Grace Lin does an incredible job of enchanting readers with stories that also teach about Chinese legend and customs. At least in the books I’ve read (this series and Where the Mountain Meets the Moon), Lin tells the main story with short stories/legends interspersed. They are very short, so the reader doesn’t lose track of the main plot.I’ve read both serieses aloud with fourth graders, and they’ve loved them. I love to start a series in small group rotations and then offer the rest of the series for the kids to read. I’ve had kids finish the rest of the series on their own.

We're huge fans of Grace Lin's work in this European-American family. "Where the Mountain Meets the Moon" and "Starry River of the Sky" we loved so much that I read them before bedtime TWICE each. The words flow beautifully, the stories are wonderful... and this book is almost as good--which means it's fantastic.

This was a fun read for my third grader, who loved learning about Pacy's culture. The story was well written and engaging, and very relatable for my child. I highly recommend this book.

As a Taiwanese American reading this book. I loved it. There were so many ways that I could relate to Pacy growing up in suburban America. "You couldn't be Dorothy. You're Chinese. Dorothy's not Chinese." The chapters were short and easy to read for my 6 y.o.

Bought this for my Asian daughter who lives in Canada and refuses to recognize her Chinese roots. She loved the book and actually related to the girl in the story, and started asking about some of the traditions she read about and seeing some we practice. This is a good peek into the culture.

My daughter (9) and I very much enjoyed reading this novel together.

My daughter is almost 9. She enjoyed this book. Pacy, the main character, is on a quest to find herself: Is she Chinese-American? Taiwanese-American? Or just American? To her American friends at school her Chinese culture is distinctly different, so much so, that one little girl insensitively tells her she can't play Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz because Dorothy is not Chinese. To Chinese girls, she is not authentically Chinese because she doesn't speak the language; they leave her out, telling her she is "Americanized" or as one girl rudely calls her: "A Twinkie, yellow on the outside, white on the inside."But the book is more than just the dilemma I mention here. It's a great read, and the book ends on a high note.

love it. great paperback condition.

Who doesn’t love a war hero. Selfless acts of kindness and bravery, who would love Gabriel. Great characters, good plot. I’ll need to read the other Winter brothers stories now.

I will say that the premise of this book had promised. I did want to like it and overall it wasn't bad. However, there was only one review and it was a five-star. This is not a 5-star book. Spoilers coming. This books need some minor editing. I found some extra letters, extra words, and misspellings. But the biggest issue was consistency and continuity. One minute, Scarlett decides to take a bus, the next minute she's pulling into the driveway in her car. In another scene she had finished playing the piano and was making a cup of hot chocolate but then when you saw the same time frame from another perspective, she's still at the piano bench.Overall, the one of the largest issues I had with the storyline is that 1, this man who was 25 on one page and 26 on the other approached an 18 year old that was still in high school about marriage. I do not understand if it was a marriage of convenience why he did not go to her mother.. but somehow, after literally spending 30 minutes together at a funeral, and an hour or so together at their civil union, Scarlett was in love for 4 years. And then all of a sudden Gabriel is in love also. These people have not even spoken to each other in 4 years and yet all of these strong emotions were there. Additionally the entire scene where she is being a temptress and using language and body motions, did not fit in line with who she was. And really, for Brad to show up so conveniently, was a bit much.I think that the author has promised but, This was just not a really good book

Another great book to this series Simone Rivers!!! Although, as a reader's I would have preferred the novels to be in order. This was so unorganized that I had to piece together which book should be first. Gabriel and Scarlett romance began from a obligation to a falling brother. It soon developed into true love but they both was inexperienced with the concept that they didn't know how to approach the subject. In the end they both find what they were both wanted which is each other. I will be recommending this series to everyone I know!!!!

This is not only the beginning of a wonderful and intriguing series. And it will have wanting to see more and more of the Winters men. This book not only have a strong storyline, the characters chemistries are so well written, that you can't help but to feel there love for each other. This is an awesome salute to all those that serve in the military, and their families who sacrifice for the rest of us. Any opinions expressed within this review are solely and uniquely made by me and I am happily leaving this review.

Not a bad book. Fast paced love story. This also depicts (from my point of view) that the heroine was the Alpha of this book. She knew she wanted Gabe so she refused to allow him to wallow in self pity. All in all this was an interesting book and I look forward to other works from this author

I read this book in one setting. I love a good military love story. Gabriel and Scarlett were kindred spirits that met through tragedy, but was able to finally come together and recognize the love that they both had for each.

Gabriel Winters, a wounded warrior is determined to carry on the caring of the family of his fallen fellow brother in arms, Richard. He meets for the first time, Richard's family. He's smitten by Scarlet and makes a decision which he hopes will change everyone's life for the better. Scarlet is drawn to him but is cautious.

I like how Gabriel felt obligated to help Richard's family in his death since he didn't want to take a handout when he was alive. Gabriel and Scarlet was attracted to each other when they met and it was good that Gabriel's attraction let him to her job to ward off Scarlet's attack. I'm glad they got things together in the end.

Adorable! Very cute ideas for decorating music boxes. It was published in 1979, but music boxes I've seen online look similar. Maybe minor adjustments could be made. Ms Greenhowe's constructions are fairly elaborate. I've made a few from other of her books and they come out nicely but require a lot of attention to detail.

I have a large collection of Jean Greenhowe's knitted dolls books. This is the first time I've bought a secondhand book of her miniture figures, it was printed in 1979. It arrived in very good condition. The pages are slightly yellowed from age and a slight musty smell but in very good clean condition. The figures in this book are old fashioned and I love them especially the maidens going round the May Pole which is pictured at the back in colour. There aren't many coloured pictures, most of it is in black and white. You can trace the patterns from the book to make these lovely creations.I'm posting a picture taken of the back cover, I like it better than the one on the front.

Wonderful little music boxes! Takes you from the very first step, to perfect finish! Includes how to make the dolls and the fully functional music box to put them on! Very pleased with this book!

The book's content is great. Unfortunately we have received a copy where several pages are duplicated within it, and are placed at random spots in the book. It inhibits any flow to reading the book to my children and them observing the information

This book helped my 4 yr. old granddaughter to get a better grasp of where we are in relation to the world. She enjoyed it but she is still a bit young to totally grasp the concept. I will continue reading it from time to time as she can better understand it. I would think it is perfect for a 5-7 yr. old.It is colorful, with great pictures and does a great job of beginning in the child's room and eventually finding her place in the world.

lustrated in full color, Me on The Map takes a approach on explaining maps in a abstract way. In full color and in a playful way, Me on The Map first introduces you to maps and geography, step by simple creatively simple step. How you ask? A young girl shows readers first shows readers a drawn map of her room done in crayon, than her house on the map of the street, all the way to her country on a map of the world. The young girl demonstrates to readers how they can find their own country, state, and town all the way back to their own backroom, each in a wonderful colorful map. With easy to read text and bright artwork it will have children eager to help navigate the next vacation, maybe Christmas or new years? You know how many different types of maps there are? As you are reading the book, Sweeney simplifies the nature of the maps to help them more easily to understand, and inspires the cartographer in every child. Inspiring anyone who reads wanting to give a try at making their own map if only just for fun to see just where it might lead them even if it’s just out your own front door cause every step is an adventure and a new lesson to learn.Do you know a different type of map that one time early before ships had navigation; the captains had to read the stars to navigate the ship to its destination to different countries around the earth all over the globe. What is the purpose the author writes in Me On The Map? It seems to me the author is trying to show the reader how fun and easy it is to read and make a map. As you read Me On The Map, have you decided what kind of map would be the most useful? Take a read and find out and enjoy and see where the adventure may take you.Artist Cable's clear, decisive renderings show a wealth of detail on the scenic illustrations, while her creative progression of maps includes handmade examples, a souvenir state map, an elementary classroom map of the country and, finally, a "flat" map of the world. One that kids will enjoy replicating.

This is an excellent way to introduce mapping to young children. I've used it successfully with children ages 4-8 and it's never failed. I love the way that it starts with the child and then moves to the child's room, their house, their street, town, state, country and world. It has a nice message about how everyone fits on the map.

Starts with a drawing of her room, then her house, and continues to expand larger and larger until its the entire world... then you go back down through the maps to find her home again. Perfect introduction for toddlers and would jump into a project of drawing maps of their rooms and homes and even their streets.

My 4 year old really enjoys this book! We recently bought our first house so it's been great for her to compare the kid in the story to her own room/house/neighborhood/town :) It has also opened up conversations such as the different types of animals that live on each continent and where various family members live within our state & country. I feel like she's really learning from the book and will continue to enjoy it as she gets older!

Whoever said this is for elementary school children was incorrect. This has one sentence per page and has very little to say - you could do this yourself without buying a book. Returned it.

This book is awesome for explaining to young children about their place in the world, and even introducing our solar system. The text is very simple and it gets the point across. There are other books that try to do the same thing, but they are too complicated for preschoolers and the message gets lost. This book is my favorite!

Beyond the Great Wall, by Jeffrey Alford

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Alford and Duguid, authors of the acclaimed Mangoes & Curry Leaves, explore the food and peoples of the outlaying regions of present-day China, historically home to those not ethnically Chinese. Part travel guide and part cookbook, this collection looks at the cultural survival and preservation of food in smaller societies including that of the Tibetan, Mongol, Tuvan and Kirghiz peoples, among others. The authors include vivid color photographs of food, people and places of cultural significance. Recipes are tantalizing and mostly simple, and ingredients are surprisingly easy to find. The book is sectioned by food type rather than ethnicity, covering everything from condiments and seasonings to fish and meats to drinks and sweets. Dishes have the hint of the familiar, such as Oasis Chicken Kebabs, Tibetan Pork and Spinach Stir-Fry, and Market Stall Fresh Tomato Salsa, while others are less common but equally tempting, including Kazakh Pulao, Steamed Tibetan Momos, and Home-style Tajik Nan. Peppered throughout are the authors' personal stories, which provide insight into each culture. A handsome and engaging collection suitable for travelers and cooks alike, this book will delight anyone with an interest in this part of the world. From the Inside Flap

In the West, when we think about food in China, what usually comes to mind are the signature dishes of Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai. But beyond these urbanized eastern areas lies the other China: the high open spaces and sacred places of Tibet, the Silk Road oases of Xinjiang and Qinghai, the steppelands of Inner Mongolia, and the steeply terraced hills of Yunnan and Guizhou. The people who live in these regions—Tibetans, Mongols, Uighurs, Iiao, Hui, Dong, Yi, Da, and others—are culturally distinct, with their own history and culinary traditions. In Beyond the Great Wall, Jeffrey Alford and Naomi Duguid—who met and fell in love as young travelers in Tibet—bring home the enticing flavors of these outlying areas of China. This eye-opening collection of magnificent photos, delectable home-style recipes, and inviting stories of people and places is a journey into a fascinating area of the world. China has gradually opened its more remote regions to foreign travel over the last twenty-five years. And in that period, Jeffrey and Naomi have traveled and eaten and photographed in mountain villages and border towns, in nomad yurts, in oases along the Silk Road, in local markets. They've tasted satisfying and delicious dishes at family meals and at small restaurants (that are in fact household kitchens putting out a menu). They've learned techniques from home cooks and market vendors: to shape noodles quickly and easily, to make warming family soups, easy stir-fries, succulent pulaos, and aromatic grilled kebabs.Food is so much a part of place, and this family-style food is extraordinarily good. Like the traditional regional cooking of rural France and Italy, it is comfort food, with direct flavors that speak to the heart and simple ingredients treated with respect. There are cumin-scented chicken kebabs; pea tendrils dressed with sesame oil and dark vinegar; lamb patties with chopped green herbs; slices of spice-rubbed roast pork; enticing salsas and condiments; and succulent noodles of many kinds, served in aromatic broth or dressed wth lively sauces. Some of this food comes from Central Asian culinary tradition, with its pulaos, flatbreads, and kebabs. Uighur nans and Tibetan momos remind us that the Indian Subcontinent is just across the Himalaya. Other dishes, especially those from the peoples of southern Yunnan and Guizhou, are close counsins of the Southeast Asian foods that Jeffrey and Naomi introduced us to in the influential Hot Sour Salty Sweet. These rich culinary cultures reflect not only layers of flavor, but also layers of history. Naomi and Jeffrey here document the traditions of the people living beyond the Great Wall at a time when these are threatened by the fast pace of change in modern China. And in Beyond the Great Wall the authors celebrate that other China, its diverse cultures, appealing food traditions, and vibrant daily life, with the passion and color it deserves—a must-have for every food lover, and an inspiration for home cooks and armchair travelers.

I first saw this book before traveling and living in China. The pictures are enthralling and beautiful, and I love the concept. Being a bit more familiar with the food after my travels around much of Sichuan (where I lived), Yunnan, Guangxi etc., I was hoping to get access and insight into some of my favorites. Unfortunately, many of these recipes are more educated guesses and slightly watered-down adaptations for less-intrepid travelers. And that's a fine intro, just not what I wanted. Also, perhaps since this book was researched, many of the "hard to find" ingredients for recipes that have admittedly been omitted, are now available or easily approximated with similar items, especially if you live near a Chinatown. There are also, with a bit of patience, some amazing bilingual bloggers all around Asia, so I'd probably track those down instead, if you know what you're looking for.

This is such a wonderful book, a joy to browse, and dip into a recipe or a travel story. The photography is breathtakingly beautiful, whether of people, landscapes, ingredients, oh, and yes, the food! More a work of anthropological cuisine than a mere cookbook, Beyond the Great Wall is a cultural and visual feast, a culinary travelogue that sweeps though the astounding variety of the outer, lesser-known areas of China.

This is a beautifully written book with amazing photography, it lives up to the standard that you would expect from Duguid and Alford. The recipes are authentic and the cultural commentary always educational and enjoyable to read.

My household likes to try different foods. Years ago, we were given "Hot Sour Salty Sweet" as a gift and have been enjoying recipes out of it ever since. My husband decided that he wanted a new cookbook and I saw that the authors had done this.... I read the reviews and decided to jump in; I am so glad that I did. We have been enjoying the food since the arrival of this new favorite cookbook. My six year old loves the Mongolian beef and has a great time with all of the dipping sauces. My husband and I are enjoying the mixture of flavors and spices. Fantastic book.

I lived "Beyond the Great Wall" for several years, and the cuisine there is phenomenal (and completely unlike what passes for "Chinese" food in the US). Was thrilled to get this book filled with my favorite recipes from western China. The photos and background info make this equal parts coffee table book and cookbook.

I have all of their books.......visually stunning, great recipes, as much a travel book as it is a cookbook !!.... and I'm a sucker for cookbooks anyway. Buy it !!

My son and daughter-in-law especially love Mongolia, and have traveled extensively in that country. They especially enjoy relationships with tribal people there and experiencing what ordinary people eat. So I ordered this as a Christmas gift for them and they absolutely loved it. I also scanned as much of the book as I had time for myself, and found the cultural stories relating to the recipes as fascinating as the descriptions of foods. It is truly a lovely book, either for 'foodies' or for amatuer cultural anthropologists.

An exceptional book on cultural foods of China with recipes, photographs, a look into cultural habits and customs. Well worth reading formany reasons... and the recipes work!

#129,061 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Edgar Allan Poe, by the time he wrote down the phrase “The fever called ‘Living’” – in his poem “For Annie” (1849) – was impoverished, in poor health, and desperately lonely, two years after the death of his beloved wife Virginia. The forty-year-old poet was also, though he could not have known it, in his last year of life; by the end of 1849, he would die, under mysterious circumstances and from unknown causes, in a Baltimore hospital. How fitting, then, that Paul Collins has taken the phrase "The Fever Called Living" and made it the subtitle of this brief Poe biography."Edgar Allan Poe: The Fever Called Living," with only 107 pages of text, is brief by design. Collins’s book is part of the "Icons" series of concise biographies published by New Harvest, an imprint of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Books published in the series so far include biographies of Jesus of Nazareth, Joseph Stalin, Lucian Freud, J.D. Salinger, Vincent Van Gogh, Alfred Hitchcock, Hannah Arendt, Paul of Tarsus, David Lynch, Benazir Bhutto, and of course Edgar Allan Poe – truly an eclectic list of icons. It is fortunate – and striking, considering the book’s status as part of a series called “Icons” – that Collins, a professor of English at Portland State University, takes the reader’s focus away from Poe as icon, and invites the reader to concentrate on Poe as a hard-working writer. This theme is emphasized right from the book’s beginning; Collins opens with the familiar though now-lapsed tradition of the “Poe Toaster’s” annual late-night visits to Poe’s Baltimore grave on the anniversary of Poe’s birth. But then Collins encourages us to ignore the colorful manifestations of EAP fan culture embodied by the Poe Toaster, “and instead watch the Baltimore Sun reporter taking notes from the perimeter. There, and not amid the weathered tombstones, is the reality of the living and working writer. Poe’s reputation was not earned through tragedy, but in spite of it: he was a careful craftsman of words, and a man whose deep dedication to understanding art is often obscured by the drama around his life” (p. 1).I like that focus and emphasis. Widespread awareness of the difficult circumstances of Poe’s life has no doubt done much to give Poe his, well, iconic status as an embodiment of the Romantic artist whose bleeding heart beats on through one tragedy after another. But Poe was a writer first and foremost, and one who produced some of the greatest American literature, in a variety of genres, under the most difficult circumstances imaginable. That part of Poe’s story is inspiring.Considering the brevity of "Edgar Allan Poe: The Fever Called Living," it is doubly impressive that Collins provides persuasive explanations for a number of the mysteries surrounding Poe’s life. When, for example, Collins considers biographers’ puzzlement at the odd scenario of Poe’s foster father John Allan sending the young Poe to the University of Virginia without sufficient funds to study there, Collins suggests that “It is hardly a mystery to any first-generation student. John Allan was an immigrant who never attended college; what he understood was business, secondary schools, and the occasional tutor fee….Of the time and money necessary for college, and its cultivation of sheer intellectual curiosity, he was ignorant” (p. 13).It is a sensible explanation; and that freshness of perspective marks many parts of this biography, as when Collins, looking at Poe’s time as an enlisted man in the United States Army, suggests that “the U.S. Army has the distinction of being the only institution to steadily support and appreciate the talents of Edgar Allan Poe while he was still alive” (p. 20).Collins takes particular care in tracing the development of Poe’s literary art. Poe’s early prose, Collins suggests, while following the sensationalist literary norms of his time, “still lacked a compelling narrator. In particular, a charismatic, manic first-person presence was needed to bring alive Poe’s use of dread and terrified sensation”, because, “though Poe could mock the form [of sensationalism], he hadn’t learned how to transcend it” (p. 25). In contrast, by the time of Poe’s failed verse drama "Politian" (1835), the young writer was learning from his prior mistakes: “With his genius at haunting narrators and an emerging commitment to plot structure, Poe now was growing closer to a mastery of his art” (p. 31).As mentioned above, Collins concentrates well on the practicalities of Poe’s life as a working author. Knowing the vagaries of a writing life – the book is dedicated to Dave Eggers, “who gave me my first break as a writer” – Collins looks at how Poe’s life choices affected his career. When it comes to Poe’s penchant for writing often savage reviews of the work of fellow authors, for instance, Collins writes that “The careers of the author and the reviewer mix with deceptive and dangerous ease. Reviews are quick but paltry money, distracting from the work that makes a writer’s reputation; they are transient in their effect on readers, but lasting in their damage to a writer’s professional relations” (p. 34). Similarly, aspiring writers who think they will make their first mark in short stories before going on to write The Great American Novel might benefit from Collins’s somber advice, in the context of publishers’ repeated rejections of Poe’s proposals of a volume of his short stories, that “authors receive precisely the same rejections from publishers even today. Short fiction sells poorly and is an extravagance barely tolerated even in established writers” (p. 35). So get back to work on that novel, alright? As any Poe biographer should do, Collins recognizes Poe’s singular achievements. Aptly, Collins describes Poe’s 1841 short story “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” the world’s first true mystery story in the modern sense, as “initiating the world’s most popular genre of fiction”, and therefore as “literally the most influential short story of the nineteenth century” (p. 49). And his later tale of ratiocination “The Purloined Letter” (1844), featuring as it did the same detective character of C. Auguste Dupin, arguably went even further in placing “deductive analysis and problem solving at the center” of the mystery story; “The Purloined Letter” illustrates how the appeal of the mystery genre lies not in bloodshed or violence, but rather in “the bringing of order to disorder, and causality to the seemingly inexplicable” (pp. 59-60)."Edgar Allan Poe: The Fever Called Living" is, as mentioned above, brief; indeed, I would hazard a surmise that authors writing for the Icons series are told very strictly what the word limit for books in this series is. But Collins tells Poe’s sad and compelling story in a concise and effective manner. Edgar Allan Poe may have conquered “the fever called ‘Living’” in 1849, but the literature he wrote has transcended the passage of time.

Curiously, a few days after I started reading this book, I took one of those crazy pointless tests that claimed to determine which writer from history I'd have liked the best. I laughed when it came up "Poe" because I have so many memories of reading his books at different times in my life. He himself would have enjoyed the story of how my dad caught me reading "The Tell Tale Heart" by flashlight under the covers at about ag3 10. My dad took the book away and ordered my mother to take it back to the public library. It was right when the investigators come to check out the details. I was FRENZIED to find out what happens...but didn't read the balance for more than a year (because I couldn't get my hands on the book!) I am LOVING Paul Collins' descriptive narrative of Poe's life and the colorful way he handles the details. He's a good writer, and he has a worthy subject.

Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most intriguing writers in American literature. His short life (he died at 40) was productive and inventive. He’s often credited with the invention of the detective story (i.e. “Murders in the Rue Morgue”), and was prolific as a writer of stories, poetry, and criticism. We know him for macabre tales like “Tell-Tale Heart” and the poem, “The Raven.” Few authors invoke such a benighted image.Yet the popular image of Poe is a bit of a dark caricature, reflecting truths but exaggerating features for effect. Part of this exaggeration probably owes to our collective desire to romanticize the tortured artist – and Poe is as tortured as they come. However, some of the exaggeration of Poe’s faults owe to the fact that he was a harsh critic, and at least one of the authors who felt the sting of his pen found an opportunity to amplify the “drug-addled lunatic” aspect of Poe’s nature in a biography after the great author’s death. That’s not to deny that Poe had an addictive personality. He was both an alcoholic and prone to gambling away whatever funds graced his pockets. This short biography (less than 150pp.) gives one insight into Poe’s life from birth to death in five chapters. The first of these chapters describes Poe’s childhood, which was marred by the death of his mother, abandonment by his father, and being taken in -- but not adopted -- by a foster couple. Granted the foster couple was wealthy, but Poe’s foster-father could be a harsh man and the uncertainty of not being formally adopted seemed to have weighed on Poe’s mind. The middle chapters give special attention to Poe’s life as a writer, noting under what circumstances he was published, starting with a self-published chap book and moving through to becoming one of America’s great men of letters (though he never made enough money to live in comfort.) Poe famously married a cousin who was very young (though of legal age) at the time, and we get some insight into that relationship, which ended not terribly long before his own death. The last chapter gives the details of Poe’s demise.I found this book interesting and educational. Collins neither gets lost in the minutiae nor give’s Poe’s life short shrift, and it feels as though he reveals the true Poe and not the T-shirt version. I would recommend this book for fans of Poe’s work and for those who are interested in the literary history of America.

This is relatively short book that delivers a great deal of information about the life of Edgar Allan Poe. While other biographies go on and on, providing reams of plodding minutia, this presentation gave me all I really cared to know about Poe while informing me about many things I didn’t know about Poe before. And it did that in a manner that kept my attention. Where did his middle name, Allan, come from? What was his marriage to his 13 year old cousin all about? I had vague ideas about his time at West Point, and his having lived in Richmond and Baltimore and New York City. In fact, years ago I happened across his grave in Baltimore, but didn’t understand then what I was really seeing. Poe’s life of incredible creativity and unappreciated genius is an interesting and fascinating story told by Collins in an enjoyable, informative and interesting way.
