In 1994, Prof. Mark Noll published The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind which opened with this arresting sentence: “The scandal of the evangelical mind is that there is not much of an evangelical mind.” For Noll, the word mind pointed to “serious intellectual life,” “the effort to think like a Christian…across the whole spectrum of modern learning.” The book offered a historical explanation for the scandal, outlined its effects on how evangelicals approach politics and science, and suggested that an “evangelical renaissance” might be underway.The State of the Evangelical Mind picks the story up twenty-five years later, assessing the quality of evangelical intellectual life across four sets of institutions: churches, parachurch organizations, colleges and universities, and seminaries. Noll himself kicks off the volume with an essay titled, “Reflections on the Past.” His paradoxical conclusion? “The evangelical mind…seems to be fading fast, even as more and more evangelicals cultivate with more and more integrity the life of the mind.” In other words, while many evangelicals are making contributions to “serious intellectual life,” their contributions are not “specifically evangelical.”Jo Anne Lyon, former superintendent of the Wesleyan Church, argues that evangelical churches need to recover “the [historic] evangelical commitment to works of love, mercy, and justice,” even as they recognize that it is an “imperfect tradition” All movements are guided by a “strong narrative,” she points out, but when they lose that narrative, “it becomes very difficult to resist the seduction of political power that results in moving from prophetic to partisan to nationalism and civil religion.” Additionally, it leads to “seclusion and hopelessness,” on the one hand, and the attempt “to find hope in secularism,” on the other. Lyon’s analysis seems to me to perfectly capture the current state of white evangelicalism.David Mahan and Don Smedley survey the state of the evangelical mind in parachurch organizations. Both work with the Rivendell Institute at Yale University, which is part of the Consortium of Christian Study Centers. Mahan investigates “the impact of secular university-based parachurch organizations on the growth and development of evangelicalism” as well as how these organizations might impact “the future of evangelicalism and evangelical thought.” Smedley critiques aspects of Noll’s thesis in Scandal and suggests that “evangelicals move more of the focus [on forming an evangelical mind] from the public square to the pew.”Drawing on John Henry Newman’s classic work, The Idea of a University, Timothy Larsen outlines the five foundational ideas of a university and shows how Christian schools contribute to them. His conclusion: “Not only students, but the entire academy will be better off throughout the twenty-first century if there continues to be a thriving sector of Christian liberal arts colleges embodying the best ideas offered in John Henry Newman’s classic text.”In her chapter on seminaries, Lauren Winner argues that “the most basic thing seminaries [should] do” is “teach people to speak Christian language as the primary language through which all else is arranged and construed, and serve as a space where people practice seeing with Jesus-adapted eyes.”Whereas Noll offered “Reflections on the Past,” James K. A. Smith forecasts “Prospects for the Future” in his chapter. Like Noll, Smith sees evangelical intellectuals making serious contributions to the life of the mind. “But now the problem: we simply have to recognize and confess how utterly disconnected all of this is from the vast majority of evangelical congregations and the networks that comprise ‘evangelicalism’ in the United States.” Smith goes on: “The chasm between the aspirations and hopes of ‘the evangelical mind’ and the habits and dispositions of the celebrity cult that is evangelicalism is no smaller now than it was in 1994. If anything, it is worse.” The solution? “We need a generation of Christian scholars who articulate a fundamental critique of evangelical assimilation [to American culture] but who nonetheless are invested in reform. You cannot be a prophet on your way out the door.”This book will hold special interest for those who lead evangelical institutions such as churches, parachurch ministries, and graduate and undergraduate schools. Other readers will have to catch as catch can. While all the chapters in The State of the Evangelical Mind have something interesting to say, in my opinion, the essays by Noll and Smith are worth the price of the book.

Mark Noll's Scandal of the Evangelical Mind was an important read for me, even though I came to it over a decade after its publication. His argument rang true then, and as someone who aspired to do intellectual work as a Christian, I was both convicted and challenged. I wanted to be part of a church that was historically orthodox and gladly engaged in critical thought, fearing nothing, passionate for truth, gentle in character, and humble in spirit. Noll's Scandal identified problems I had encountered within evangelicalism and gave me hope that the church of the future could grow in its capacity to love God more fully with heart, soul, strength, and mind.The State of the Evangelical Mind is an update on Noll's Scandal, and the essays collected therein are quite good, helpful, timely, and constructively critical. Has evangelicalism changed? What did Noll get right? What did he get wrong? What has developed as a result of this landmark book? Where does evangelicalism stand, and what is its future?The evangelical movement, most certainly, has changed. So has the seminary, parachurch ministry, and the perception of evangelicals. Noll did not get everything right. Neither has evangelicalism, as of yet, fully answered Noll's call for a distinctively evangelical contribution to the life of the mind. The contributors in this volume help us see where Noll could have been more precise, where he was spot on, and what has changed, highlighting both positive and negative developments. The contributors also look forward, offering a vision for what evangelicalism could be.Some of the critiques made me rethink my understanding of Noll's Scandal, and challenged me to think more carefully about the part I have to play in the future of evangelicalism as a Christian educator. The sharpness in argument, particularly in Jamie Smith's essay, was something I found quite welcome. For iron to become sharp, it must, after all, be met with iron.I was not disappointed, and I'm glad I read this book.

MurrayPublisher: The Gloucester County Times Date: 3/23/09Every day, thousands of motorists speed over what was once the longest steel suspension bridge in the world. Maybe only a handful even consider the work that went into erecting the Ben Franklin Bridge more than 80 years ago. A couple from Camden with strong ties to both the bridge itself and the region have put together a pictorial history of the span from its design phase a century ago to its present-day role as a key to transportation infrastructure between two states. "It was very interesting to go back and see it again as a new thing," author Mary Howard said about researching the latest local edition of Images of America: The Ben Franklin Bridge. "Nowadays, for all of us it's just part of our world and you take it back and forth to work. You almost forget what an amazing thing it was when it was first built." Howard, an editor in the medical publishing industry and a member of the Camden County Historical Society, put the book together along with her husband, Michael, an engineer for the Delaware River Port Authority. The DRPA oversees the maintenance and operation of the bridge. Michael said the book started after he put together a slideshow of pictures to commemorate the Ben's 80th anniversary. He sifted through hundreds of photos in the DRPA archives to come up with 40 pictures for the show. In this book, more than 200 photos, diagrams and copies of newspaper articles from the bridge's early years are included along with a brief historical account. "We could do a book that's twice the size of this," Michael Howard said, noting he and Maureen had to conform to the guidelines set up by the publisher. "It's a shame Ð We had all these pics laid out and it was literally like, ÔOh, can we use this?' It's like spring training in baseball when you have to cut down your roster," he added. There are construction shots and pictures of what buildings gave way in both Camden and Philadelphia to allow the massive bridge superstructures to be built. The four large concrete and granite anchorages on both sides of the river aren't just for show. They were to be used as rapid transit station lobbies for passengers to move from elevated rail lines to other modes of transportation like a trolley line that never came to be a reality. For Maureen, the newspaper accounts touting the virtues of the crossing proved to be most interesting for her. "Until it was built you had to get on a boat if you wanted to go to Philadelphia," she said. "I enjoyed having my eyes open in a sense and appreciating what an amazing thing it is." And it came at a time where manual labor was the order of the day. A time when grit, toughness and the best technology available at the time built grand structures that still dot the nation's skylines today. "When we talk with kids about it, they see how computers and big machines are around," Michael said. It wasn't the way back then.
