detailed and overflowing with pop culture references for those who take the time to look for it. The story line's amusing and you get a bonus "art gallery" at the end (it's essentially a collection of comic book covers that were featured on the front of the comics that this book includes).

As an avid My Little Pony fan, I was excited to finally read this comic in it's entirety. Ladies and Gentlecolts, you will not be disappointed! A engrossing storyline featuring our sinister Queen Chrysalis in an adventure that our mane six have never done before captures your attention and pulls you along for the ride. This is something thats believable and I can see it becoming part of the television show. However, this comic explores darker themes that might be disturbing for some children and parents. The art is exciting and detailed, so detailed that it can be a bit scary for younger readers as well (for instance Chrysalis' teeth are in plain sight in all it's pointy glory). As a adult reader I found it really enjoyable, it really appeals to people from different age groups.This collection contains the first four comics (that together creates a complete story - which includes all the issues cover art as well). My only complaint was I wish the art was farther away from the crease, I found myself stretching my book a little to uncover more of the panels, which I really didn't want to do. Nonetheless this is a must have for any fan, young or old. I will be buying Vol. 2 when it comes out in a few months!

Okay, although I am a comic book fan, I probably would never have read this if my kids had not been interested. But I read it. And I laughed. It was actually very funny with many subtle jokes that probably appeal more to older children and adults. The illustration is great, and it's something you can probably go back and read a few times. However, if you don't know anything about the ponies of Ponyville, you may need to learn a bit about their characters before reading this.

This is the book I wish I had when I started collecting autographs. Rutter breaks down the hobby into simple steps anyone can use, through the eyes of a veteran collector.In this book, he gives the reader examples from his years of collecting, tips for what to do - and what not to do! For example, don't take that amazing in-person autograph and tape it to the wall near an open window, as he did.Every person has their own interest or genre. For Rutter, it's primarily sports (baseball and football) and actors. Even if your interest is something outside of that, you'll learn important things like how to store your collection, how to display your treasured pieces without damaging them, and why quality matters over quantity.For collecting through the mail (TTM), you'll discover sources for addresses, as well as guidance on letter-writing, the best kinds of things to send, and ways to tell if your response is a preprint, autopen, or human-signed.There are chapters devoted to international collecting, complete with postage (very important!) and a full glossary of terms I've seen used, but never knew what they meant. For example, CISP is a color photograph that has not only been signed, but personally dedicated to its recipient. I'd never heard of a "hot pack" yet when I checked a popular auction site, there were hundreds listed.There was one particular section that had me stuck. As someone who wasn't sure where to start with TTM anything, I picked up this book and found it really well done. Troy gives great practical experience - everything from how to mail the item, how to find addresses to mail to (websites, free or paid address listings) as well as how to spot autopoen (fakes)... before this book, I didn't even know what autopen was! The section on autopen is really worth it if you're interested in spotting fakes.I also liked his creative ideas on how to get items to sign (printing images, etc.) There's a lot of great info in this work that really got me thinking about getting TTM autographs. For those interested in the monetary aspects, the subject of valuation and how it can be a tricky thing is also raised. He has some great experiences on the subject of value and certification authorities.Troy has a lot of great advice and it dawned on me in the reading, that when I was about 8 years old my parents helped me do something like t his... I wrote Charles M. Schulz (Peanuts/Snoopy creator) and he wrote me back a letter from him and "snoopy," which had his signature and a paw print of snoopy... too bad I didn't keep it.

For years I've been collecting autographs on a causal basis. I like to have signed items mostly from writers and comic book artists, although I also tried to collect the signatures of Nobel Prize-winning physicists for a while. Usually this collection habit of mine was hit or miss; if I knew I would be present at the same event as someone whose signature I wanted to collect, I would bring an item along and hope for the best.Troy Rutter's book has opened up to me the world of collecting autographs in another way though: by mail. It never would have occurred to me to try to collect signatures through the mail. The book is pitched at the beginner, going into all sorts of important details on how to begin a collection, how to mail people so you'll get a good response, and how to display a collection. The author even provides a list of addresses in the back of the book for reaching out to sports figures and actors. If I were to have one nitpick, it would be that I wish the book addressed the question of collecting the signatures of authors in books, as that tends to be the bulk of my collection. However, as I already know the ins and outs of how to get such signatures by mail, I didn't really mind the omission.If you have any interest at all in collecting autographs by mail, this is the one book you need. I highly recommend it.
