This was technically a re-read for me, but since the first time I read this book was in seventh grade (that's about six years ago) it was like reading it for the first time. The only thing I remembered was that I liked it a lot, and that the satyrs were funny. Neither of those facts changed.Fablehaven is about Kendra and Seth, a brother and sister who go to stay part of the summer with their rather reclusive grandfather (they're grandmother is mysteriously absent). While there they discover that not all is what it seems and that they're grandparents run a place called Fablehaven- a haven for the magical creatures. Very few things there are safe, and Kendra and Seth have a lot to learn if they're ever going to be the caretakers.This is one of those books I think everyone should read. I know it's a middle grade book, but like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson it is just as enjoyable for older readers. For one, it doesn't "talk down" to the readers. It treats everyone like a knowledgable reader and the mystery and plot have enough twists and turns for anyone to enjoy. It kept me on the edge of my seat. It also completely transported me to the world of Fablehaven, and the setting was so pervasive I found myself daydreaming about it in my spare time.A major plus for this book was the two main characters. While Kendra is the protagonist for most of the story, Seth does get a bit of spotlight. They're both super realistic, actually acting their age (she's in eighth grade, he's in sixth) in many ways without being too immature. I will admit that Seth did become a bit annoying, since he causes quite a few problems, but I'm fairly certain this will allow readers to really watch him grow up over the course of the series. The best part about them was their relationship- they acted like real siblings! I cannot count the number of times I've found a sibling relationship to so closely mirror the one I have with my brother. It was so refreshing to see the regular bickering and teasing without making either of them seem like a brat. It also allowed me to connect a ton with Kendra, who's a very likable heroine.So I'd definitely recommend this to everyone. It's perfect for fans of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, for sure. It's really just one of the best middle grade novels I've read in a while, and I can't wait to read many, many more in this series (which has, thankfully, been completed so I won't have to wait between novels).

Kendra and Seth must spend a week with their grandparents when Mom and Dad are called away unexpectedly. They do not know these grandparents very well and the kids are beyond annoyed that they are being left with them. The house is beautiful and the yard is amazing, but there is something strange about this place. The kids learn that they are spending this week on one of the most important preserves for magical creatures and their grandfather is the caretaker. In the woods beyond the yard live creatures great and small, good and evil. After a series of dangerous events, Kendra and Seth need to take chances on which creatures they can trust to help them while avoiding those that will hurt them.I absolutely love to drift off into a world of young-adult, fantasy fiction from time to time. They are the perfect remedy after a long, drawn-out read. It is hard to find a series that has a good balance of worthwhile writing and youthful creativity. I was directed to Fablehaven awhile back, but had my doubts. Once I finally got started, I flew through the book and was entertained throughout (I did take one exception with the constant and blatant disregard for authority from Seth, but I see it was necessary to move the story along). I am excited about this magical world created by Brandon Mull. I do not like to read any series back-to-back, but I look forward to reading book 2 soon.

Fablehaven is one of my favorite fantasy series and as such I was eager to take a look at this activity book related to the series. The book does not disappoint. The book is full of secret codes, recipes to try out, and your own preserve to create. Readers who enjoy interactive books that inspire imaginative play are bound to enjoy this book. Writing, drawing, coloring, designing, and word games punctuate this fun book. Hours of creative enjoyment are contained in this book. The sheer variety of different activities and games makes this a great book for both individual and group activities. One could even use the book to set up a Fablehaven party to celebrate the series or the upcoming sequel series that comes out in March 2017. If you have a Fablehaven lover in your house, this book is a must.

This book was one of my favorite books. The author is Brandon Mull. If you have ever read any of his other series you will love this one😃!I would have given it a 4 ½ star rating if that was how this was set up. My least favorite part was that the cover looks different than the scene in the book that it comes from.I did say that I liked it though, and I do. It was funny and explains Kendra and Seth’s relationship as sister and brother really well👍. It was fun to find all of the little connections to the Five Kingdoms.I recommend that you read his series in the order of Beyonders, Five Kingdoms, Fablehaven, then Dragonwatch to fully appreciate the connections. Also, after reading Fablehaven(book 1) flip to the back of the last page and scan over it😉. I’d say the funniest thing in the book was when they had to give a cave troll a massage in exchange for information, and I’d better not say what the most exciting part is😏.I would recommend this book to anyone who likes mythical creatures, adventures, thrilling tales, mysteries, or, as I already said, other series by Brandon Mull.

A recent book by Preston Lauterbach, "The Chitlin' Circuit and the Road to Rock N Roll",which describes the small, frequently out-of-the-way clubs in the South in which African American blues singers performed past the middle of the 20th Century, led me to revisit one of my favorite singers, Bobby "Blue" Bland. Bland spent much of his career performing tirelessly on the Chitlin' Circuit. Charles Farley's new book, "Soul of the Man" (2011) is the first full-length biography of Bland, a figure who richly deserves to be written about and to be heard. Farley's book is based upon extensive research and interviews even though Bland himself declined to be interviewed for the book. The essence of "The Man", as Bland is known, and his music still come through. The University of Mississippi Press published this biography as part of its "American Made Music" series.The portrayal of Bland that the book offers is of a person who found early what he needed to do with his life and who did it. The Man had, it appears, only one large talent -- singing and projecting a song -- and that he did extraordinarily well. Born in 1930 in rural Tennessee, Bland and his mother moved to Memphis when he was fifteen. He quickly fell in which a group of fledgling young musicians on the fabled Beale Street, including Bland's lifelong friend, B.B. King. Bland had only a third grade education, at best, and until nearly mid-life was illiterate. He struggled and made some early records before being drafted into the army from which he was released in 1955.Bland was contracted to Don Robey, the powerfully shady African American record producer in Houston, and after his time in the Army Bland relocated to Houston to resume his career under Robey's tutelage. He played on the road with Junior Parker for five years and then on his own. During the 1950s' and early 60' Bland made a series of now classic recordings with the big band sound of his arranger, Joe Scott. He recorded for Robey until the early 1970's, experimented with his styles, and continues to sing up to the present day when he is well past 80. During much of his career, Bland performed 300 shows per year on the road, moving from place to place on the Chitlin' Circuit. It was a grueling, harsh life, in many ways, filled with women and alcohol. Bland was able to conquer his alcoholism by the mid-1970s.Bland does not play an instrument and throughout his career relied on other people to manage his shows. He concentrated solely upon his irreplaceable talent of singing. Although many of his recordings "crossed-over" to a mainstream white audience, Bland did not achieve the success of some other blues artists of the era. Farley attributes this failure to Bland's association with Robey. Recognition can be fleeting, and Farley finds convincingly that there can be no question about Bland's stature as an artist.Farley begins with Bland's life when he moved to Memphis, then doubles back to his early rural childhood which was heavily influenced by gospel and country music before it returns to a chronological narrative. In Chapter 8, "Stormy Monday Blues" Farley offers an unforgettable description of a Bland performance in a middle-class African American nightclub in Kansas City in 1963. The book gives detailed descriptions of Bland's recordings and albums on almost a song-by-song basis. His discussions of Bland songs such as "Turn on Your Lovelight", "Further Up the Road", "Call on Me" and the later song "Members Only" made me rush to hear these and other songs again for myself. Farley captures the life of a blues musician on Beale Street in the late 1940's and in the small clubs that Bland played for many years. He gives good biographical information on the many musicians that Bland played with over the years. Bland is portrayed as a shy, reserved man from rural Tennessee devoted in full to the one thing he had determined to do. I thought I knew something about The Man when I finished this book, in the sense that he and his music were one.The book is filled with Farley's own observations, and those of others, about Bland and his music, including Bland's own statements in interviews from over the years. For example, after discussing the many musical influences on Bland, Farley writes (p. 82)"The resulting Bobby Bland sound, however, transcends these many influences and becomes more than the sum of its musical parts. Not exactly gospel, not traditional blues, not stylized ballads, but more of an amalgamative understanding of not just the lyrics, but of a deeper, visceral meaning that is coming from somewhere far inside the singer. In the end, they lyrics -- often meaningful, but just as often banal -- are not that important to the end product; it is instead the feeling that Bobby exudes from his own experiences, from too many cigarettes, late nights, liquor, and loves lost and found that listeners respond and become addicted to."And here is an eloquent summation paragraph from late in Farley's book (p. 258)"The shy boy who grew up as a lonely only child in rural Tennessee, who learned to sing the blues by listening to the jukebox in his mother's diner and to his friends on Beale Street, who gained a bit of much-needed swagger in the U.S. Army, who later signed a record contract and worked for a notorious Texas hustler who matched him with one of the best R&B writers, who went on to R&B stardom and constant entertaining: like many postwar African American men, Bobby Bland somehow overcame the hardships, and the many obstacles -- economical, social, and racial -- and endured, survived, and prevailed."I learned a great deal from this book and was inspired by Bland's determination and lifelong devotion to his art. So much feeling went into every word and his band was first rate..I was privileged to see him "live" in the Sixties....FANTASTIC!This book was long overdue, it pays homage to an American treasure, may he live many more years! Well researched and written, I recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading about a great singer!

Wonderful book. You get to know the real Bobby Blue Bland

This book was amazing because it is the only one I have found about this man with the amazing voice. Although it appears that it was unauthorized and mostly information gathered from others; it was still interesting. Right now this book and his music is all that is left. May he RIP.

Anything about Bobby Blue Bland is great to read and listen to. He has been a great performer all of my life, I remember listening WDIA. The first record I receive was " Aint Nothing you can do". One of the best record he made was "Two step from the blues", it is sad but it is great.

I have been waiting for sometime for this book to come out and it has lived up to my expectations. It is a lively read packed with information about who played with Bobby and when, his songs and how they were developed, his recording career and his live performances. Maybe there could have been a bit more about the man himself but overall if you are interested in his brilliant career over the past (sixty!) years it is an essential read.

Grace Lin does an incredible job of enchanting readers with stories that also teach about Chinese legend and customs.At least in the books I’ve read (this series and Where the Mountain Meets the Moon), Lin tells the main story with short stories/legends interspersed. They are very short, so the reader doesn’t lose track of the main plot.I’ve read both serieses aloud with fourth graders, and they’ve loved them. I love to start a series in small group rotations and then offer the rest of the series for the kids to read. I’ve had kids finish the rest of the series on their own.

We're huge fans of Grace Lin's work in this European-American family. "Where the Mountain Meets the Moon" and "Starry River of the Sky" we loved so much that I read them before bedtime TWICE each. The words flow beautifully, the stories are wonderful... and this book is almost as good--which means it's fantastic.

This was a fun read for my third grader, who loved learning about Pacy's culture. The story was well written and engaging, and very relatable for my child. I highly recommend this book.

As a Taiwanese American reading this book. I loved it. There were so many ways that I could relate to Pacy growing up in suburban America. "You couldn't be Dorothy. You're Chinese. Dorothy's not Chinese." The chapters were short and easy to read for my 6 y.o.

Bought this for my Asian daughter who lives in Canada and refuses to recognize her Chinese roots. She loved the book and actually related to the girl in the story, and started asking about some of the traditions she read about and seeing some we practice. This is a good peek into the culture.

My daughter (9) and I very much enjoyed reading this novel together.

My daughter is almost 9. She enjoyed this book. Pacy, the main character, is on a quest to find herself: Is she Chinese-American? Taiwanese-American? Or just American? To her American friends at school her Chinese culture is distinctly different, so much so, that one little girl insensitively tells her she can't play Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz because Dorothy is not Chinese.To Chinese girls, she is not authentically Chinese because she doesn't speak the language; they leave her out, telling her she is "Americanized" or as one girl rudely calls her: "A Twinkie, yellow on the outside, white on the inside."But the book is more than just the dilemma I mention here. It's a great read, and the book ends on a high note.

Who doesn’t love a war hero. Selfless acts of kindness and bravery, who would love Gabriel. Great characters, good plot. I’ll need to read the other Winter brothers stories now.

I will say that the premise of this book had promised. I did want to like it and overall it wasn't bad. However, there was only one review and it was a five-star. This is not a 5-star book. Spoilers coming.This books need some minor editing. I found some extra letters, extra words, and misspellings. But the biggest issue was consistency and continuity. One minute, Scarlett decides to take a bus, the next minute she's pulling into the driveway in her car. In another scene she had finished playing the piano and was making a cup of hot chocolate but then when you saw the same time frame from another perspective, she's still at the piano bench.Overall, the one of the largest issues I had with the storyline is that 1, this man who was 25 on one page and 26 on the other approached an 18 year old that was still in high school about marriage. I do not understand if it was a marriage of convenience why he did not go to her mother.. but somehow, after literally spending 30 minutes together at a funeral, and an hour or so together at their civil union, Scarlett was in love for 4 years. And then all of a sudden Gabriel is in love also. These people have not even spoken to each other in 4 years and yet all of these strong emotions were there. Additionally the entire scene where she is being a temptress and using language and body motions, did not fit in line with who she was. And really, for Brad to show up so conveniently, was a bit much.I think that the author has promised but, This was just not a really good book

Another great book to this series Simone Rivers!!! Although, as a reader's I would have preferred the novels to be in order. This was so unorganized that I had to piece together which book should be first. Gabriel and Scarlett romance began from a obligation to a falling brother. It soon developed into true love but they both was inexperienced with the concept that they didn't know how to approach the subject. In the end they both find what they were both wanted which is each other. I will be recommending this series to everyone I know!!!!

This is not only the beginning of a wonderful and intriguing series. And it will have wanting to see more and more of the Winters men. This book not only have a strong storyline, the characters chemistries are so well written, that you can't help but to feel there love for each other. This is an awesome salute to all those that serve in the military, and their families who sacrifice for the rest of us. Any opinions expressed within this review are solely and uniquely made by me and I am happily leaving this review.

Not a bad book. Fast paced love story. This also depicts (from my point of view) that the heroine was the Alpha of this book. She knew she wanted Gabe so she refused to allow him to wallow in self pity.All in all this was an interesting book and I look forward to other works from this author

I read this book in one setting. I love a good military love story. Gabriel and Scarlett were kindred spirits that met through tragedy, but was able to finally come together and recognize the love that they both had for each.

Gabriel Winters, a wounded warrior is determined to carry on the caring of the family of his fallen fellow brother in arms, Richard. He meets for the first time, Richard's family. He's smitten by Scarlet and makes a decision which he hopes will change everyone's life for the better. Scarlet is drawn to him but is cautious.

I like how Gabriel felt obligated to help Richard's family in his death since he didn't want to take a handout when he was alive. Gabriel and Scarlet was attracted to each other when they met and it was good that Gabriel's attraction let him to her job to ward off Scarlet's attack. I'm glad they got things together in the end.

Adorable! Very cute ideas for decorating music boxes. It was published in 1979, but music boxes I've seen online look similar. Maybe minor adjustments could be made. Ms Greenhowe's constructions are fairly elaborate. I've made a few from other of her books and they come out nicely but require a lot of attention to detail.

I have a large collection of Jean Greenhowe's knitted dolls books. This is the first time I've bought a secondhand book of her miniture figures, it was printed in 1979. It arrived in very good condition. The pages are slightly yellowed from age and a slight musty smell but in very good clean condition.The figures in this book are old fashioned and I love them especially the maidens going round the May Pole which is pictured at the back in colour. There aren't many coloured pictures, most of it is in black and white. You can trace the patterns from the book to make these lovely creations.I'm posting a picture taken of the back cover, I like it better than the one on the front.

Wonderful little music boxes! Takes you from the very first step, to perfect finish! Includes how to make the dolls and the fully functional music box to put them on! Very pleased with this book!

Starts with a drawing of her room, then her house, and continues to expand larger and larger until its the entire world... then you go back down through the maps to find her home again. Perfect introduction for toddlers and would jump into a project of drawing maps of their rooms and homes and even their streets.

My 4 year old really enjoys this book! We recently bought our first house so it's been great for her to compare the kid in the story to her own room/house/neighborhood/town :) It has also opened up conversations such as the different types of animals that live on each continent and where various family members live within our state & country. I feel like she's really learning from the book and will continue to enjoy it as she gets older!

Whoever said this is for elementary school children was incorrect. This has one sentence per page and has very little to say - you could do this yourself without buying a book. Returned it.
