This is the first book that I read by Mrs. Greene. I now know it was her first book to write as well. BRAVO! Not only did I read it, I recommended it to my mom. And I have encouraged my teenager to read it. There is nothing in it that each of them would embarrass either of them.The story is about a young lady from the lower middle class trying to make it on her own who meets a man at a party where she is working on the catering staff. An innocent exchange; nothing that couldn't happen at any well to do party. Then there comes the hook.The man she meets seeks her out, presents her with a proposition -- NOT WHAT YOU'RE THINKING -- and it's intriguing. She ends up accepting and puts the book into motion.What I really liked was the building of the relationship between the characters. The sweetness, the realness, the honesty. There wasn't a sexual aspect to it at all. There was companionship. There was conflict from outside influences that didn't approve and didn't understand the relationship. Again, a lot of times a reality for a lot of us, when our relationships are judged from outsiders looking in.The male character is very driven by his faith in God. And while this book is not a "christian" book, it has that aspect in it. His faith plays a huge role in the decisions that he makes, in the way he handles himself, and in how the female main character views him. As a Christian woman myself, it was enjoyable to see the effortlessness at which the author made that seem normal.Now, as I mentioned there are no sex scenes, and I intend for my young, teenager to read this. However, sex does occur between the characters. It is not graphic in anyway and does not sensationalize the need for sex or make it ok for a teenager. There are consequences that occur because of the sex. Again, very appropriate and excellently handled.When I write a review, I try very hard to convey what I loved about the story without giving away the plot or the storyline too much if at all. I want you to know what I found appealing without you reading the book thinking, "when is (fill in the blank) going to happen?". That's not fair to you as a reader or to the author who spent so much time weaving the story. This is one of those books where I wish I could tell you EVERYTHING because I know that if you knew the twists in the plot, you would be so intrigued, you couldn't help but go out and read it for yourself.I said earlier, this was the first book of Grace Greene's that I had read. I plan on reading more! Thank you, Mrs. Greene, for giving me a lovely story about life, love, death, faith, and human kindness that is clean enough that I can share with my daughter.
What a heartwarming story that will take you to the shorelines of North Carolina. Very written story with a a great cast of characters that intertwine with each other so well. They will make you feel like you are in the small town of Emerald Isle.The story will make you laugh and cry. It is filled with twists and surprises. Wondering what will happen next. I loved every minute of the story!
Loved the different story line as so many books today seem to be copies of each other ! The author has done an excellent job of developing the sights and sounds of the "Outer Banks" backdrop. One could feel the salt air and ocean in all of it's glory from a beautiful house with an exquisite view. I wanted to live there ! The story was an interesting one and made you think about what you would do if this opportunity was bestowed on you. Making Ben so very "perfect" was probably necessary but .... as time was of the essence due to his impending demise .... but .... seriously .... I would have liked to see some imperfection exposed ... just to completely humanize his character. The twists and turns were not expected and were executed at the proper place and time. The saddest part to me was seeing the "perfect" guy lose and the "edgy" guy win. Then again .... it seems that was the most REAL part of the entire book. Don't they always seem to ??? Meanwhile , Juli does so little and is rewarded with so much ... money...a true love.... a baby ... many new friends who don't sit in doubt about her ...the only saving grace is that we are left believing that she well appreciated al the "gifts".This book was very enjoyable on many levels. I appreciate the gift bestowed on me by the author using her creative and complex mind to bless readers with such a thought provoking book. I further appreciate this was all accomplished without bombarding us with hot.. steamy... unnecessary sexual episodes !! Sex was not the primary focus .... what a novel approachI so look forward to reading the next book by Grace Greene.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this story but it grabbed me and pulled me under. I felt compassion for Juli and the tough life she was given but it seemed to make her strong and independent.I was surprised at Ben's character. He was such a sweetheart and saw people beyond what their exterior made others believe. He was so kind, caring and sweet.I was also shocked at Luke's character too. He seemed arrogant and a typical rich guy and seemed to judge Juli like the others at first. I'm sure in talking to Ben helped him see Juli for who she truly was but I found it hard to believe that his best friend had just died and his first thought was wanting Juli for himself. Otherwise, great story!!
For that reason alone, I felt obligated to read it.. The story is a little thin and predictable, but the descriptions of the area and the environment were exactly as I encountered them. Julie, the stories main character is a sympathetic sole needing an anchor. She unexpectedly finds it in a sensitive man that redirects her life along a more positive path.. A must read, for anyone familiar with the Crystal Coast ofNorth Carolina..
First time to read Grace Greene. I enjoyed the story very much. Juli a girl raised in foster homes all her life marries Ben a wealthy man. Shes under contract as a companion. He's dying and doesn't want to live out the remainder of his life alone. A lot of interesting things happen in this journey. Faith, friendship, love, it has it all.
