I really enjoyed this book. It's rich in story telling about how a Canadian sports enthusiast discovers a mysterious Provence pastime. Péntanque, as you will learn about by reading Uncorked, created a healthy avenue through which Paul immerses himself into a new culture and it's people while working in hi-tech. He makes lasting friendships in the process. Self-deprecating humour will keep you laughing and reading. Paul also shares some of the challenges that came along with being an outsider trying to feel at home in another country, again with a humorous angle to keep it fun for the reader. Magnifique!
Unlike the usual “I bought a house in France†memoir, Paul Shore’s witty and charming book breaks new ground. In Uncorked, Shore explains how he used the Oh-So-French game of pétanque as a way to both understand French society and ultimately be embraced by it.Uncorked describes Shore’s year in the Provençal village of St-Paul-de-Vence, where he becomes intrigued by this ancient game and its mysterious rules and customs. With the clandestine help of a local named Hubert, he slowly begins to learn and master its nuances. Will he be allowed to play on the sacred pétanque pitch? Will he be accepted into this tight-knit community? I found myself rooting for Shore and celebrating his successes along with him.For anyone who would like an inside look at French culture from a unique perspective, Uncorked is not to be missed!
The title of the book led me to believe I was going to be reading a book about wine. I was pleasantly surprised to find a charming book about Paul's initiation into the game of petanque and his discovery of the artist Marc Chagall, who had lived in the village where Paul chose to spend his year in France. Relocated by his Canadian employers, Paul has a fascinating year getting to grips with the French language and culture, and the aforementioned game. A very enjoyable read which I can definitely recommend.
Paul Shore is a Canadian who moves to France for a year because of his work. He attempts to put himself in the life of his village, Saint-Paul de Vence. And he becomes fixated on learning a game. The game is petanque and it is similar to lawn bowling or bocce ball. But, it is French and they are proud of it.Mr Shore writes in a very entertaining manner. Not only does he worm his way into playing petanque with the locals, but he learns about art and food and living in a wonderful place.He makes his year sound like one of the loveliest times anyone could have as a life experience.It is not an easy place to become immersed in the life of French people. In such a small village, at first he is considered to be exactly like all the obnoxious tourists. Slowly he becomes more of a fixture if not one of the locals.His business trip to Israel is a wonderful example of living in another world and learning the way things work.The book is an interesting and fun read. Mr Shore made this reader enjoy his year abroad almost as much as I did.If I were in a position to move to France I think I would go to that village, just to be able to watch the village life pass by.
Reading Paul's excellent book makes me want to book the next flight to Provence, buy a set of petanque balls and find my very own Hubert to teach me to play. Ahh if only it was that simple. Good thing that through Paul's year invested in the community, his keen sense of adventure, his affable nature and his inquisitive ways we can all relive and experience a truly great story of a Canadian in FRANCE!UNCORKED is a fun quick and quirky read. A must for anyone considering a trip to that region. A real celebration of the differences in culture between North America and France.
Paul Shore's account of his year in Provence was a delightful surprise. I followed his curiosity as he studied the closed game of pétanque and managed not only to learn the game and play with the village pros, but was eventually accepted into their inner circle! I chuckled because our competitive family plays bocce ball on a regular basis, with no mercy for the opponents and much trash talk to throw them off guard. I highly recommend this endearing read.
At first I wasn't too sure about this book, but I really did enjoy it. The differences between cultures often cause some awkward moments, but this book presents such situations with realism. I've been there, done that type of thing and the intricacies of situations in the book parallel a lot of similar that I've experienced in years past. It's a fun read, it's an interesting read, and lessons for all. Definitely have recommended this to friends.
