This map is made from completely waterproof plastic 'paper'. ITMB's waterproof maps are larger than other waterproof maps (such as National Geographic Destination maps and Rough Guide maps), but it's not as huge as the full-size paper maps you can buy anywhere. This map shows the central and Downtown region in good detail, but only shows the rest of the city in a small, low-detail inset map section. There is also a small rapid transit map.On the opposite side is a large regional map that shows Southern Ontario, Northern New York and Pennsylvania. This is a huge bonus, useful for traveling, but I would rather that the opposite side was instead used to show the entire Greater Toronto Area in decent detail.
This is a high quality plastic waterproof map. The map of downtown Toronto is excellent. On the opposite side, the map of Southern Ontario lacks the detail needed for any travel of of the main provincial highways. But it would certainly get you say from Windsor to Niagara Falls, or Toronto to Algonquin Park.
Our daughter went to Antarctica as part of a research group, and because she is 16, my wife and I were quite anxious to follow the trip. This map proved to be excellent and exceedingly useful to us. It had all the features we needed without being cluttered excess detail. We followed her trip and I only had to access the Web once to locate where they were (and that was because they used an out of date name for their location). Our daughter also had a copy and found it useful on the trip. I would not hesitate to recommend this map to anyone.
Very detailed and a great trvel companion during my recent stay in Toronto
The best map I found of Toronto. It is comparable to the CAA/AAA map of Toronto, but larger, so it is much easier to read. This map is 1:12,500 in Toronto, 1:800,000 on back for S Ontario (CAA/AAA is 1:37,000 in Toronto, 1:1,150,000 in S Ontario). The better scale for example spreads the Toronto Islands over 33cm, not 12cm, and they can show the boardwalk, Rectory restaurant, etc. This Toronto ITMB map goes from the islands in Lake Ontario in S, to Wallace Ave & Balmoral Ave in N (High Park and Summerhill, 1-2 km N of Bloor St), and from Windermere Ave in W to Pape Ave in E. However it omits the Port of Toronto and Leslie St. Spit; you can print those from the web if you need to. (CAA/AAA has those, and goes much farther N, to Elgin Mills Rd, Vaughn & Markham. CAA/AAA also goes farther W to Pearson Airport and part of Mississauga, and E to Rouge Park and Pickering.) The regional map on the back of the ITMB map goes from Pennsylvania in the S, to Lake Nipissing, Algonquin Provincial Park, Ottawa, and into Quebec in the N.They have a helpful note calling attention to the pedestrian tunnels downtown, and clearly show them. Another helpful note warns that rental cars pay large fees to use highway 407, since rental cars lack transponders. Hertz charged me $6-12 toll per trip on highway 407, plus $14 admin fee, though they waived the $14 when I pointed out their contract says it'd be proportional to their admin cost. Toll itself is $5 per trip, plus 19-30 cents per kilometer (407etr.com). Each trip costs $4 less with a transponder. Toronto's high toll for cars without transponders is unfriendly to travelers, whether in their own or rented cars. This is the only map I found which shows streetcar routes. This and Laminated Toronto Map by Borch (English Edition) are the only ones which show GO commuter trains. The Borch map is not as clear as ITMB, but covers more area in N and E (still not as much as CAA/AAA), so it may be better if you're spending much time in the area just outside ITMB's boundaries.CAA/AAA map is fine if you're a member, but get this too if you plan much walking downtown, or driving in the wider region. They need to add an index of neighborhoods. The ITMB Toronto map is strewn with names like High Park and Summerhill, but no index. Borch labels fewer neighborhoods, but indexes them.
If you're going to the White Continent or just a fan, this map gives an excellent, detailed picture of Antarctica. All the major landing spots are covered, & it gives an overview of the wildlife & where they're found. This map was handy when my husband & I planned our trip to the Antarctic peninsula, which we chronicle in our DVD "T&T's Real Travels in Antarctica" available on amazon.com.
